How many (and which) roses for this arbor?

Hi! I'm wondering how many roses I can put on this arbor. It's total length is about 64ft, 8 posts total, and about 9ft high. The arbor is cemented in and should be sturdy enough to handle anything. So far, I've chosen Crepuscule, Albertine and Alberic Barbier. I'd love to put one rose per post, but will that many fit do you think? Suggestions for others (no more white, though) would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jaune Desprez will reach the top and provide good shade. It's an early bloomer but little repeat. Put it at the corner. It's very healthy.

You can try Renae or Annie Laurie McDowell for repeat bloom and scent if your summers are hot. Reve d'Or is a good performer, Lamarque, too. Lamarque is very large, so situate is next to something smaller. It has very strong scent.

Plant at least two and see how it goes. There are some Group III's that just get huge so you want to make sure you have enough room, especially if the arbour is in sun. I do have three together on an arbout but it is mostly in shade and only gets a bit of early morning sun and a bit of late afternoon sun. For combinations, I have Jackmanii and Hagly Hybrid (aka Pink Chiffon) together and I love the combination. I also have Comtesse de Bouchard (a lovely pink) with Royal Velvet but the Comtesse has a longer blooming period so it depends on the look you want. All flowering at once or flowering a few weeks ahead or behind each other. That way you can get maximum punch and prolong the flowering season. Anyway good luck for whatever you choose. I am sure it will be lovely. I love Venosa and Julia Correvon and I think those two together would be stunning!

Which to put on my arbor, Queens Wreath or Skyvine, and why?

I live in SWFlorida and I have been growing both queens wreath and sky vine for five years and love them both. Earlier comments regarding the need for constant pruning of the sky vine are correct but if you have the time the resulting blooms are worth it. One plant covered an eight foot section 4 feet high of chainlink fence and provide a wonderful color display when in bloom and a nice green wall when not. I built a 4 foot ladder trellis for my queens wreath and planted on plant at each end. Within two years the woody vine climbed to the four foot top a spread out across the eight foot long ladder. It now blooms about every three to four months and it is the one plant that I have that everyone who sees it in bloom raves about. Two great plants either is great but the wreathed is a definate show stopper.

Cynthia, I believe the mildew comments were made by folks who grow/grew EBLG in year-round mildew prone areas like the West Coast where just about all roses get mildew there. Mildew is rarely encountered here in my climate. Since EBLG has never shown any mildew here, it may be due to the climate here or EBLG's innate mildew resistance. Mildew here needs dry conditions (no rain), and hot days accompanied by cool nights. This occurs on rare occasions in the fall, and even then mildew usually does not show up, go figure. When the favorable mildew conditions in the fall occur I keep an eye out for it, but it just doesn't materialize. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had mildew in over 40 yrs., and then it was very light and easily treated. Now, black spot is a bird of a different color. It is epidemic here. Few roses are BS proof/resistant here, even the Knockouts get BS here. The only roses that are BS proof here are silk or plastic roses. EBLG is just about BS free here, certainly equal/superior to the Knockouts' BS resistance. A rosarian here reports he wets down his roses' foliage overhead daily on the rare occasions when mildew pops up in the fall. Knocks mildew dead in its tracks, with no chemicals used other than H2O. I have never tried this method. One last word on EBLG...I feed all my roses heavily, no skimping...not over fertilized, but kept optimal. Watering is never skimped on either. I want maximum flower production. I want to see flowers, and plenty of them. That's why I grow roses! I don't grow them to see how well they can survive with minimal nutrition and hydration. EBLG grew and flowered fantastically for me under my system. I do not know how it will do under a different system.

Re the star jasmine: too much sun maybe? I'm in the Pac NW but summers, even here, with relentless sun, are not kind to star jasmines. There is a lot more humidity on the east coast in the south, and things do well there because they generally have plenty of rain and humidity in summer. Jasmines also like shelter. Windy situations are not the happiest for them. You did well to mulch them. After this growing season they should be well established. One thing about the brown leaves: sometimes leaves do this on evergreen things just as the plant is making a branch there. Look for signs of new branches and more leaves - that is a natural occurance then, and nothing to worry about. how wide is your bed by your fence? you mentioned planting catmint (Nepeta). That plant sprawls when in bloom, and can get very wide - so be sure you don't buy the giant nepeta, which sprawls 4-5 feet. You do have to cut back nepeta when it's done flowering each time. What other flowers are you considering and what is your color range that you like? i think you mentioned white, blue, and purple. What other flowering perennials have you considered? you said you wanted low maintenance so ideally, that would be something you don't have to deadhead constantly. . There are some amazing salvias that would do well in your climate. Salvia patens has pure royal blue flowers; ' cambridge blue' is sky blue, rare colors in flowers - not sure what zones they need but worth checking out. Hummingbirds love salvias. Salvia guaranitica "black and blue" is stunning! Or you could plant asclepias and attract butterflies. i adore lantana, which here is an annual but in the Caribbean grew as a woody shrub and bloomed constantly - i guess they are considered invasive down south so it may not be the best choice for your area. That is one gorgeous arbor. Isn't it a pergola? Whatever it is, it looks solid as a rock, the aesthetics of it look like something you would see on some wealthy estate that has been turned into public gardens, and looks costly. I would like to see a photo when you get some roses going on it.

A lot of the ones Robert carefully selected with help from forum members for his project might do well with yours.

Most places say zeffie is zone 6, so it probably wouldn't work for me, but I think it is a good performer and work well for you.

That's really awesome. I am assuming that you will do some pruning to keep them tidy, and I am sure you will; therefore, you sould be able to do one per column. Alberic and Albertine will grow rampantly and reach the top quickly. Crepuscule will spread her bottom before she climbs (or maybe not, but mine did) as does Jaune Desprez. I would just have to have a stinking Jaune Desprez on this pergola. LaMarque is quickly becoming one of my favorite climbers (leapers) and probably more favored than most at this point. I might add Clair Matin just to give more repeat and some color.

Celine and Reve d'Or would also be beautiful. You have several great, great choices.

I'm almost ( but not quite, cause I'm going to Regans today!) to the point that I'll have to wait for fall planting because it gets very hot here. I notice that a lot of nurseries are sold out of the good stuff. Do they have new stock for the fall or is it just leftovers from the spring? Do they take reservations for the fall?

There was at one time an arbor similar to that in the Baldwin rose garden at the LACO Arboretum. One of the loveliest things on it was Buff Beauty. The fragrance would be AWESOME!

Hello gilroythorns, I'm in zone 9 in SJ. This is a pergola, we're also building one on our back patio area. We have 6 posts and are putting one rose on each post. We're going to be using Cl. New Dawn, Cl. Shot Silk and Golden Showers. There is a great book by Tony Lord called "Designing with Roses" that list specific roses for pergolas. Albertine sounds great for this... What is supporting this, is it only two sides not four??

Careytearose - Aren't you loving this weather?!!!! Thanks for the heads up about Tony Lord's book. I'll definitely add it to my collection. One of my favorites is Landscape with Roses by Jeff Cox.
Our structure is L shaped with 8 posts cemented in with metal brackets. Super strong.
I just put in an order for 3 more, so this is the list so far:

Cl American Beauty - I saw her in Sacramento last weekend and WOW!!!

I wish my backyard was as big as yours...that clear blue sky matched the white arbor perfectly. Have you ever thought of creating a mediterrainean garden instead?

A pink bougainvillea would look fantastic...or if you want a classical effect, why not consider wisteria?

I noticed that you already have some rose shrubs growing there - so combining them with different foliages and texture would be nice.

I am lucky that I have 2 acres here. When we moved in 3 years ago, we started by replacing fencing and putting in the pergola and barn. Now the fun part-ROSES!!! I do plan to put in Mediterranean type perennials, but have to start with the bigger shrubs and trees first. Last year I planted 16 fruit trees and 15 Austin roses. Now I'm on to the OGR's which are my favorites. It gets too cold here for bougainvillea. Some people do, but they are taking a big chance. :)
