First Timer with Gallica's, Suggestions Please!

After an entire weekend filled with a huge snow and ice storm, a trip to the hospital and a close call with a fallen tree, I am not a happy camper. 6 inches of snow and ice, and my DH got a huge gash above his lip trying to sled. Unable to drive, I had to walk to our nearest walgreens (which thank God it was open) and get as much medical supplies as possible to treat it ourselves. We got to the doctor yesterday to pay $103 for the doc to tell us we did a really good job, and they don't do stiches after 8 hours from the accident. Thanks doc. Sorry for the rant, my DH will be just fine, but what a miserable experience!

On to the one nice thing that has come from this ice storm...

The neighbors tree split in half because of the weight of all of the ice, and just missed our house and our bedroom actually, which would have had us going to the hospital all over again! Why is this nice you ask? Because the area by the tree is no longer a shade area, it will be full sun come spring. So I have to move my bluebird hydrangeas that are there and I want to plant some Gallicas! Yay!

I am in zone 6b/7a, south of Nashville, and I would love to hear from those of you who have & love Gallicas, and to get your suggestions on what kind to get. When you post your favorite, I would love specifics about the bloom time, and if it is very thorny. The only thing I want for sure out of the plant is BOLD colors. No light pinks, yellows, whites, or apricots please :) Thanks so much!

Glad to hear you and your DH are fine. Looks like you're going to be dealing with the ice for a while. I hope the roads are at least safe to drive on.

For a really bold statement from a gallica you should try Charles de Mills. He's the tallest and bushiest of my six gallicas. The blooms are huge for a gallica, a deep beet red with incredible shadings from red to purple. If you get him own root he will wander and make a dense thicket. Lots of babies to share with friends. If you don't want him to sucker get him grafted. Blooms for about six weeks for me.

It does so depend on what look you want. Charles de Mills is always wonderful as stated but large. Smaller would be Duc de Guiche, for a really dark velvety red Tuscany Suberb, I really love Hippolyte for a deep purple red or of course Cardinal de Richelieu-very fragrant. Camaieux is a great bold Stripe. These can all be kept at about 4 or 5 feet. Charles is the only relatively thorny one of this lot. Most Gallicas have only small bristles. Dramatic red but thorny is Perle von Weissenstein..that one can get large. Since you cant do much go to Helpmefindroses and search Gallicas, Hybrid Gallicas and Hybrid Chinas. There are some wonderful obscure ones but they are hard to find.

but then saw something called fortissimo which really looked beautiful and more interesting. I had Fortissimo bloom for me the first time this spring, and I was really WOWED by it, and thought it was very showy. I liked it a lot better than the all yellow Dutch Master. Does one tend to multiply more than the other? Not sure if one is more prolific than the other. Does one tend to do better in the Massachusetts area - zone 6? I think both would do equally well in your zone. Is it worth paying this much more for bigger bulbs? What will be the difference? I don't think there would be enough difference to pay that much more for bulbs that are just a little bigger. Chances are that all of the 12-14 cm bulbs would bloom just fine for you...possibly with the blooms a very little bit smaller. Would 100 daffodil bulbs be enough? Most of what i read says to plant the bulbs 5 inches apart... so if i do the math correctly 100 should be more than enough right? If it was me, I would sort of plant either 3 or 5 bulbs in a big hole, trying to space them with about 2-3" between them. I would prefer several blooming in bouquets, than what I would a line of blooms all in row. Possibly others will have input on the spacing and planting though. Welcome to the wonderful world of growing daffs. They are easy, and carefree and will reward you with beautiful springtime blooms for years and years, with only an occasional need to dig and divide them if they get too thick. Sue...a daff fanatic

Ye, you get this junk which costs you over $200.00 and then you need a plumber to install it. My solution is called the "WaterMaker Mini" by numbus. It costs around $80.00 and fits to any american tap socket, it can then be cliped on and off the tap as you use it. Over all depending on the amount of plants you have you will save a massive amount that buying it distilled. It ofcause is no good if its only for a few plants, then your 2 gallon bottles will last you plenty of time to make it acceptable. Ok, the cold thing. VFT's come from America, they are tough suckers!!! These plants go dorment which means they are used to winters and infact can survive in conditions as low as -20 F!!!! So no prob with that, people use terrariums alot on conditions that are not ideal to the plant, to kinda fake the plant out to believe its still back home in Carolina. You can use one if you please, just no sun with a sealed terrarium like we said. If you plan on puttin them outdoors, get them used to the sun light by doing what I said. Ok, the most important things to a VFT's happiness is good soil (peat moss/perlite mix with sphagnum moss top layer), good water (distilled, rain, R/O) and good light (full sun (once they are used to it), Fluorecent, Compact Fluorecent) Other than that, use the tray method to always have water in the tray, if the winters get cold by you (snow and such) you can leave your plant out for winter (dont give as much water, it should be moist then but not wet, no feeding the plant during dormency time) then you could apply a mulsh to protect the plant or a tarp if you have ice winds which will burn them. At this time if the plant goes into dormency you will see the growth slows down to a stop, cut off any and all dead leaves and like I said not as much water. A nice pot to have if you can find one are these new lightweight fibreglass insulated pots. They have double lining (dont know if there is a filler inside) that keeps the roots warmer during cold and cooler during hot (kinda like the roof insulation idea) You should be able to save your plant if the bulb is fine like Byron_1 said, if you have been soaking it constantly with this hard water it may be a good idea to get fresh soil mix, carefully unpot so you can check to root system/bulb and if its not too much then repot it and give it good light and water. Like we have said, they are quite tough, most times than not they spring back to life. If you need a light bulb instead of growing outdoors, get a cheap everyday lamp stand and a compact fluorecent bulb (it should say the equivelent to a 100watt incandesent) and place this bulb 8-10" above the plant media for about 14 hours per day in summer. Well, I got that out of the way. I went against the grain and got white appliances as opposed to stainless. I think it will ultimately look better in our kitchen. Here's what I ended up doing. Samsung FD Counter Depth Kitchenaid Slide-in gas range (floor model) Kitchenaid Microwave/Hood Bosch 800 Series Panel Ready (discontinued floor model) The two floor models are basically in perfect condition. However the range is missing the burner caps which I will order online. I priced them out today. Holy cow! In black they will cost $150. In the gray that matches the grill colors, they add up to over $300. How is that possible! I went with the discontinued Bosch 800 series since the store gave it to me for less than a current model 500 series unit. Overall I thinkg I did well. I dropped the name of our contractor and the the salesperson basically gave me employee pricing. Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

Beuhl- I'll do some measuring to see if the laundry closet could be moved the the dead space that currently leads to the master bedroom. The electical panel is there, as well. The only thing that may not be possible is shifting the living room door. I'll have to check. You're going to laugh at me, but from the first two layouts, I like the peninsula option better. I love having the window above the sink because the squirrles run back and forth along the fenceline just outside of it. Would the space to the right be utilized as a breakfast area? mnerg- You're right, that would help with space. I wonder how noisy that is with a front loader? I've never really used a stacked set. I'm actually having a platform made to lift them right now, because I find that I have to sit on the floor. Looking at the plans, I'm really surprised by what a difference pushing the laundry wall back makes. I can't picture how much space the 75" in the breakfast room is. I'll tape it off on the floor tonight. DH has always loved the idea of a window seat and a little table (if not french doors). I just never thought we had room due to the bifold laundry doors. Do you have any idea how deep a bench should be? I guess pictures make all the difference, because in my mind, I saw the peninsula on the dining room side. It never even occurred to me to move the fridge. (DUH, young!) I do really like the idea of the prep sink. I wonder if my pots/pans would fit in the 24" cabinet next to that. It might be easier to access than the lazy susan?? Wise Friends-- I love the idea of trading the laundry for a pantry. Here is the only hangup for me. If I move the laundry, closing off the master bedroom door, I'll have to do a loop through the house to get to the other bedroom when it serves as a nursery in a year or two. Do you think that will drive me crazy in the middle of the night? Right now, the rooms almost adjoin. I don't know what to think, having no young ones at home right now. Please chime in, moms. :) Lav- I hadn't considered swiping space from the master. We're doing that soon on the other side of the room to increase the master bath. I'll look at the numbers. I know it's the biggest room, but it's not huge. I can't remember that room size off hand. I know I'd love the look of a display/pantry wall. I'm going to print these and look at them side by side so I can really digest them. **THANK YOU!**

Thank you lindyb & patricia, your experience is very helpful to me!

I have a huge amount of room, so the largeness of the bush is of no real matter.

I may have a problem with the suckers, since I wanted to place these against the fence, and suckers could go under the fence into the neighbors yard. Where do they sell grafted Gallicas? I was looking at Rogue Valley but they are all own root. Thanks again!

I'm generally in your same zone here in Baltimore County, MD. I only have, currently, two gallicas; Tuscany Superb and Duchesse de Montebello. The latter is beautiful with petite fleshtone white-pink cupped flowers, but since that color isnÂt your liking, I wonÂt recommend it. ItÂs very ÂdemureÂ and sweet.

Tuscany Superb however is beautiful if you want it purple and I mean it rich red-black-purple velvet. The petals fall and get mauve tones but some days they look like velvet, others they pick up more on scarlet. Overall merlot colored!

For concord grape/slate coloring there is Cardinal de Richelieu, but here in Maryland it is more blackspot prone than most so I don't have it. But it has BOLD coloring for sure.

Another would be the rose 'EvÃªque' or 'The Bishop' which sometimes isn't labeled as a gallica, and sometimes is.

Others that I donÂt have but recommend in the gallica clan for shock value in terms of color consulting the books I have would have to be:

'dÂAguesseau', I guess the color is watermelon-crimson. I'm intrigued by this one this one, Suzy Verrier in her book "Rosa Gallica" says the color is very clear and unique, you don't see it too often in the plant kingdom.

'Scharlachglut' (also known as 'Scarlet Fire' or 'Scarlet Glow') single red-scarlet crimson. Bred from a hybrid tea and the gallica 'Alika', so healthwise may be slightly less gallicaish.

'James Mason' Opens true RED and ages to blue-red, so a cooler crimson. A cross of 'Scharlachglut' and 'Tuscany Superb' so it takes more gallica, with the coloring from the hybrid tea grandparent.

A moss rose 'Henri Martin' has nice clear cerise-crimson flower and has good health like the gallicas and would be at home in the same bed.

Pickering roses in Canada sells grafted roses. I highly recommend them. My favorites are Charles de Mills, Tuscany Superb, Belle de Crecy (a lovely purple), Duchess de Montebello, Alice Vena, and Duc de Guiche.

My favorites in your color scheme are Charles de Mills, Tuscany Superb, Belle de Crecy, Beau Narcisse, Alice Vena, Duc de Guiche, Surpasse Tout, Rosa Mundi and Apothecary Rose. I also love many others, but these are just for start :)
They all can get quite big in zone 6b/7a. 5-6 feet high and wide is possible with good pruning, otherwise they will be even bigger. Duc de Guiche is currently more then 7 feet tall for me.

novice gallica grower here too but have a fixation on singles and semi-doubles. Not wanting pink either so am hoping that the basic apothecarie's rose or la belle sultan will fit the bill.

You've gotten some great suggestions. You may want to think about adding one or two lighter-colored roses for contrast? Maybe the striped Rosa Mundi, one of my favorites.

I love the packed-full-of-petals form but also appreciate the charms of the singles. It's always good to have some variety. I am interested in both La Belle Sultane and Alain Blanchard (it's spotted!) but have read that they are bs-prone in my climate so have hesitated to add them to my garden.

You can keep them from spreading by using really large pots in the ground, or if those are too hard to find trash cans cut in half to make two per or line the planting hole with double landscape fabric-dig a big hole and give them plenty of room. You can let them get as tall as you like which here in the northwest some can get pretty tall but I keep mine cut back to keep them good and bushy and get lots of bloom.

campanula, the varieties 'Alika', 'Scharlachglut', 'James Mason' and 'Tuscany' are all single or semi-double. They might also be good for you! =)

Here's a link to some photos in the gallery of some gallicas in my yard--the colors are pretty accurate on my monitor. The oldest of them are just 3 years old this year, so they're still shaping up, but they've all done pretty well no spray and no extra water.

Labrea, It is sooo very wonderful to see full bush shots with your close up's of the blooms, what a great way to end the day :)

Everyone has been so much help to me, I surely do appreciate it!

wow, no wonder some of you great gardeners wait around all year for your once blooming Gallicas!

Okay, I am definitely getting 3 Belle de Crecy's, I love the color and adore those button centers! Also, I think I am going to get 2 dÂAguesseau's from Vintage, but I have to wait till next spring to get them, they have to custom root it. I can tell it will TOTALLY be worth it though! That color makes me want to eat watermelon so badly! Thanks for the suggestion Oath5 :) The colors and blooms on these Gallica's are to die for, thanks everyone for your help, I am bookmarking this thread because I am sure I will be making more room for several of the other suggestions you all have given me!

Your welcome Natalie! =) The picture in Suzy Verrier's 'Gallica' book stood out to me, the color is far more bright than the other pinks, so I thought it would suit what you were looking for.

Belle de Crecy and D'Agusseau together would be really nice, but you probably should throw some other colors in to make it really flow. You should plant some various moss phlox and then nice airy/soft crimson-rose and purple things like red valerian, verbena homestead purple, verbena bonariensis, bright colored phlox like 'Starfire', 'Nicky' 'Blue Paradise' and 'Orange Perfection' or even an early yellow rose like 'Canary Bird' for the background.

And while you said no apricot or yellow, shots of either bright lemon-yellow or warm golden yellow, verging on apricot would look really attractive spiked throughout the spring/summer. Just a few ideas!

Thanks Max, I have a climbing yellow rose I have been meaning to move, this may be just the spot for it, and I love verbena! Phlox would be beautiful as well, it's so dainty and comes in some great colors.

Natalie, I'm late to this thread but you chose exactly the rose I would have suggested. Belle de Crecy was my first Gallica - given to me as suckers after I fell in love with the bloom. Watching her change colors is fascinating (she does that graying thing as she ages). I think when you see her you will want to find room for more Gallicas (I'm working on that this year.)
