Heirloom rose gardens open house/celebrations in No Cal 2011?

I have several friends whom I am trying to lure into growing old roses. Part of my plan is to drag them to Open Gardens this Spring. My question is - can you folks let me know when the following have been scheduled? People's calendars get so crowded - I really need to finalize some plans soon.

1) Sacramento Historic Cemetery Spring open house/rose sale (the date I have is April 16th - is this correct?

2) SJHRG Spring whatever?

3) Celebration of Old Roses in El Cerito?

4) VIntage Gardens open garden of the personal garden - I was told that this is not happening this year, but am hoping that has changed.

5) Any other old rose garden/display that I don't know about?

Thank you very much for helping my conspiracy to recruit more old rose growers!

(Usually the weekend after the Sacramento event)

(FYI, it is ALWAYS the Sunday after Mother's Day)

*** There is a Rose Identification seminar in Sacramento the last weekend in Feb. Did you get that?

I'll be leading an "early bloom" tour in the Sacramento cemetery on Mar 26 at 10 am. A good chance to see banksiae, teas and chinas. It looks like spring is early this year so the teas and chinas may be pretty well over their first flush by our Open Garden (that means that the HPs and OGRs will be blooming, so there will still be flowers to see).

I'll also be doing a class in the Sacramento cemetery, along with my friend Bill Harp, on the classes of Old Garden Roses (cutoff is Hybrid Teas) on May 7. We will do a "Part 2" of that class in the fall, talking about HTs, Hybrid Musks, Polyanthas, and ramblers/climbers.

I double-checked and Spring in Guadalupe Gardens, where the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden is located, is indeed on Apr 23.

Ok, well call me the Good News / Bad News girl. Good News: the most fragrant rose that I have ever smelled is Color Magic (an HT). I planted one by my former back door and was so amazed that I planted two more. Magnificent wafts of fragrance as soon as I opened the door ~20' away, and that's with avg. coastal SoCal humidity, not Florida. YMMV, but I also loved the GIANT, mutable blooms which, even when cut fully open last a week in the house. ONE bloom will *completely* fill a LARGE room with sweet, sweet fragrance. Bad News: It could bloom more (or I could fertilize more). BUT, more important, it really would have done better for me with regular spray for mildew. Rust is not that big a deal, plant-wise, but in my experience, mildew will debilitate and kill it over time. It's a bloody shame, as Suzy would say. If you spray and have a cutting bed, this is a keeper. More Bad News: You will need to cross-reference mildew susceptibility for the fragrance suggestions above if you do not spray regularly. In particular, Double Delight: 2+ mildew; 4+ rust Rouge Royale: 4+ mildew even in 9% humidity in SoCal Mtns, don't bother Freddy Mistral, Sonia Rykiel: lovely but gone because I didn't spray Fragrant Cloud (and most anything orange) & Tiffany: 4+ mildew Good News: GramHat & Golden Celebration are bullet proof and I could not recommend them more. GramHat is pink, floppy and old-fashioned in fragrance and form, while GC, to me, is such a happy looking bush in bloom, no doubt due to my reaction to yellow, and also has very good fragrance and will try to fill a room. Blooms will blow faster, but it's a great repeater in this area. Good News: Anything Jeri recommends. Seriously. Good Hunting!

Kristi, just thought I should mention the Kordes perfume-fest Parole, aka Buxom Beauty. Was introduced to the USA in 2008, so it may have gone under your radar. Apart from its names (Jailbait/Dumpling - yeah, good work there, Kordes Marketing Dept), this deep cerise pink rose is pretty near perfect - no spray requirements, beautiful high-centred flowers with substantial petals (HUGE blooms in cooler weather), nicely productive with a fragrance that is really intoxicating and waft-y, richly sweet but sophisticated. No cold cream or myrrh. And it cuts like a dream. I'm up to six of these. They're my battery hens for vase filling. Just sayin'.

I've noticed that there are a few gems lying similarly hidden on the RVR website. It seems as though there are roses which were entered with just enough information for them to be purchased, but missing info on class, color, scent, etc. which prevents them from appearing when searching by any of those criteria. Considering their rather large inventory, if there's something you're seeking, try looking alphabetically. That's how I stumbled upon their "Louis Philippe from Florida" and "Reine des Violettes from Florida" (though I didn't end up buying them). :-) ~Christopher

Hmm, worse than a drummer next door? Someone I know had a bagpipe player next door. Now I happen to like bagpipe music but it's not everyone's cup of tea. And even I would not like to hear it next door in a close-built neighborhood. My own experience is that rust is a problem that is worse in spring and fall. In the midst of summer only susceptible roses seem to suffer from it. I do remember though that on the El NiÃ±o year about 10-12 years ago, all the roses had it, pretty much all summer long. It may just be that you are experiencing a local pocket of rust-inducing conditions this year. Someone twenty miles away may not have the same things going on that you are. Rosefolly

I bet that early bloom tour will be pretty spectacular.
We're starting to get bloom already, here. Banksia lutea is already making a show.

Shoot, Anita -- I'd come up for that, if we weren't going to a dog agility trial that weekend, and another the following weekend.

Vintage Gardens doesn't have anything on their website about the open gardens this year. It sure looks like it's not happening.

What a shame... I went last year and was blown away by the grandeur and beauty of these OGR. I'm hooked.

Yayyyyyy! What a treat that will be. I know it must be an extraordinary amount of work for him to get his yard all ready for the open garden. Thanks for keeping us updated.

For those of you who want to visit Vintage Gardens - good news! It's not yet been announced, but I understand that Gregg plans to open his garden on three dates in May - probably May 8, 21 and 22. There will be a requested donation.

As soon as the info is released, along with details, I'll post it here.

We're having a late, cool spring in California and my bet is that the garden will be at peak on the 21 and 22.

An update on that announcement. Look for the other thread here. Gregg has been forced to cancel this year's Open Gardens. But the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden should be in good bloom.

And of course, we hope many of you will make it to the Celebration of Old Roses at the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, on Sunday, May 15.

Celebration of Old Roses is the best!! So looking forward to that event. Even just going and walking around the San Jose Heritage Rose garden while the flowers are in bloom or at their height (or close to) is a great experience...regardless of whether there is an open event or not....
