Color Without Commitment
Color…do you fill your home with it or does your taste run toward a more neutral palette? Color preference is so very personal. While one person may adore lots of bright, cheerful color in their home, another may feel neutral is absolutely the only way to go.
Years ago, when shopping for upholstered pieces for my home (sofa and chairs) I stayed confused. In some of the home furnishing stores where we shopped, the sales person told us jewel tones were totally out…no one was using them anymore. In other stores we found showrooms full of sofas and chairs covered in fabrics with rich reds, greens and blues. Ummm, what to think?
It was during this time that I became aware, in the décor world colors were supposed to have a shelf life. But what if your budget doesn’t allow for buying new furniture every few years? Or what if you’d like to change out the colors and “feel” of your home with the changing of the seasons? It is possible with just a little planning…these rooms are wonderful examples of just how it can be done.

The red accessories make such a striking statement in this kitchen, but by just changing out the red glassware and canisters, a whole new look could be achieved. This would be a fun area to decorate for the changing of the holidays or seasons.
With a new coat of paint, new fabric for the bench cushion/pillows and a new tea kettle, this kitchen could become a chameleon in the blink of an eye.
The overall scheme of this home office is neutral with just a few punches of color. It would be super easy to go all neutral or to completely change the color scheme.
What grabs your eye when you view this room? Is it the bright blue sofa? A large piece of upholstered furniture is definitely more of a color commitment, but for most sofas a slip cover can easily change all that. If you're worried about tiring of a particular color, a safer way to go would be with a white or neutral fabric on the sofa and get your color fix via the pillows and accessories.
Here again, we see the color blue creating a dramatic look in an otherwise neutral decor. This room would be so easy to change up if a change were desired. A colorful throw across the chair/ottoman or some additional patterned pillows on the bed and the room would take on a whole new look.
Talk about an easy room to change out the color scheme...just buy a new robe and you're done. :)
Even small punches of color can create lovely focal points in a room. I could see a collection of amber or red glass atop this piece come fall/winter. Again...no big commitment for a whole new color look.
Great laundry room! Love the punches of red...don't change a thing. :) But if you really wanted to...you could paint the M and probably the sink base, too.
New chair and new lamp = new look...easy as lemon chiffon pie.
Again...new lamp, new linens...whole new look.
Take a look at how yellow has been used in this room. This would be a cheerful spot to come to on a dreary winter day. Also, it wouldn't be that hard to change the look of this room if desired. Change the book covers, swap the chair for another one and change the wallpapered panels for a a whole new room.
This door would be fun to play with periodically. Any paint color you might dream up would make for a whole new look in this entry.
The green walls add so much drama to this large bathroom. For just the cost of a gallon of paint and a couple of yards of fabric, this room could take on a completely different look.
I love this space! I find that my eye starts at counter level and is drawn upward past the yellow lemons to the bright red flowers. This is a wonderful look for spring and summer, isn't it? Come fall, what would you change if you wanted to warm it up a bit? I'll wait while you ponder that. :)
What did you decide? Would you change the aqua glassware out for bowls in amber or autumn colors? Maybe small pumpkins in place of the lemons for fall? How about limes or pomegranates in the jar for winter? With this neutral backdrop, the sky is the limit in this beautiful kitchen.
