Diane and ingrid, Austin touts Evelyn as a 6' climber, and my memory is that several Californians on this forum have claimed 20' long Evelyns. Ingrid, I always check out the photos on HMF, but I never trust that as much as a person-to-person opinion here. Is there an apricotish version of SdlM, or Duchesse de Brabant, or the Tantau rose you just linked on the Austin thread? Also, seeds of the somniferous poppies can be purchased at One Stop Poppy Shoppe and several other smaller seed companies. Burpee has a double peony type called Venus. These poppies are supposed to be out of their element in our climate, but I planted last autumn to take advantage of the cold, and so far all but the darkest color are holding their own and stopping visitors in their tracks. -jannike

Looks like Shailer's to me! Don't let the presence or absence of suckers sway your ID. I have two plants of this rose ... one suckers like crazy and the other one (the older of the two) hasn't suckered at all. My oldest plant came from a cutting I took at an abandoned (now demolished) house in Spotsylvania. The mother plant was suckering, but I wasn't risking the poison ivy to get a sucker ... so I took as many cuttings as I could do safely. My second plant is a sucker from a cemetery in eastern Virginia. I now have third small plant, still in a pot, rooted from a cutting on a massive thicket of a suckering rose that I found in Fredericksburg. It will be interesting to see if this plant suckers once it's put into the garden. In my garden, Shailer's Provence is one of my first OGRs to flower, and the last to finish. Its canes are relatively smooth, and the leaves are lovely matte green. It grows with an arching habit, that I encourage, because I get WAY more flowers by letting the canes arch. I love this rose and it is one that I will never be without.

I wish I could help you but a lot of these little gift minis are very hard to ID because the growers sometimes interchange varieties of the same color with a specific name. The two biggest growers of these minis are Poulsen and Kordes. Poulsen has three series that I know of called Parade, Palace and Hit roses but there could be more. Kordes are mostly under the name Kordana. They both have web sites you can go to and see if you can find your rose but like I said it isn't easy. In any case it's a lovely rose!

Mbluetyphoon, I'm so very sorry if I offended you. I had a sinking feeling as soon as I sent off the post that my comment was very much out of line. I hope you can overlook it. Diane-nj, I think I probably would like your garden. When you have very many roses with different colors close together the look becomes that of a rich tapestry, which I find very appealing. When I tried to picture in my mind just five roses of vastly different colors from the warm and cool sides of the color spectrum it was difficult for me. But it wasn't my place to comment on that, no matter how good my intentions. Ingrid
