I could have done without the 'hmms' and 'uhhuhs'

Have had a problem with cloudy vision in my right eye for I suppose a week. Almost like cataracts but this covered the entire eye. I frankly was afraid to go to the opthmalogist because of thinking it would be bad news. I had cataract surgery possibly 18 or 20 years ago and had never heard of them returning. Finally went to the eye doctor yesterday and after peerng through a myriad of machines and having an ocean of drops in my eye and lots of "hmms" and "uhhuhs" he said I have to write some notes, It seemed that he wrote enough for a novel and I was getting more and more concerned when he turned and said "the membrane behind the implant and just in front of the vitreous sac has become occluded to the point that you may have only about 40% vision in that eye." He paused and then said "fortunately, I can repair that right here in the office with the laser and we can do it in the next 5 minutes. There is a small risk of retinal detachment and an even smaller risk of infection but what do you want to do?" That was a no brainer. It took all of 5 minutes and I counted 15 clicks of the laser, it looked like a flashlight mounted on spindly legs. For the rest of yesterday I couldn't see much of anything but waking up this A.M. everything was wonderfully clear maybe for the first time in months. What a relief, I have to wonder if the "hmms" and "uhhuhs" were for dramatic effect. I'm quite a happy person this morning.

I can't imagine cloudy vision clearing up overnight. You are probably kicking yourself for not having had it done sooner and that being said,I can understand. Glad you are a happy camper today George. Bet it was great seeing Leone clear as ice this morning.

Glad it was a minor glitch and not a big problem, the "sound effects" probably produced anxiety, but remember, it's never something to worry about unless the Doctor says "oops" during a procedure.

We just moved in this month. I removed the fake jennaire cooktop and micro/wall oven combo. Installed a nice gas range and 600 cfm ducted hood. A clean smelling home is important and I hate lingering food odors. We removed the Formica counters held together with scotch tape. Did oiled butcher block on the island where the cooktop had been. Did porcelain tile, which I had and loved in previous kitchen, for perimeter counters with new sink and faucet. We are keeping the oak cabinets oak, as they are high quality. I added new stainless pulls. I will be painting the trim and the doors to the room all in white. I will eventually paint the island cabinets a washed black/gray color. Goal is to be done for thanksgiving. So to me, a good gas stove, good hood, and functional counters and a deep sink are what I think is important to make a kitchen a pleasure to use.

A phone is a small part of my life and one utility I find much more expendible than the others. I always tell people if they want to talk to me, first don't block your number because it'll be automatically rejected; and second if I don't answer, LEAVE A MESSAGE! If you're too good to leave a message then clearly you don't want to talk to me very badly and no, I'm not running in from the mailbox because you chose to grace me with a call at an inconvenient time. A friend called the other night and said he had called before. I said I knew that - I saw it on the CID. He asked if he left a message and I said no you didn't. I had to laugh because he paused for a second and said "that was really kind of stupid wasn't it!" I just said, welllllll, yeah.... I didn't tell him that I had picked up the phone, put on the headset and flipped the phone on but he wasn't on the line then. If it's that many calls, I think I'd answer one and find out. I sometimes pick up the phone but don't say anything to see what kind of response I get. But seldom answer hidden numbers. Have been getting a few calls lately with fake numbers. 555-4444. Yeah right. Add it to the block list.

Xentar, yes I will definitely be doing some vertical gardening, in fact, at the northenmost end of the garden, right past the patio area, I'm going to put up 6 ft high trellises of beans and cucumbers to shade the patio, which is in full sun all day, which really makes it hard to enjoy. The sun comes from the South, so that tall trellis won't shade anything important. I'll have other trellises against the wall that gets all the afternoon sun, probably beans, since they do well with less direct sunlight. I can plant pole beans with bush beans at the bottom in 2 feet of space. That's a lot of beans! I'm also going to trellis tomatoes and squash to save space. I trellised tomatoes all the time in SC -- just put up a strip of hog wire and tied them right up. They did so well like that, and I was able to grow a lot of radishes in front of them. In the summer, I'll replace the cucumbers and beans with malabar spinach and lima beans, or I may grow sweet potatoes and trellis their vines to use the leaves too. I've seen people do that on YouTube. On the shady west side, I'm thinking of putting up those PVC growing towers for lettuce, if I can get someone to help me build them. I want to eventually plant berries on the sunny wall, but that's a future dream. Of course, none of this will be started until fall, because I have too much to do until then to get things ready. My courtyard is a disaster right now, and I don't have time to do anything about it, so I'll be torturing myself this summer trying to get it done.

I feel for you! It's amazing how quickly the vision improves after the teensy holes are cut in the membrane. Both of my eyes did the same thing. It took over 120 clicks for each eye to cut all the little holes. I got to tell you that after about 50 clicks I was fit to be tied. After 120, my nerves were shot for days. And that was just the first eye. I almost had to be dragged in to do the second. That was about 3-4 years ago and no problem since. I am sure that it's going to do well for you too.

I've had cataract surgery on each of my eyes and the surgeon did tell me that sometimes cloudiness can occur and that, just as George said, a fast zap and it's gone.

Cataract surgery now is easier and faster than having your teeth cleaned.

George, I guess one might say you have more insight now:-)

Sorry you had to go through all the suspence but it was great to be fixed so quickly. I'll be looking to catarac surgery in another year or so,i've been told.
Glad you all seem so calm about the surgery. I've been dreading it already.Now i feel better.

It's wonderful what they can do with laser surgery on your eyes these days. I remember when my ex-FIL had to have cataract surgery in the 1960's. He was in the hospital for weeks with his head immobilized & was told if he moved his head he could go blind. Now it's minutes in the doctor's office & you go home seeing 100% better. For those kind of advances, I'll take a few "hmms" and "ahs."

Oakleif, don't dread it instead embrace it. It was a simply amazingly good experience for me - only downside is when you see those wrinkles that have come along since the last time you had really good eyesight:-) You might also notice dust bunnies you didn't know you had.

Look forward to this with confidence and truly without fear.

Im glad to see their was an easy fix to your problems this time. Not like the fiasco with the hand surgery.

Gandle, I'm so happy for you for the ease with which this was fixed. It must seem such a welcome relief!

I get to drive Steve to Milwaukee for "do overs" on his Lasik today. Three months ago they tried to do both his eyes. Though he should have known better, Steve forgot to tell the doc that anesthesia wears off freakishly quickly on him. By the time they got to his second eye, it was no longer numb, he felt the laser and he actually popped his eye out of the harness, resulting in an improper cut. The doc prescribed Valium this time, he's going to give him a higher dose of anesthesia, and I hope this is the last time I have to chauffeur him to this surgery! The thought of another mistake terrifies me...
