Oil for 4 cycle mowers
Comments (5)The oil is specified in the owner's manual, and typically will be 10W30 or SAE30HD. I believe in using only oils that are certified for 'air-cooled service'. Generally, you would use the lighter of the two depending on the oil temperature at start-up. Some manuals allow 30 weight down to 32F. Since very few mowers are started at that ambient temperature or lower, the 30W would be good for those. Honda, for example, typically calls for 10W30 at 50F or below, and allows 30 for temps above that. Again, the key is the oil temp at start-up, which may differ from the ambient temp depending on how the mower is stored. If it's kept in an attached garage, the oil temp may be 50F or higher. If it is stored in an unheated outside building, the oil temp would be assumed to equal the ambient temp after a few hours of not running. I have two mowers - a Tecumseh engine and a Honda engine. I use 10W30 in the Honda and 30W in the Tecumseh since that's one that allows 30W down to 32F - I can't think of a time I have needed to start a mower at 32F or lower. I might be behind the times on this as newer mowers may well spec 5W30 or even 5W20. All you have to do is to go by the manufacturer's recommendation for the climate you're in. As far as which brand to use, you can't go wrong by using the manufacturer's branded products, like Briggs & Stratton or Honda oil in the appropriate weight. That is not to say there aren't better-quality oils out there, like Amsoil '4-Cycle' which is 'air-cooled' rated, or Opti-4 in 10W30 and 30W....See MoreGenerally 4 Cycle 5-6 HP vertically shaft Briggs holds more oil t
Comments (3)I agree with you, which the chart (“opened with the quick link”) at the bottom of the first long post basically list. Now that I remember, I found a review that stated “the new mower comes assembled and you just add the quart of oil that comes with the mower” which I doubt was a qt. My neighbor new mid grade mower came with a 15 oz bottle of oil. He and his Yardman un-boxed and added some of the oil vs verifying. It smoked so bad I knew something was wrong and ask them to stop and no oil was showing on the stick. I called Home Depot and was told to add the complete 15 oz bottle that came with the mower. We did and the stick checked full. I felt the excessive smoke that finally ended was from the bad positions they had the mower in while adding etc with some oil in it. Directions are not always clear “To Us”! Not to mention being in a hurry w/o looking at any instructions. The Donor Mowers have dried up in this area the last 2-3 yrs. You have to ask for what had been on the curb (after seeing them sit 2-3 yrs outside behind a storage area). The scrap dealers are in larger numbers ahead of the week of monthly City Bulk Pick-up. I still believe maintained residential used mowers vs commercial used mowers are not used an expected lifetime vs a lack of lack of care....See More2 cycle or 4 cycle Leaf Blower.....which is better?
Comments (1)I like 4 cycle engines better than 2 cycle. With a 4 cycle engine you do not need to mix the oil and gas, and worry about getting the wrong ratio. Unlike a 2 cycle engine, with 4 cycles you are not putting 2% residuals into the carburetor. (50 to 1 gas oil mixture.) to evaporate and clog the jets and other small passage ways. Performance wise I do not think there is any difference. The net maintenance is the same. With 4 cycles you check the oil before use, with 2 cycles you mix the oil. With 2 cycles, you will have to spend more time to ensure the carburetor is clean and residuals do not build up. Other considerations a 4 cycle will weight a few onces more, and will not run upside down, so you have to be careful when you are cleaning the cobwebs from the ceiling of the porch....See Morelink or info how a 4 Cycle Troy Bilt Power Head’s oil and piston work
Comments (1)I challenged myself to find or understand how the small Troy Bilt 4 Cycle Power Heads (engines) runs with moving parts sharing the same case with oil. I can understand it Running in a fixed upright position ONLY. I can not understand it running in an upward position to trim a tree. HELP!! Please share a “Short Summery” if you understand how this is working. The Monster ran good to finish trimming his tree after All The Fuss and Mess it made from him over filling with oil. He felt it was damaged due to the sounds but it seems OK and all the excess smoke/oil has burned off. Thanks!...See Morecanguy
