I live in a very different climate than you, but I have Pascali and Perfecta. Perfecta has lots of fragrance worth noticing, and both are well worth growing. They are among the tried and tested favorites. Nice shapely hybrid teas that perform well.

Pascali froze out back when we were actually (as opposed to nominally) zone 6. It's a beauty, and as I recall, resistant to botrytis balling/petal blight. Royal Highness also has a particularly elegant flower, but susceptible to botrytis in cool, wet weather. The plant is tall and narrow. I planted two in the same hole to good effect.

Thank you both, I forgot I posted this and just got back to the forum today. Actually, the other day, I noticed there were three grapes on the vine. Not sure why there were only three and not a whole cluster or more? I was so excited. So, it evidently is capable of fruiting. They turned out to be green grapes and they were sweet. Now if I can just do something to help it produce more next year. I did move it from a small arbor where it wasn't getting enough sun, to an area next to a patio that had a structure above it that it could climb. I'm trying to remember how long ago I moved it. I could have been last year or the year before. So all the branches are either two years old or one year old. The branch going up one leg of the structure looks like a trunk. I was thinking that next year, I should allow for that trunk to be just a trunk and not allow any green stems or branches to sprout along it, so that all the growth is on the top of the structure? I will do a search for grape pruning. Thanks...

Windeaux- Thanks. I def don't want to pay for 2 varieties of the same rose if Kaiserin Friedrich and E Veyrath Hermanos are the same. And I do have MFK, and don't like her veggie centers! Don't want another. Masha- Thanks. I would've been super dissapointed to get a pink HT. (shudder!) Lux- I hope to goodness that I remember to feed these babies. I've lost so many bands over the last couple of years because I was scared to over fertilize. Then they are too small to make the winter. I may actually spray the babies to help them grow, too. My rose garden back in 2005 seemed fully mature after 2 years because I was spraying and fertilizing. Nowadays it takes much much longer for my roses to grow. I have the roses you've listed except for Anna Oliver which I've ordered over and over only to be told they are out of stock. Tried again this time though! Harborrose- I'm hoping the angular thing was just the "teenage awkwardness" stage. I've had teas start out that way on their way to huge monsterous beautiful bushes. Are there any of the climbers that have growth thick and sturdy enough to self support? Which of the climbers are super duper flexible and need to be tied up? I'm running out of climbing space but thinking of setting some of them in areas where there is no actual support but where they will be able to "get a leg up" by throwing canes onto mature plants around them (and short growing stubby pine trees behind them). I've done that with a couple of other climbers with great effects but I think the stems have to be really sturdy.

Carrie,I just bought a new SLGB this summer - my old one (bought in '99) was sadly lacking in things this one has - despite the date of publication, I think it is fairly newly out - and all the illustrations/drawings are in color, as well as the entries being much expanded! To quote from the book - General for Michaelia: Magnolia relatives native to China & the Himalyas. When in flower, they might be mistaken for some kind of magnolia - but unlike magnolias, they bear their blossoms among the leaves rather than at branch ends. M. figo has been in gardens for some 200 years, and M. doltsopa has been in cultivation in North America for perhaps half a century. The other species listed here are newcomers about which we have much to learn; they have not had time to grow to maturity in North American gardens. All are attractive, with lush foliage and profuse, fragrant blossoms divided into petal-like segments. Not usually browsed by deer. The cultural requirements seem to be for partial shade in the hottest regions, otherwise full sun, and they need average amounts of water. For M. yunnanesis: Shrub or tree. Coastal and tropical south. Another newcomer. To 15' tall. Blooms in early spring, when white flowers burst from dark, velvety buds. For M.x fogggi: Shrub. Coastal and tropical south. Group of hybrids between M. figo & M. doltsopa. 'Allspice' grows 10-20' tall, 6-15' wide, with glossy green foliage; bears fruity scented, 1.5" light yellow flowers bordered in maroon from spring to early summer. 'Belle Durio', to 6-10' tall & wide, is a spring bloomer bearing 3-4" white flowers with a purple style (reproductive structure) in the center. 'Jack Fogg' grows yo 18' tall, 6-8' wide; spring flowers are white, with each segment bordered in purplish pink. Hope this helps. And I wish I were in a warmer zone; the plants sound marvelous, but it's too cold here for them, except M. figo and maudiae! And I have more than enough things to plant out from pots right now - maybe next fall.....

butterfly4u - again, thank you for the information. I'm thinking about putting the Kanjiro in one of the pockets at the front of my home (beside my front porch). Currently, I have a couple of gardenias and a hydrangea there and they do well. I have a wall fountain that is broken and I think if DH will move that out, the camillia can be planted there. It only gets about 1-2 hours of sun/day there, and the soil is fine. I also think that perhaps I could espalier it against the wall - I love the idea of that. I'm having a problem finding the right place for the 'Professor'. I have a choice of two places. There is a spot at the end of my driveway that is fairly shady (pine trees on west side), but gets some south sun there. I had a couple of hydrangeas there, but they died from my lack of watering them, so I am not certain the sun situation is exactly right. (I would make sure it got watered.) The dirt there is good on top, but probably rocky underneath - it used to be where I composted. The big question is whether the south sun would shine too brightly there. It's also not a place that I could see from an inside window, but would see it every time I drove up. Or - I could put it on the east side, but I would have to move a Lady Banks rose that I have planted there now. (it's not large - just planted last year) I think it would not get afternoon sun there, but am wondering if sun until afternoon is ok? The soil is ok, and the watering system reaches that bed. Unfortunately, you can not see that side of the house from a window, so the blooms in winter may be mostly missed. That is why I think I'd rather have it at the end of the drive. nandina - thanks for the info. I have had a hard time trying to get this clay soil in good condition, but have succeeded in a few places. There is an organic gardening shop close to where I live, so I will go there tomorrow and see if they have that. Any opinions on which place to put the 'Professor' would be appreciated. Or even about the 'Kanjiro'. For various reasons, I will probably plant them in another week. I am making sure they don't dry out. Your expertise is greatly appreciated. Because of the sentiment attached, it would break my heart to lose either of these camillias.

My friend in northern MI has Pascali and loves it! It's wintered well for her too.

I've grown Kordes Perfecta for a number of years - it is quite hardy in my zone as long as it is winter protected.

We grew "Lundy Lane" and I found it to be a very lovely mostly-yellow Pernetiana.
Its' foliage is a very light-medium green, and very attractive.
One caveat: of all the Pernetiana roses I've grown it suffered the most badly from blackspot.
I have an organic rose garden and never sprayed it with anything other than Cornell.

It continued to bloom c. 3 weeks later in Autumn than my other Pernetiana roses, which also endeared it to me.

For comparison, these are healthier Pernetiana roses for our area, near Oakland, California.
I never needed to spray theses with anything:
"Duquesa de Penaranda" the healthiest of all Pernetiana roses in our area. The climbing form is fantastic!!!
"Soliel d'Or"
"President Herbert Hoover" the most fragrant of the Pernetiana roses to my nose.
"Gruss an Coberg"
"Mari Dot" a fabulous Dot rose but very small on her own roots, I'd love it on rootstock.

I have 'CL. RoseMarie' in a sheltered, south facing location. So far, it is slow to take off, but this is the first full year. It was planted last Oct. I have it well mulched, and it gets extra kitchen water, as in, pasta water, left over coffee, etc. I was a little disappointed in the first bloom. but I am sure later ones will be better. Nice disease free foliage which did not BS last year, and nice pink color.

'Royal Highness' lacks vigor. The RH offspring 'Brides Dream' is much better, though it does not have RH's beautiful fragrance.

Do you grow any of these and what can you tell me about them pls?
