best white hybrid tea or floribunda rose
Comments (35)Moodyblue. In response to your 'unfragrant' Princess Of Wales rose which incidentally looks gorgeous, there is another similar one that does have a wonderful fragrance. That is A Whiter Shade Of Pale. Although it opens with a blush center that fades to pure white within 2 days.It withstands rain very well without any sign of spoiling. Unfortunately it's only available in the UK at present. This is a photo I took recently after planting in March. Comments (7)Larry, I'm outside of Knoxville, but I know some of the gardens near you well. Soil wise, the very large Garden that honors Ted and Mary Alice Mills in the city park in Soddy Daisy Tennessee is on a valley fill very like your soils. It's been there for at least eight years, so would be a good place to visit to see what mature specific bushes look like. More constrained is the garden at the Chattanooga ChooChoo, but it may have more recent introductions. I don't know the garden in Huntsville, but the Rose Society there are fans of modern roses. You might also be interested in the TriState Rose Society in Chattanooga. The ARS site below links to them or contacts for them on their Find Your Local Rose Society tab. Tri State is in Tenarky District; Huntsville is in with Georgia and Alabama. You do know that one person's fragrance is another's "I can't smell anything"? The best time to sniff is morning, before the heat of the day causes evaporation of some of the scent. (I think Frederick Mistral is a wonderfully scented rose, BTW) Here is a link that might be useful: American Rose Society website...See MoreHybrid Tea--Rose Information
Comments (5)ALAS! AARS is dead. Who'd a thunk ARS would out-live it? The American Rose Society rates roses, based upon reports from members. The problem with their ratings is that they are averaged nationally, and so don't reflect specific local conditions. IOW, in the beginning, we planted several roses rated very highly by ARS, only to discover that they were DRECH in our conditions. More better -- contact LOCAL rose societies for area-specific recommendations. They WILL know which HTs succeed in your area. Be careful, though, to specify if you do not plan to spray regularly (or at all) as that would probably significantly alter recommendations. And ARS can provide contacts for local rose societies in your area, so I would start at the American Rose Society website. Jeri...See MoreAAAGH! Peace Hybrid Tea Rose has no fragrance?
Comments (49)Hi, just wanted to be sure to thank everyone!!! for their time and thoughtfulness about alternate roses, vendors, etc. Curlydoc thanks very much for the extra effort and for your Hortico pics... If I was an experienced gardener, I'd rush out and get the Hortico, but am thinking that because I am a first-time gardener I really need to make sure I can do a decent job with my 2 tree roses, the 2 Lincolns and the 2 Special Occasion first so indeed 2010 I will be making a full blast to 3! Sutter's Gold roses to add to the collection for next year... Roses Unlimited says that indeed they can hold the order and since I have heard so many terrific things about them, I will go ahead and wait for the 3. If Special Occasion does indeed flourish I will update everyone on what I think about the fragrance. According to Heirloom rose and a few other American growers it is "one of the most fragrant hybrid teas" but a bit too belatedly I found some U.K. sites that only listed it as moderate so we shall wait and see. It's a Fryer rose......See Moreseil zone 6b MI
