Shailer's Provence. (I put this on your other thread, too, and am adding it here in case someone comes across this.) Chinas and Hybrid Chinas are different roses. (though the ARS won't tell you this.) Think of a Hybrid China as the first crosses made in the late 18th and early 19th century between the new-and-amazing everblooming China roses and the once blooming, fragrant, old European roses. Since the reblooming gene in the Chinas is recessive, the original hybrids are once blooming like their European parent. Only with successive crosses between the hybrids did the breeders achieve roses that expressed the recessive gene. Shailer's Provence is considered the first Hybrid China rose to enter commerce, in the late 1790s. (Gregg Lowery has a fantastic presentation on Hybrid Chinas.)

Looks like Shailer's to me! Don't let the presence or absence of suckers sway your ID. I have two plants of this rose ... one suckers like crazy and the other one (the older of the two) hasn't suckered at all. My oldest plant came from a cutting I took at an abandoned (now demolished) house in Spotsylvania. The mother plant was suckering, but I wasn't risking the poison ivy to get a sucker ... so I took as many cuttings as I could do safely. My second plant is a sucker from a cemetery in eastern Virginia. I now have third small plant, still in a pot, rooted from a cutting on a massive thicket of a suckering rose that I found in Fredericksburg. It will be interesting to see if this plant suckers once it's put into the garden. In my garden, Shailer's Provence is one of my first OGRs to flower, and the last to finish. Its canes are relatively smooth, and the leaves are lovely matte green. It grows with an arching habit, that I encourage, because I get WAY more flowers by letting the canes arch. I love this rose and it is one that I will never be without.

I haven't tried Janet yet. I may do that on Monday, but I really hate to bother her with this. After all, they do give away these roses on the basis of them not being identified right? If everyone pestered them later as to what each rose was, that might not be so fun for them. It does look like Alister Stella Gray, flower-wise. The one thing on that one that gives me pause is the lack of thorns on mine. My whole plant only has one. Can anyone who grows ASG comment on the thorniness of that rose -- the one comment on that subject at HMF says ASG is quite thorny. Also, RVR does not show this rose on their own website or on HMF as one that CAN be obtained from them. Anyone ever gotten an ASG from RVR that can confirm that they even have that plant? We would need more photos of it. Pictures of buds, half open blooms, leaves and the whole plant. It does seem to be a hybrid tea type rose but there are a lot of hot pink ones.
