Advisable to save seed of non-organic heirloom tomatoes?

I'm getting excited about seed-saving possibilities, and am relatively new to gardening. While I know to stay away from hybrids when saving seeds, and that whenever possible it's good to make sue the variety will do well in my climate, I was wondering if seeds from store-bought, non-organic heirloom varieties might give me any trouble. I assume that since they're heirloom they will produce true to the parent fruit, and that any chemicals/pesticides used in growing the parent plants would not have any effect on the seed. Am I wrong? I just like the idea of being able to save seed from store-bought heirlooms, even if I don't know whether they'll do well in my climate. Thoughts?
