Some causes are these: Leaking float in carb. Take off fuel bowl, and float the float in some gasoline, in a coffee can. If it sinks, thats usually the problem. The needle and seat may be not making a good seal, so gas flows into carb, and overfills the bowl, thereby allowing excess fuel to run out! NOTE: If allowed to do that, excess fuel can and will leak into the engine crank-case, in turn diluting the oil in the engine, and eventually causing a very large "BANG", as you run the engine! And, run you won't, after that loud noise. You can buy an overhaul kit at a lawn mower repair place, or from the internet sites. The needle is not as important as the small rubber seat it sits in. To replace it, make a small hook tool out of thin stiff wire, and pull it out. To install the new seat, push it down into the hole, using a flat ended rod, small enough to fit in the hole. There is a ring depression in one side of the seat. This ring must be down in the hole/tube at the bottom. This work is best done with the carb off the machine. Just remember how it came apart! It's a craftsman 5 hp, I should have said that from the start. Turns out my dad was saving 10 year old gas from an old car he was fixing up and didn't label the can -.- Now I know why the lawnmower isn't working either. Tomorrow morning I will drain the tanks and use carb cleaner, if that doesn't work, i'll just make my dad pay for the damage, lol. Oh, and you can be sure that I'll be making that old gas dissapear.

jkimbllin, Did you get the “Monster” started? If you have Fire, Fuel and Compression it should start. If not, there are quick steps to check each. Such as: * Pull and ground the plug to see if it fires in the “Run Position”. * Use a compression gauge to see if the engine builds good compression or 100 psi or more. * Add ¼ tsp of fresh fuel in the cylinder and add the plug to see if the engine fires or run a second. * If you get good results with all of these the engine should run. Looking back at your notes . * Did you checked the compression and valve clearance's for good compression? * Did you pull the plug and primed the engine with fresh fuel to see if it would fire?*What is the history of this engine stopping and does it tries to start * Did you pull up any youtubs or other technical info of your engine not running? *More history or specific observations if it is not running.
