Knowing Older 4-Cycle Trimmers from a glance

Knowing Older 4-Cycle Trimmers from a glance without the owner's manual is not that easy. I helped a fellow on his trimmer that he wanted to trash for a new trimmer. He mentioned it starts w/o problems but soon dies and that it leak fuel. I suggested that we check for the leak that could be allowing it to suck air vs fuel. Both lines entering the tank had no seal. We solved that with better sealing lines, which led to the question of what oil mix ratio to use.

He said, "I add this 8 oz bottle to a gallon", I knew the 10 year old trimmer was to young for 16:1. I said it should be on the cap, which showed a fuel pump vs, a ratio. Plus, I am remembering I just saw the recessed filler area on a 4-Cycle Troy Bilt vs this Homelite. The Troy Bilt did have a plug on the recessed plate and instructions to fill showing it laying level until the oil starts to run out vs the Homelite having no plug.

At this point, I told him to call the 800 # tomorrow or search the model # for info (yesterday). Since he wanted to drop it on me at 8 PM. Plus, pull the recess plate that d/n have a plug and check it for oil (since he had used it 10 years). If you have a pic or link of the old style recessed plate with or w/o the oil plug please share. I c/n find either during my search. It will be interesting to know from his 800 # call or model search to know if it is 2 or 4-Cycle. I feel we were missing some info on the trimmer (late and tired) but this shows the need of documentation (a manual or Etc.).

Hmm, 4-cycle??? 4 stroke vs. two stroke Vs two cycle??? anyway I figure you miss typed 4 (mixing gas in second para. and should of been 2 or cycle should of been stroke.???? either way I give my 2 cents on identifing 2 cycles from 4 cycles??? Which you probably know already and if I read the second and thrid para. correctly has to do with mixing ratio's for 2 cycles/strokes engine?

I usually look for oil filled crank case. if it has crankcase and fill/drain plug most likely it's four stroke. Most all 4 stokes trimmer style engines that I have seen are overhead valve designs also which will also have cover on the head to adjust the valves.

I had always thought the terminology was the same. Most of all, I am with you on both your identities:

1. "fill/drain plug most likely it's four stroke".

2. "overhead valve designs also which will also have cover on the head to adjust the valves."

The lack of a ratio mix posted and the recessed plate where I have seen a combo drain/filler plugs and some dip sticks leads to possibly a transition "pre four cycle". Again the ownerÃ¯Â¿Â½s follow-up info should be interesting.

There are so many trashed 2 cycle trimmers it is sickening. I have always said the average person d/n have the patience for the 2 cycles. Sick vs bad Chainsaws are trashed but not as bad as the trimmers.

You should be okay. The Kohler website recommends 10W30 as an alternative to 30 weight, and is good for temperatures from 0 degrees to over 100. Is this a new machine, or did you buy a used one? If new, it is usually recommended to change the oil at the 5 hour mark. Be sure to do this. If you want to use regular 10W30, be sure to monitor the oil level closely, as some engines are said to use more of this oil than straight 30. If you use a synthetic multigrade, the consumption should be more in line with a straight 30 weight.

I am on the Stihl Bandwagon because they went way out of their way to take care of me when they could have turned their back. I had a friend by my saw in the States and ship it to me in Germany. Even though they are made here, they cost almost twice as much as you folks pay. After about 30 minutes of use, the connecting rod came loose. Took it to my local dealer and with a bottle of Jack Daniels for the mechanic and got the saw back in 3 days. I just bought a trimmer from them because they checked the suggested price on the Stihl USA site and discounted me half the difference then loaded me up with goodies that more than covered the other half. I'm always in a hurry so got the FS130 with the 4-mix engine and harness/handlebars. So comfortable to use that if you had a third hand, you could drink a beer while mowing. They told me that the straight shafts are less maintenance than curved and of the straight shafts, the solid shaft is best (at least FS90). I wrote to the Stihl website awhile back and desribed my situation (about 8 miles of fence, some ditches and a couple of right of ways) and a guy suggested that if I had the FS90 or FS110 (depending on how heavy the growth) that I wouldn't have to do more than routine maintenance (spark plug and filter) for a long time if ever. Toro gas trimmer - any comments?

I have one of the Toro attachment capable powerheads like are sold at Home Depot. The unit runs well, and I like it. I bought mine as a rebadged "Ryobi Commercial" from Cummins tools (as part of a package with edger and pole pruner attachments). The Toro trimmers are made by what used to be Homelite consumer products (now OWT). They have a full-crank engine and rotary valve carb. I think it would work fine for you. I can't really comment on the tiller attachment. I have never used one. I have used the pole pruner and edger attachment, though and been pleased with those. Good luck on your decision. I put a link to the unit that I have below. I bought it in person when the Cummins travelling tool sale was in town. The first one I bought would not run, but the second unit I got as an exchange looked almost new and runs great. The second unit still had a piece of a Home depot return sticker attached to the powerhead. I don't know the agreement that Home Depot and Toro have, but it appears that they may sell all the Toro branded returns as refurbished "Ryobi Commercial". First trial. Wouldn't start, confusion about the choke, when done read the manual again, says to start with choke closed on a cold start, open on a warm start. Forgot to turn the switch to on duh. Whatever. I had turned the blades to till and set out to enlarge and reshape a small patch I had done with a tractor. I did have to break up some sod on the edges. But no matter where I was in there, it likes to bounce, does a number on your arms, hope I get used to that, I did put on hiking boots and took my watch off. One hand is still shaking an hour later. It is easy to miss spots, but overall I am pleased, got the manual out, read it again, and now all I don't quite understand is messing with the throttle, air filter, will get into that later. Think I understand how to do the oil now. It is a pain to clean it. I didn't want to hose it or soak the tines in a bucket, so took them off, pulled off all the stuck grass and dirt, washed down with a scrubbie and old cloth; it's in the back hall air drying. I don't think that detangle tool would do much for me, easier to just take the tines off, time will tell. I'm hoping it will be a little easier in cultivate mode in an area that is dug and planted. Next I will try the edger to neaten what I did today. I don't think I would try to break up very much sod ever again, and I don't think it would be safe to use on the terrace the way it bounces. But I can see what it will do from the sidewalk and find a way to get the rest done. The bottom line is that I could not have hand dug and gotten the soil so fine, would have taken a lot more time and energy to do that, never could have broken up the soil that well. It does run quietly, is a real little work horse. Thank you for giving me the courage and info. A lot of that is in one of the manuals. The arbor is dis-assembled and stored in the garage, had to move on without it for now.

I finally received a follow-up today: The 800 # verified the trimmer was a 2-cycle and 50:1 mix was verified on-line. No oil check-drain-fill plug basically dictated 2-cycle and 50:1 mix sounds correct. The oil mix ratio not on the trimmer made it confusing. The gas cap did show a gas pump symbol. This week I saw a gas cap that showed the pump symbol and + which dictated 2-cycle to me. I'll follow up on missing the plus on the other cap.

The link below will show a youtube of changing the oil in a 4-cycle trimmer that appeared as this one w/o the plug in the plate. I'll try to attach this 4-cycle as an attachment also. The trimmer was reported as running better but not the best. Since we d/n examine the carb internally and mainly the fuel screen after 10 plus years it could easily need cleaning or etc. IÃ¯Â¿Â½ll suggest: 1. Checking the spark arrest if it has the fine screen, mainly due to the 16:1 mix he was running. 2. 1 oz of carb cleaner in a fresh tank of fuel not to mention the carb has not been tuned. The fun turns into work when too many friends show-up w/o during my chores and w/n send follow-up info or pics. Too Much Of Their Time!! LOL
