Celebration of Old Roses was lovely!
Comments (10)The tables groaned under the weight of the blooms. I don't think I've ever seen more cultivars at the Celebration. Carolyn Parker brought buckets of long blooming stems of large climbers. It was magical! We had contributors from as far away as Mendocino, Southern California and California's Gold Country. The San Francisco Rose Society had a table and loaned vases. The Celebration is a labor of love of many dedicated volunteers from the Heritage Roses Groups, The Heritage Rose Foundation and individual rosarians who organize the rental of the Community Center, who disseminate information about Old Rose organizations, who buy and serve food, who set-up and break-down, who operate silent auctions and raffles, and who supply blooms. I only managed to bring 66 different cultivars because Janelle, who drove from Sacramento, spent most of Saturday selecting and labeling blooms with me. Two armies of volunteers when to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden with Jeri Jennings and to Vintage Gardens with Kristina Osborn and Carolyn Parker. More visitors should have been there to enjoy the beauty of the day. Each year I learn something while comparing blooms and observations with other rosarians. For example, the lovely but obviously mislabeled "Rosa nutkana" I received from Forest Farm that looks like a 6-foot tall Hybrid Spin and that has been blooming for a month now, seems to be Rosa webbiana. My "Georgetown Tea" from Vintage does seems to be the right cultivar. "Schmidt's Buff Giant," which was was light pink in my garden, matches the palest yellow Anna Olivier from the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. Two of us are convinced that "Fiddletown Pink Noisette" is the same as Laure Davoust. The blooms and foliage have similar shapes, but the habit of the two is different. The "Paul Noel" Hybrid Wichurana I received from Ashdown appears to be François Juranville. I received a small plant of a double form of Rosa californica that is clearly the true species, unlike the the rose in commerce as "Rosa californica plena," which is, at the least, a hybrid, and maybe not related to Californica at all. It was quite a day. I went home sated, exhausted, starved....See MoreCelebration of Old Roses this Sunday 5/19
Comments (11)Thanks Jeri for the name of that purple rose, Starbucks would be nice on a cart, scones and coffee. Lux Jeri, After attending the Old Rose Celebration for several years ( I live within 7 miles of Moeser Lane) I've noticed that all the remontant O.G.R's are pretty much all sold within one hour of opening. In 2012 I took a complete inventory that showed this was true, by running around and writing down the; -number of every pot of rose, by class name - still available for sale -at every vendor. -at noon. I believe more Old Garden Roses would be sold, and the buying public would be happy, if vendors increased by c. 25% the remontant O.G.R.s they bring for sale. In 2012 at 12:15 P.M the only remontant Old Rose left was a 'Marie Pavie' that I bought, and at the same tabe there were several assorted bands of Hybrid Musk cultivars, , and, at the vintage gardens table, dozens of bands of H.T.s and Florries, and several L.F.C's , There were more than a dozen cultivars of Ramblers which remained on the vintage gardens table when I left around 3 p.m.. One vendor near the entrance had several gallon pots of a modern Florabunda available at 3.p.m. as well. I believe this shows that it is the remontant Old Garden Roses that sell best, at this event. Getting there early will not solve the issue, as there is a limited number of remontant O.G.R.s to be bought, the vendors need to increase their inventory of remontant classes of O.G.R.s at the Old Rose Celebration. . I hope my efforts do some good. If you'd like to pass on this information, to anyone who could make a difference I'd be so grateful. I took the inventories because I have an interest in the promotion of Old Garden Roses If I were a vendor I'd increase the number of pots of remontant Old Garden Roses by 20 % to 25% this year. Thanks Jeri, I've been ill and not been able to post this sooner....See MoreThe Celebration of Old Roses

Comments (15)I ended up with the Kathrinerl (thanks to Jeri's great salesmanship -- or, rather, I should say, "matchmaking"!), for which I am glad -- I've got a spot I think it will like (p.m. shade) and where its color should shine. I grew the one parent, Bonica, in Massachusetts, where it was a great rose, and have always been interested in the other parent, Gruss an Teplitz, but hadn't gotten there yet, so this variety will be interesting. As usual, a very enjoyable event. For one (among many!), I was blown away by the spray of 'Bobbie James' on display -- it was practically ethereal, a virtual flight of white butterflies. So many blooms we would otherwise never see...and so many rose lovers all in one place....See Moreportlandmysteryrose
