What has made your life a bit better lately?

I've been able to solve 2 problems recently: The Dog Whisperer DVDs have helped me with my dogs so much! Walking all 3 of them together has become not only possible but fun. The other thing is Silpat silicone mats for baking cookies. The cookies come out perfect and cleanup is a snap. No more scrubbing and scrubbing of the grease baked on to the cookie sheet.

So, what has made YOUR life a little better lately? Or what little problems do you wish you could solve?

4 weeks of Physical Therapy I feel almost human again not tentative about reaching for anything or lifting anything more than 5 pounds. Nice to be almost pain free!

I LOVE the Dog Whisperer!!!! He has also made my life better. I have two horses in rehab - one for a tendon injury, one for a ligament injury and I can safely walk and control two horses AND my dog together for our daily exercise walk thanks to Cesar. It's amazing.

Going to turn on the TV and see if there's a new episode airing. Thanks for the idea!

I believe the long-term prospects for the US economy are bleak. Regardless of who is president, what the deficit is, etc. the country's infrastructure is largely dependent on oil. Oil is a finite resource, that is going to go nowhere but up in price over the long-term. We have missed the boat on implementing forms of alternative energy - should have been done decades ago, to avert this crisis. I am a single Mom, raising a teen alone, and it makes me a bit nervous. However, I was frugal even as a young person, so tightening the belt is like putting on a familiar old bathrobe. In 2008 I spent a total of $17 on plants - a couple flats of annuals - and approx. $200 on tools, potting soil, etc. at the nurseries. That is significantly less than previous years. Nevertheless, I acquired more plants than ever! How? - Started hundreds of plants from seed via the winter-sowing method, at least 50 species/cultivars I'd never grown before. - Hosted a Spring plant swap and received a couple dozen new types of plants and offloaded a bunch of extras! Win-win. - Ordered 50 more shrub & tree seedlings from the NH State Nursery, for $1 apiece. ONE DOLLAR each. These seedlings are 1-2 years old, so they're smaller than what you would buy in a nursery, but most have grown remarkably fast. They become $20-30 plants in a couple years! State and county organizations are a GREAT source of inexpensive plant stock. - Placed a small order at Bluestone during their June 50% off sale.

How has Composting changed your life?

This sounds crazy, but I think composting taught me about the difference between our built environment and the natural environment, and it also made me realize how plastic infests so much of our society. I feel like everything should be biodegradable, in one time span or another, and when stuff persists I now think twice about why that is, for better or worse. What is quality, what is trash? If something is going to exist for a long, long time, it better be something worthwhile. And then there's just the plastic/styrofoam grossness. I think my first lesson with this was from shredding paper and composting it and having hundreds of little pieces of plastic envelope windows remain in what is otherwise gorgeous black soil. It just really made me realize what biodegradable means, and why plastic can be such an environmental pest. Long story short, because of composting, I am a great deal more conscious about our household waste stream--recycling is second-most-fun after composting--and I have made a concerted effort to change my purchasing habits. I'd rather spend a lot of money once and purchase a high quality, long-lasting, sustainably produced whatever than to continue buying easily breakable disposable junk and eventually replacing it with more of the same. ("buy cheap, buy twice") Thank you compost!

What HAVEN'T they been up to? LOL. Xena likes to steal. About three times a day I have to find and return the christmas-tree shaped plant pick that she steals from a mini-rose on the kitchen table. I tried taking it out and putting it away, but in a fit of pique she started to eat the blooms! Back the pick went, back to stealing went Xena, and no more flowers became mutilated. So far this system is working for us. Jasmine is being quite the sucky baby. If my posture even suggests the existance of a lap, she is on it. I leaned against a low box the other day while taking a phone call and she scrambled right up like I was sitting in an armchair or something. Then she proceeded to look perturbed because there really wasn't enough lap there to lay across and she was clutching with all her worth and STILL sliding down my legs. She has perfected the art of "log rolling" - as I turn over at night, she skillfully balances and walks as I turn, then settles onto whatever side ends up at the top when I am done. I suppose I wouldn't mind all the warm snuggly attention. But she drools. Ew! LOL Ruby? What can I say about Ruby. Today I wore make-up because we were going to a local pizza joint to celebrate DD's birthday with family. I had a few moments before it was time to leave so I snuck in a few moments of reading. She trampled over to me across the back of the couch, placed her paw on my head to steady it, and proceeded to sniff all over my face. First she inspected the eye shadow. Then she sniffed each individual eye lash, running her flat nose along the length of each one. She checked out the blush on both cheeks. But the best snurffle was reserved for last! My lipstick. Burts Bees, and it has a bit of mint in it. She sniffed and snotted and sniffed some more. Then she delicately gagged in my face (she does not like the smell of mint at all LOL). No wonder I don't "make myself up" very often!

In a way, yes, in other ways, about the same. Financially, about the same. I have a happy marriage with a great DH and we've had quite a few fun adventures together. My parents had a very happy marriage, albeit with less adventure, just way too short. They never had a mortgage on their home and always bough cars with cash. Dad was what I would call a "gentleman farmer" in the sense that he ran the farm and other ancillary operations from an office and Mom, with a fine college education, was a stay at home Mom until Dad died far too young, at 52, leaving Mom a widow at 44. While Mom would have preferred graduate school, instead she stepped in and ran the farm and excelled. She was the first woman on a number of agriculturally related boards and not just local small time ones either. While she enjoyed the challenge, especially in a male dominated world, and loved our small farming town, I also think she was trapped by the circumstances. Her plan was for my brother to take over the farm completely after 8-10 years at which time she planned on going back to graduate school, but my brother never got around to taking over the operations (I don't know any other way to put it, he's smart and knows the land well and will work hard on something that interests him, but he never developed the stick-to-it day to day work ethic). While this was going on, I went to law school and then got my LLM. Mom ran the farm until her seventies, but by that time we rented out all our land. Unfortunately about 8 years ago the farm started going down hill financially, most income was going to debt service, and at the same time Mom was developing AMD. Our banker and accountant realized that that something needed to be done to save the farm and came to me and suggested that we move to professional management. Mom saw that this was the right move, but my brother was resistant although eventually went along with it without a family fallout. That was a tense time, but he liked the bank management/manager and was not cut out of some control especially with marketing the crops, which is his forte,and now agrees that it was a good decision, actually I think it was a relief. We also sold off about 30% of the land, which was enough to retire all debt and pay the capital gains (basis was from the 1930s, so ridiculously low), with a bit to spare. The farm, though smaller, is doing very well, throwing off nice income to the three of us, while retaining a contingency fund, so all is well, and it's still a nice legacy even after selling a bit of the land, it is now a bit over 5000 acres total, cropland and timber. DH and I are both professionals and have had fairly successful careers. I am a lawyer, a partner in a great law firm, and DH is a dentist, who sold his practice when we recently moved. We are both scaling back. I am staying with my firm, working remotely, with regular trips back to the office for a couple of weeks every few months as the need arises. DH lucked into a two day a week job as an independent contractor with a good dental practice in our new location. We will probably continue to work along these lines for another 2-4 years. We have a wonderful, responsible daughter and son-in-law and a precious grandson. I think we will be better off than Mom in our later years, not so much financially because she is in great shape (she also had some money of her own and was a good investor), but because we planned ahead. She had planned to stay in her large house in the small town for the rest of her life. However that became impossible for her to manage. She moved to independent living in the city where I worked last year and now she moved to Colorado with us, living at a wonderful independent living center less than 5 minutes from us and I can go see her everyday. She seems content and loves having me so nearby, but it is hard to move to a new state and town at 86. We built our retirement house, actually a duplex, at 62 with (for) our DD and SIL, near all essential services and making it easy to maintain. As we age it will be easy for our DD to check on us as necessary, just pop over for five minutes and then go back to her regularly scheduled life. But, for now, DD also has a built in babysitter much of the time. If at anytime as we age we need more help than I am willing to ask from our DD, we can easily hire a caregiver for far less than Mom's place costs on a monthly basis and still stay at home (at least if our health is as good as Mom's is right now).

The doctor scaring the begeebers out of my wife.Told her she was a borderline diabetic,had high blood pressure and high c------------ .She has become a fanatic about healthy lifestyle living.I have gone along with her in that regard and feel so good people think I am a nut case-Whistling and/or singing as I go awandering all over the place.

I have been so down about the weather that today when I saw the weather clip of a man on his roof shoveling the snow, I felt a little better. Oh, Mexico, New York!!!!!How Awful!!! Are any of you caught up in that?

I do like the Dog Whisperer too.

Yesterday, the high temperature was actually above freezing and the wind was moderate. I was able to go outside for a while.

On Saturday a film crew arrived and shot a commercial at our house. They were great. It's for one of those Learning Channels "Life Lessons" promos (you know, like the one with the woman drinking wine and typing at her computer maniacally "life lesson number # : don't write emails when you are drinking"). So we'll be seeing our living room, dining room and entry hall on TV.

The crew was really fun. They took bets about various aspects of our house, then asked us to see who won. They gave us unlimited access to their craft service, and were meticulous about caring for our house and putting things back where they belonged. They had to remove our artwork from the walls, and hung their own (to avoid clearance problems), but took good care of our stuff. The location manager was very cool.

They filmed in two locations over two days. They wanted to use my daughter's room, too, but were worried about not being able to get the necessary equipment in the room. So they used another location, but loved her room so much, they literally copied everything in the room just the way we have it, or so they told us. I'm looking forward to seeing that one!

You don't pay any income tax on up to 14 days' of location fee income. Only 13 days left for this tax year!!! So, how shall I spend the extra cash?

Paris, anyone?

Hiring a laywer to help finish up with my grandmother's estate. Tension is leaving my neck and I'm sleeping much better now.

And having friends who travel and are willing to have me tag along as a family member.

Hail Cesar! I have a huge crush on that dude, and I'm the Alpha Queen here with goofy longing aren't-you-awesome looks from my pack since trying his techniques. Furbabies are seriously a huge huge bright spot always for me; thanks for asking :)

School is nice. I'm using those grey cells and feeling that nerdy rush of a challenge, things to solve - my mom and her puzzles always comes to mind. And a trip to Europe is required... what's cooler?! Except for being away from the afore-mentioned furbabies.

My thumb doc is awesome and funny and brilliant. I think I'll ask if he's married ;]

I bought a bunch of pretty seeds too, and my zone-eighter plants are all doing fine this winter. Ah, now for spring!

I love the Dog Whisperer. At first I thought it was just a gimic but then I watched a few episodes and was amazed. It gives me such hope to see him work with dogs that have much worse problems than my own dogs. I miss watching it since we had to cancel cable.

That's so cool about the commercial Debra. How did you get in touch with them? You must be a great decorator. I don't think my home would look like much without the artwork on the walls.

As for me, I've been playing online computer games. The expansion for World of Warcraft just came out and I'm addicted again. I just hope I'll be able to break away from it again this summer to take care of my garden properly. But it's awfully nice to have it right now since it is too cold to do anything outside and thinking about gardening makes me want to order more roses which is something I can not do right now.

Athena, my brother is addicted to that! He had to warn my sister to never get started, lol. He has a seasonal job at a river, with a little snowboarding instruction on the side in winter, so he's cooped up in the Baltimore chill most days this season.

He's not a gardener but definitely the outdoors sort. It is interesting how many folks have to change their interests over winter.

I do usually cook a lot in winter. Cookies sound great. But I made a huge cassoulet that took 3 days to make at Christmas, and I don't believe I've turned on the oven since, lol.

Hoov, your post made me think about the good things that are happening in my life. I would have to say my weekly band practice is making things better. I get to hang out with 5 nice guys, play loud music on my electric mando, challenge my brain to write and play and remember songs and get away from my regular life every week. Makes me forget about the rain for a few hours.

Joe, glad to hear you are feeling better in time for spring.

And I also love my furbabies. The are a constant amusement.

Some of the fruit trees up here are starting to bloom which is nice.

One in particular, right along I-80 in the greenspace between Vacaville and Fairfield, has caught my eye for the past week. It's a small tree surrounded by much larger ones.

It's covered with purple/pink blossoms and it makes for a beautiful contrast to the other trees, which are still gray and barren.

I look for it everyday.

Winter time - This time of year I don't know about making life better, but I do try to appreciate the little things that can make a day better, and say Thank You (maybe not out loud)

The silly chickadee bringing a smile with it's antics in a shrub by my carport I would have missed if I hadn't chosen just that moment to take out the garbage- that baby in the back of a grocery cart who makes eye contact and gives a big grin for no reason other than wanting a smile back...all thank yous.

Today, a bigger one. I've been arguing (negotiating) with the IRS since last May over what they said was a deficit in our 2003 taxes. Audit by mail, which meant countless phone calls, faxes, copies mailed, letters of explanation, and about every 6 weeks I'd get another bill where they were still unconvinced, penalties and interest accruing to about $4000 total. This morning, finally, a letter - "We are pleased to tell you we did not make any changes to the tax reported on your return."

I almost feel like my honor has been restored, I'm not a deadbeat or a cheat. And for all my effort, I may just buy myself some extravagant little thing :)

The ignornet coverage of my home town, after my southern wanderings, Mexico, NY. Why is it in the news? Must be a slow news day. Seems like a normal snow fall for a town in the snowbelt.

Now, I remember the storm of 1950 something etc-----. Blah! Blah! Blah! I do remember having to climb out of our second story window to get out of the house. Part of our house had a flat roof. Easier to shovel snow off of it.

Blah! Blah! Blah! That will teach my DW to laugh at our 4' corn, indeed!

My aunt who still lives in Oswego, NY is always sending us boring newspaper clippings of how awful the snow fall is. Now this year I can get even and send clippings to her from our newspaper. Hee! Hee!

In the same vane as silpat is parchment paper. Great for cookies, cakes and brownies and yes no cleanup when you are done. My kind of cooking!

The scrubbing bubbles shower cleaner which actually works, I must admit I was a sceptic, but I hate cleaning and scrubbing grout just sucks so now I don't have too.

An additional cat tree for the threesome. Furniture is no longer an object of affection. :)

Now if it would only warm up a hair.

I finally found someone who would rebuild my carbeurator for my 20+ little car. There it sat for almost a year.... People said "why don't you just junk it?" But I love my little car and it still looks very nice. The engine is in good shape, I didn't want to give up on it. Now its happy again and runs great. I drive it all over. People say " You never see these anymore" to me all the time. Just because it isn't a 'classic' everybody thinks I should have dumped it. Maybe that's why you don't see them around anymore.

All the flower catalogues that I get in the mail this time of year always make me so happy. My dogs - Pickle, Pookie and Tiger - make me happy too. Oh, and watching movies on my iPod makes my long daily train ride enjoyable and this makes me, you guessed it, happy.
