Covering over a tennis court

I have a tennis court which I want to get rid of, but can't afford to rip it out. I'd like to fill the area and put grass in, but don't have ANY idea how to go about doing that. Any tips?

There are asphalt or concrete courts. Which do you have? Is there shrubbery around the court? Do you want the grass just because you like the looks, or would you consider making a patio or paved retreat area? Have you considered raised beds and using the court surface as already-paved pathing?

fill? is the court sunken?

meldy's got the best idea, reasonably... build raised beds over it, maybe around a central seating area?

I'm considered pretty conservative around here. I don't wear clingy clothes, spandex, etc. I insist DS teenager wears untorn, unwrinkled to visit grandparents, and try to stop the jeans from showing more than two inches of his boxers. Other than that, oh, well. Personally I have more trouble with his slouching and bad posture. I'm a teacher, and I don't like kids coming to school in beachwear, ie. very short tops and shorts. Parents don't get it and when we try to insist, there's trouble. OTOH, I have not shaved my arms or legs since I was 14, and then only enough to realize it's not for me. Therefore, there's very little, since the constant removal makes it heavier. But heaven forbid I should wear a sleeveless shirt or skirts at work!!! I'm called dirty, unkempt, un-feminine and slovenly. By my co-workers. The judgement is amazing. My tattoo, though, is ok. Odd. As a young girl in the late 50's, my mom put my sisters and I in blue jeans and my grandmother (she of the white gloves) was horrified. I also get in social trouble cause I don't give a darn about what's in fashion, just what looks decent and is comfy. I wear no makeup, don't dye my hair. (I'm not going grey, I'm turning silver). I refuse high heels. I have, however, been known to paint my toenails and wear perfume!! There are many here who try to look forever 19, and it's silly & a waste of money, men as well as women. People watching for me is a constant delight and I do it all the time, and yes, I sometimes wonder if they own a mirror, but, frankly, I wonder more about their lives and hopes, than their clothes. There is a thin line between "allowing" folks to dress as they please and too much information, but the fashion/beauty industry has some folks so besotted with image that many just toss the baby out with the bathwater. Fashion dictates that thin people's clothes should just be made larger for the un-thin, so I ignore them. What I really find disturbing is the trend encouraging pubescent girls to dress like 20-something sexbombs, and the lengths to which parents will go to go along with it and exclaim how grown up they look. Hi everyone, Many thanks for the feedback. My HVAC person also suggested that there are thermostats that monitor humidity as well as temp and kick on accordingly. He thinks that the a/c can handle dehumidification but is recommending a steam humidifier for the winter. Seriously considered radiant heat under the floor. Concern is that b/c the floor is "floating" only a minimal amt of heat will make it up into the room. To crank the temp of the radiant high enough to heat the room may jeopardize the maple floor. Natural gas IS available for heat. Thanks, too, for the reminder that mini-splits may not address ventilation/air exchange needs. Hadn't focused on that when considering the mini-splits. Any other thoughts? Sounds like geothermal, if sized right, may be the way to go. Any preferences between Water Furnace Envision, Comfort Aire or ClimateMaster TE049? These are the three pieces of equipment the contractors have given me quotes on. The heat pump they are quoting is a 4 ton, 2-stage Lennox system.

There's a couple of solutions that don't involve ripping up the tennis court. Think of it like a roof top garden, there's many people growing where there's no real drainage. My favorite is to create wicking beds. Really, this is by far the most practical solution with the best performance. The pic below shows a bed that's filled with lava stone and a float valve to keep the bed always full of water. The bags then sit right on top of the lava rock and "wick" up water from the bottom. The growth is so fast it's crazy. Here's a guy who did something similar. You don't have to be this fancy but it gives an idea of what you could do: https://vimeo.com/95573364 Also, check out Earthboxes -- they work under a similar principle. If you don't go with some wicking method, don't put dirt directly on the tennis court. You'd need to grow plants the way a commercial nursery does it -- keep everything in pots or barrels or milk boxes.

Don't get me wrong, we bought our house on the golf course with eyes wide open about the hazards, and we are avid golfers. HOWEVER, more than once I have been sitting on my screened-in back porch which faces the course, and observed a gentleman (!!) quietly and genteel-ly relieving himself behind a tree INTO MY YARD. He was hidden from his playing partners by the tree, but not from me, sitting quietly on my porch 30 feet away. You just never know. One of these days when I have seen enough, I'll wait until mid-stream and then holler, "HEY BUDDY!"

That's an interesting idea... I really like the idea of having the raised beds there...the court is sunken... how would I keep it from becoming a pool of water if I just put dirt in and keep certain areas paved? I

Oh, there was someone talking about a basketball court- let me see if i can find it! I'm pasting the answers, cuz it was part of a very long thread- if you're looking for it, it was on Garden Restoration Forum. They also talked about spongepainting a patio- but i don't know if they were serious. This was a really good thread, talking about how to get a garden ready for a garden tour.

Do your boys still use the basketball court? What are you going to do with it? I have an article somewhere that I saved - a gardener laid down gravel on a blacktop basketball court, planted some groundcover sedums but basically used the area for a container garden - it was magnificent. Also, Beth Chatto's famous English gravel garden was built on a blacktop parking lot. But you probably already know these things.

Momcat and Ginger,I used pea gravel to "get rid of" a concrete parking pad and some extra driveway I don't use. It makes a big difference in appearance. And, it's easy to take care of. You can put planters on it, benches, anything. A leafblower and rake removes the organic debris that inevitably ends up there, and any weeds that try to get in there are easy to remove.
