Hi.. I want to learning how to grow Dahlias
Comments (4)Pat...Thank you for great information about Dahlia with your favorite grower and Colorado Dahlia Society. I cannot believe they grow so many thousands of Dahlias. How they can digging up so many thousands Dahlias for storage? I quess they have a great place for storage. I have been looking around my tiny house to find a good storage for dahilias. I do not have basement. I understand the storage temp. would be best between 35-50. My loft room may be good place for it, but it sometime went higher than 60's. I am tempted to buy Dahlias from Park's Seed Co. They are so beautiful and great for cutting too. Jeannie...The American Dahlia Society is so awesome and very intersted to surfing with Dahlias grower collection their many pretty Dahlias. I have been trying to find Arkansas Dahlia Society, however it seem not have one in Arkansas. I found one nice webiste in Bristol, Indiana where my family lives in Indianapolis, IN. Comments (8)Annual poppies: Corn poppies, Breadseed poppies and California poppies, Natal. You might know corn poppies as Shirley poppies, and Breadseed poppies as Opium poppies. California poppies are perennials, and can be cut back in late May to bloom another year. I pull mine up and leave any stray little plants that haven't bloomed. I still sprinkle seeds of all poppies in November for a new start. Oh, almost forgot about Iceland poppies. They can be grown as winter annuals the way we use snaps and violas. They're kind of a sometimes thing for me, but I keep trying. They make a good substitute for tulips, if you can coax them into March and April bloom. Comments (1)I think the pea roots are shallow and the dahlia tubers will be a few inches under soil, so they would match fine to grow together. The dahlias can get pretty thick, though, so as long as your peas are either growing on the outside of the pot, or have been able to get taller than the dahlia, that would be fine. I thought of a similar thing since this year, I'm using a tomato cage to help hold up the dahlias (mine get to 2-3 feet tall and they are known for flopping over instead of growing upward). So with the cage around the dahlia for support, a short vining plant around 3-5 feet would be something nice to grow near it, too....See MoreOMG I'm cleaning my rose beds & can't believe how many roses are dead!
Comments (15)Sympathies on the losses, Beth. I know you love your oddball roses and you're one of the people in the US that has some of these unobtainable roses. It's frustrating to lose track of such things, but as you mentioned you've had a lot else on your mind. I'm glad you are at peace about your mom, but it still has taken a toll in emotions and time along the way. It's good that many of the roses will be replaceable, and I'm sure Burling would reserve some of them for you if needed. Take a deep breath and look at the roses that have SURVIVED and are blooming. For me that's the antidote to the rose carnage we have in cold zones after every winter. I grieve the ones I've lost till I pull the tags and wipe them from my lists, then they aren't staring me in the face to remind me of what isn't there anymore. Sometimes then I can look back at the losses after a year or two and appreciate something I've put in place instead as much or more. I wish I could share cuttings with you to help out, but getting plants in and out of California isn't something one can do on a casual basis I fear. Hang in there and take lots of fabulous pictures of the roses you still have! We'll be watching for them. Cynthia...See Moreolga_6b
