This photo isn't close enough to see the things that bother you. Can you get closer?

From what I can see, I see nothing that looks abnormal or un-healthy. Newer growth is clean and green. Older canes do turn brownish, and then, eventually, even gray-ish. At this level, it looks OK to me. Though I think it might could use another inch of soil.

Sorry, I hadn't noticed photobucket resized the images so small. They have been updated in the album HERE, and I will go take some more pictures now.

Also, I have taken many of the yellow leaves & dead leaves off that aren't pictured. These just fall right off when touched & I removed them. They pop up more every day, so the rose is becoming bare. What is pictured is about half of the growth in leaves it had two weeks ago.

They are pretty large, so I didn't want to fill the post with them.

I saw all of the images, and it looks like a perfectly healthy rose to me. The big leaves that turn yellow and fall off look like last year's leaves - that's what happens on all roses - all of mine are doing that right now - you touch them and they fall off, to make room for the new baby leaves.

At the bottom of the rose, there is a obviously dead (it is black) "stump" of an old cane that needs to be cut off - when you cut off old canes at the bottom, do not leaves any stumps - they just get in the way of any new growth that might want to come up.

If I were you, I would plant this rose right now - in a BIG (at least 2ft by 2ft) hole in the dirt, where it will get lots of sun. Then, stop looking at it - stop worrying about it, just make sure it gets water once a week, and let it alone for at least one or two months. It will take some time to grow more roots after you have planted it (do not dig it up to see if it is growing roots!).

After it starts to put out new leaves, and they are open, you can give it some rose food, but only if you follow the directions. Then post some more pictures - looking forward to them -

Hi, tangodoreen, the problems with this rose could be many, but let me offer some suggestions. A regular size bush [hybrid tea type] needs at least a 15 gallon size pot, you didnt say how long this rose has been in its pot. Roses need to have there soil changed every couple of years, so go get a bigger pot if needed and change the soil. This will take care of the possable over fertilization issue. If you repot the rose place it in a partly sunny place for a week or so to help it settle it to its new home. Watering potted roses is simple, place your finger into the soil and only water when the soil feels dry a couple of inches from the top, then give the bush a good deep watering. I noticed you are from Texas, I am assuming it gets good and hot were you are, stop thinking less water is better. Roses cannot be without water, if it gets above 90 degress you nay need to water every day or so, dont be shy about watering when it is hot. If there is a saucer on the bottom of the pot remove it, rose roots dont like to sit in water, this is in fact a slow death to a potted rose. I would start there and give the plant some time and see what happens. good luck bob

The rose was re-potted about 2 weeks ago into a big (at least 20 gallon) pot, but I can tell it will benefit from more space. It is definitely a burly plant.

I have been hoping this is just worry over nothing. It just seems to be duller & weaker every day. One thing I should clarify is that the yellowing leaves are undergrowth. They are the tiny fresher leaves that are going first. I know some new growth has died off, because there was a bud forming on a long thriving stalk that died before it opened. The stem went limp & bent, then the damage on the cane just seemed to kill it.

I will clip that dead stub on the base today, ground it in a large hole and water it. Then I'll post some pictures if there are any big changes. Thanks again!
