Hi.. I want to learning how to grow Dahlias

HI!

I wanted to learn how to grow lovely Dahlias. I live in Ozark (Mountain View, AR). I am thinking about grow for my hobby and like to try to selling cutting dahlias flowers for next year. I grow lots of daylilies and some roses. Do Dahlias like to grow along with daylilies and some roses? Do you have a good website for me to learning more about it? Do you grow it from seeds? Welcome to possible Dahlia addiction! On this forum you'll find a host of knowledgeable people who are so helpful and willing to help you acquire knowledge. My 3 favorites are JRoot, a canadian grower, Poochella in the PNW, so willing to share and Plantlady whose more than 6,000 plants are testimonial to her addiction. Now up in the right hand corner of this forum page you'll see a small area marked "search" with a go sign following. Just type in Dahlias by JRoot,or Dahlias by Poochella or Dahlias by Plantlady. You'll come up with a lot of hits that will keep you busy reading and digesting for all the winter months. Oh yes, it was suggested to go to the website of the Colorado Dahlia Society for info. reg. types, classes of Dahlias. Remember too, that we all learned sometime, so don't be shy...ask! Well, that takes care of Nov. & part of December. Have fun and don't take errors/goof-ups to seriously! Pat

Then to read what the average gardener does ...just put
"dahlia" into your browser window....and follow the
yellow brick road.

Iam looking for NO bitter lettuce. Like some Romane, green or red, or leaf lettuce. Spring or summer mixes not the spicy ones. No head lettuce for some spinach. or a want from my list . One of you cottagers posted a list of Michigan strange items a while back, so I'll try not to repeat that, but here are a few terms you might hear around here. The state is divided into two peninsulas, the upper one is the U.P. and the good folks who live there are yoopers. The peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge which crosses the Straits of Mackinac and has one end in MackinawCity. Nearby is MackinawIsland. All are pronounced the same way, courtesy of the French. People who live in the L.P. are called trolls, because, of course, they live below the bridge. The Mackinac Bridge is almost always called just the bridge. If we are going to the U.P. we say we are going up across. A U.P. city straddling the border to Canada is Sault Ste. Marie, pronounced Soo Saint Marie (French again). If we are heading that way, we say we are going to the Soo, and while we're there we may take a look at the locks. Tourists on Mackinaw Island (and now everywhere in the state) are called fudgies, due to the boxes of fudge many of them carry around after they have been enticed inside one of the many fudge shops by the irresistible aroma of boiling chocolate. Lots of Michiganders enjoy a meal of pasties (that's pass - tees), courtesy of the Cornish miners that came to live in the U.P. They are like a folded-over pie-crust with meat, potatoes, carrots, onions, and often rutabagas inside. (My mom always used to say rutabeggies.) They're very good, if a little on the dry side. A little gravy helps a lot. If you get too thirsty while eating one, you can always have a pop ( not a soda - you have to go to a soda fountain for those, which you can't hardly find anymore) Hope you learned something fun. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, Costco has bags of Spring bulbs in their warehouse right now; you can get a big bag of dahlia tubers for around $13. Check the back of the bag to find out what kind of dahlias they are, the dinnerplate ones are the largest flowering, both in flower and plant size. In my garden, the best spot for dahlias is next to the house, in a protected site with afternoon sun, and light friable soil. The larger ones definitely need staking - nothing more disappointing than a fully grown plant toppled over by wind. As mentioned above, to store for the winter, just dig them up after the first frost, let them cure a bit to dry out the ends. Sprinkle them with some fungicide or garden sulphur. I wrap the tubers up in newspaper and then into paper bags or boxes and store in a cool dark location. I just checked mine and most of them are still nice and healthy. Some of the smaller ones dry up, but then that's a good excuse to buy more. :) Make sure you label them unless you like surprises.

Lots of great info Manuel! I'm in the Tampa area now. All of my large trees are in the Keys, but I brought my small ones up here. Many didn't fare too well this winter. I guess they didn't like being uprooted from in the ground in October. However, the rest are doing very well so far in the Gritty. The summer rains do have me a bit concerned but that is an issue whether they are in Gritty Mix or soil. The only time that doesn't concern me is when they are in the ground in fast draining soil. I wish I had used screen in the bottom too. That mix pours out those holes of some of my pots but it's slowing down now. It does drain super fast BUT, don't let it fool you. The mix that is amongst the stem and root area stays wetter than you think. I know this because a couple of mine came out of the mix and it was dry on the sides, wet about 2-3" from the bottom and wet right in the center where the trunk and roots were. Once the roots spread out more, this is probably not the case but right after re-potting and or root pruning, it stays fairly damp. My Mr. Ambassador was doing well when I re-potted it a couple of months ago, then it rotted. This one had been in the same pot since summer of 2011 and had lots of roots. Perhaps it is just fussy about having it's roots messed with, who knows, but that one and Heart of Gold did rot after put in the Gritty Mix. Mr. Ambassador had not come out of dormancy yet and only showed tiny claws. I feel I should have waited to re-pot it when it was more active. Perhaps that played a part in it. Same thing with Heart of Gold so maybe something was going on with them or maybe they are both late to wake up but the other ones that were slow to wake up are in Gritty and are now waking up and doing well...so far! Indeed this was a mild winter, and I hope this winter is the same. I'm still going to bring all of them into the garage, on pallets with a heater and humidifier this year. On days when it's about 65-70 I open the garage door and let them get fresh air. Not looking forward to moving them all in the winter. I'm not used to this. In the Keys it is never an issue. 50 is a really cold night down there and it never phases them.

Pat...Thank you for great information about Dahlia with your favorite grower and Colorado Dahlia Society. I cannot believe they grow so many thousands of Dahlias. How they can digging up so many thousands Dahlias for storage? I quess they have a great place for storage. I have been looking around my tiny house to find a good storage for dahilias. I do not have basement. I understand the storage temp. would be best between 35-50. My loft room may be good place for it, but it sometime went higher than 60's. I am tempted to buy Dahlias from Park's Seed Co. They are so beautiful and great for cutting too.

Jeannie...The American Dahlia Society is so awesome and very intersted to surfing with Dahlias grower collection their many pretty Dahlias. I have been trying to find Arkansas Dahlia Society, however it seem not have one in Arkansas. I found one nice webiste in Bristol, Indiana where my family lives in Indianapolis, IN. I like to stopped by to visiting their Dahlia garden. I have been trying to find some more information about how to cut Dahlias for selling? How long the Dahlia blooms last long?

Kat - The husband spends hours digging & storing the dahlias- & he does it all himself- all 6000+ of them- some would call that excessive perhaps, but it keeps him out of the house! They take up a surprisingly small amount of room the way he stores them- stacked in milk crates up to 6-7 high as of this week.
There are a few southern dahlia societies- one in Georgia & one in Tennessee- & there's the Carolinas Society, too. This is the site for the Georgia Society- the conditions would probably be closer to yours than in Indiana.
