Back Wheels on Snapper SB locked up

I noticed my drive mechanism was slipping yesterday while blowing very heavy, wet snow. All of a sudden the rear wheels locked up tight and I had to drag it home. It's a 1991 Snapper I422 2 stage. I've never had a problem with it until now. Thanks!

Though not familiar with your exact machine, the answer probably lies inside the lower cover and will need inspection. bolt out of a jack shaft, broken carrier, spring etc.

OK, thanks Tom. I did remove the inspection cover from underneath and found all sorts of rubber material laying in the bottom along with metal shavings. A chunk of rubber got in the sprocket and cog for the rear drive shaft. I cleaned that out and now it rolls freely. I also found the blower drive belt is loose and slapping when disengaged after I removed the belt cover.

Back to the drive system, the vertical wheel is very loose and wobbles side to side so that much be shot. I get just a little forward motion from the drive system now even after adjusting the cable tighter. Seems I have multiple problems here.

Locate the brake arm at the transaxle . It could be simply rust at the back of the arm or the caiper may need to come apart and be freed up and lubed.

I have the washer(s) between the wheel and the axle. The left side of the axle (user facing the mower in mowing position) has a square end that fits into a slot at the end of the axle shaft. The axle will not turn at all with no wheels on the saft because the axle shaft is locked via the square on that end of the shaft. IF you force the axle out of that square slot, if turns just fine. The whole thing is that one side of the axle does not have the square slot - the other side does.

They work well if a lot of turns are required or there are sweeping curves around beds. One caster should have a lock controlled from the handle so the operator can maintain a straight line more easily. This is important on slopes. They do limit trimming in tight spots.

I assume a snowthrower? with regular drive wheels and not tracks? Model #s/ type of equipment would be great. Regarding the recoil, is it actually engaging and pulling the engine over? If it is pulling the engine over, and it truly has no compression, it would possibly be a stuck valve- or worse a broken rod. Internal anyways.If not, maybe it is frozen and can't engage. Has the machine been sitting out in the snow or possibly re- frozen? It is a snowthrower..sorry....it is gear driven not chain. the model number is 31AS6BCE752...It has been left out after snow blowing. a friend was here and we got it started....the wheels were turning and it was working fine then we shut it off and restarted it and the wheels are not moving and it will engage the blower but will not move...the rubber drive wheel is not up against the drive disk... it seems to be something mechanical.we used wd40 and made sure everything is freed up..or it wouldn't have worked for a few minutes.

It's not so bad once you have the cover off. It sounds as though that the friction disc came apart and created all kinds of issues. A significant amount of wobble isn't good. While you are there you want to know that the driven plate also seems secure. Look for lateral movement in bearing and such.
