Tell your experiences with non-hybrid tea type roses
Comments (18)Sara-Ann, Another thing I thought of with Austins. In the light pinks there are many look-alikes. And white-based pinks vs. yellow-based pinks. Cameras can make the first appear to be the second. That's a question to ask if you have a preference. And it never occurred to me that Austins can have 6 small flower buds each on 4 upright stems on a main stem. Duh. But until I saw 'Windermere' it hadn't occurred to me. Here is one of my lusts growing over 5 ft. with multi mini candelabras atop a long stem. For a bouquet I have to cut one of the candelabras with buds tightly closed and opened?! I also cooled on 'Queen of Sweden' for that reason. I love my 'Apricot Nectar' sprays but those 2 Austins ..... maybe it was the formality and rigidity of how the buds/flowers were held that didn't ring my chimes. Growth habit (Austin) was the biggest adjustment for me. I still love the sculptured beauty of a hybrid tea bud but Austins in the blended pink/peach tones make me swoon....See MoreFeedback, please, on your experience with...
Comments (1)Only ones I've tried are the Nicotiana. I didn't get any plants from seeds that I had sown in the ground in April - well after last frost in Feb. No idea what the issue was, if they got ate as they germinated or never germinated I'm going to try again this year sowing indoors in seed pots. Hopefully that will be a better way to go. This was in Albuquerque, my crocus are blooming now and daffs soon will be....See MoreRant: Are your knowledge, experience and love of roses worth 15 Euro?
Comments (31)I confess, I am amazed (I frequently am) that apparently so many people are unable, unwilling or incompetent at using the vast trove of information out there, preferring to simply throw money at someone to do it for them. In the UK, there appears to be a flourishing online garden design service where people send a few photos of their space and, bingo, back comes a printed design and plant list while their bank account is several hundred pounds lighter. What sort of service is that? When I was in that game, I would spend days walking about in the design area, prodding at soils, peering at light and shadows, checking the aspects, the building design, placing of windows, doors etc. the clients aspirations, the placing of utilities. More often than not, the client didn't get much more than a sketchy drawing or 2 but at least I knew the place intimately...in a way it is simply not possible to do online...and frankly, never in a million years would I be spending money on an internet expert offering diagnoses from a photo. Nic, I can see this really bothers you so why not contact Houzz. The old GW had many rulings regarding business use and promotions and although it may well be impossible to do anything about it other than refuse to participate (there are charlatans and knaves everywhere), why not take a punt on doing something similar yourself since you do have expertise and experience which always comes across to customers...eventually. Evidently, there seems to be a market out there, filled with lazy people who just want someone else to make the effort on their behalf....See MorePlease give your opinion of and experiences with these Austin roses.
Comments (12)I have John Clare and Charlotte, both grafted. Charlotte is well established, JC is one yr old. My Charlottes are reliably hardy. They are close to 4' tall, tidy growth with good foliage. I lose only a few inches of cane per winter. They have no protection, live near the edge of the road so are subjected to snow plow abuse and road salt. So for a rose that can stand up to that, they deserve a place, otoh, they are kind of boring - average and well behaved, no drama. First flush is perfectly adequate, color is a nice light yellow that doesn't turn pink and fades only slightly. the blooms have nice form and keep their shape for a reasonable time. Rain and sun tolerance is good. Repeat is about average, scattered flushes. I got John Clare because it's often praised as Austin's best bloomer. I can't argue with that. Constant color, but not my favorite color, and a bit of a plain looking bloom. I think I'm going to move them and contrast them with white. I was pleasantly surprised by the growth, which was vigorous. Mine hit almost 5', with long upright branches, bushy and even, not the well known unbalanced octopus growth. This winter was mild, and they have very little damage....See Morebuford
