I am supremely unqualified to make any judgements here, but I'm wondering if anyone else thinks she might be a Hybrid Musk for starters?

Constant bloom sounds like it could be a Polyantha, perhaps "Perle d'Or"?

Perle d'Or looked and sounded good, but look at this picture of a bud that Jeffcat uploaded at HMF and compare it to the bud in Kathy's sequence of pictures. The one at HMF has sepals with jagged edges (sorry about my poor nomenclature)..

I don't think it's Perle d'Or, but it might be a Polyantha of some sort. Or it might be a Tea. Or a Noisette. Or a China -- actually, I'm seeing things that are characteristic of all four types here.

But anyway, the pics on HMF of Perle d'Or are much pinker than this rose, which really doesn't have any pink to it -- it's more a cream colored center.
And my mild, foggy climate usually brings out more color in roses than most places, as they have time to open here in the fog before the sun hits them and they fade. So this rose would probably be a bit whiter in anyone else's climate.

I thought Polyantha, too. Cecile Brunner type. But the apricot color ... don't know.

Thanks for the heads-up on RVR's penchant for sending "mystery " roses. Sure don't want any of those . . .

No, no, no, Jaxondel, the "mystery roses" that RVR sends are not in lieu of anything you have ordered. They are totally extra. If you order a certain number of roses -- maybe 3? -- they let you chose a bonus rose from a list AND send you a "mystery rose" too.

This is not a mark against them in any way shape or form.

Oh -- don't get the wrong idea Jaxondel. The mystery rose was not a mislabeled "something" that I ordered. It was purely an extra rose that they send for free as a bonus (only if you want it) once you have ordered four or more roses from them. And I wanted it. The first one I got was Distant Drums. This is the next one.

The "mystery" roses are just roses that they propagated and which lost their labels somewhere along the way. So, you probably "do" want those. It's just fun to try to figure out what you've got, and if you don't like them, you take them to the next rose society meeting and find someone else happy to adopt them (and there is always someone who things "free" is the right price).

Have you tried asking Janet at RVR? She might know right away from a picture or two and a description based on her knowledge of what roses they stock and what roses might have been mislabled.

ohh maybe that's what's his name...I had it and it died. Soil was contaminated in that spot, neighbor used to empty his used motor oil there unbeknownst to me. i miss it, it was a great rose. A man's name...francois...no...english name...it's alister stella grey, maybe?

The sepals look better for it being Alister Stella Gray. (Those are the sepals, right? -- the green bits that make the transition between the rose petals and the stem?)

I haven't tried Janet yet. I may do that on Monday, but I really hate to bother her with this. After all, they do give away these roses on the basis of them not being identified right? If everyone pestered them later as to what each rose was, that might not be so fun for them.

It does look like Alister Stella Gray, flower-wise. The one thing on that one that gives me pause is the lack of thorns on mine. My whole plant only has one. Can anyone who grows ASG comment on the thorniness of that rose -- the one comment on that subject at HMF says ASG is quite thorny. Also, RVR does not show this rose on their own website or on HMF as one that CAN be obtained from them. Anyone ever gotten an ASG from RVR that can confirm that they even have that plant?

I just went outside and looked at mine, and yes she has good sized prickles. They are spaced at about an inch apart, red, downward facing, and rather soft. The rose doesn't grab you and tear at you, but....it does have prickles....

Our Alistair Stella Gray" has many large prickles, and it is mostly a yellow blooming rose.
I looked at the photos on hmf of perle d'Or and they are pink, which is rare where I live in California, where Perle d'Or at sacramento cemetery, and in my own garden and my neighbors too, Perle d' Or" blooms peach most of the year.
The photo on the vintagegardens.com website, is the only photo that truly shows its peachy hues that I could find.

Those blooms have faded to completely white today in the first day of sun we have had around here. So I think the color should generally be white, and the color in my orig photos were just due to our overcast weather.

Could it be White Cecile Brunner, then?

Bellegallica -- that's a very good possibility. RVR says on their web site that they have White Cecile Brunner (although it is not listed for sale, yet).

Does anyone grow White Cecile Brunner? What's the story on thorns for that rose -- minimal? And does it bloom quite continuously through the season?

Yes ma'am, I have it here. As with traditional Cecile Brunner, the more bush-like version has a few prickles but not a ton of them. As they mutate more toward climbing sports, the prickle count and severity increase. Once it settled in, it began flowering fairly continuously. If RVR got it from Ashdown, it is from this plant. It will throw candelabra like flowering stems like Spray Cecile Brunner. I have a few photos of it on HMF. I'm also using it for breeding with some success in getting hip set. Kim

My ASG had like 1 prickle (if that) on the whole plant. Is there more than one ASG? It was from Vintage.

I'm going to consider this mystery solved then. White Cecile Brunner it is, then, as far as I'm concerned. And since Ashdown sold their entire inventory to RVR when they closed, that's no doubt where it came from, also. Thanks, everyone!
