It's full of worms, right? I assume they're all wriggling about and acting properly wormy, right? I read somewhere that chlorine bleach breaks down into salts, not sure I'm remembering correctly but I say if the worms are fine it's probably usable. To be sure, leave it be for a week or so, turn it again and see if the worms are still acting properly wormy.

I was impatient and did not wait for a response I thought if this stuff is full of worms it has to be ok for veggies. I dug 4 wheelbarrows and had my 13 yr old dig the 5th before we hit hard roots. I feel blessed. Thank you for your response.

I agree if the worms are healthy it's OK. Bleach would be used up pretty quickly reacting with all that organic matter, and assuming it does break down to NaCl, it's not that much salt considering bleach is only 5% by weight to begin with.

I'm not sure why anyone would recommend putting bleach on a stump, though. You want the fungi and bacteria and grubs and beetles in the soil to break down the stump, and bleach is not going to make any of them work faster. Quite the contrary.

Last stump I had, I drilled 3/4" holes into half of it and filled them with fertilizer. That half of the stump broke down twice as fast as the other half.

If your stump was stinky, it could be the type of tree. Was this an oak tree or what?

Hubby said the tree was a silver maple.

Any suggestion Tox on how to breakdown the new stump without a lot of smell it is right by my bedroom window.

I know all trees have something good, but aren't you glad to be rid of a silver maple - ugh! :)

If it helps, putting a large thick, or multilayer, garbage bag over the stump, tying it around the bottom will help it rot down quicker. I'm killing two bushes in the front yard like that now. I've got a few stumps covered to kill them off too, but they need to be wrapped better because shoots are coming out the side.

It seems to be working on everything else, just not where they weren't covered quickly.

Very happy to be rid of that tree Mustard..I felt bad for the tree but now i have a lot more sun for veggies! A lot less of a mess in the fall I am sure.
