Is there some way your phone company could give you the number? Sounds like either a telemarker or someone who is trying to get ahold of you, relative, collection agency looking for someone with a name similar to yours, or just playing jokes. Talk to your phone company.

Answer it and see if it is just a wrong number. Mine is unlisted, but I still answer. I answered one that was a guy calling for "julie". I told him, there was no one by that name living here. He was irritated and said but she gave me this number herself. I said "you were probably in a club or bar and she gave you a bunch of numbers". He was quiet for a minute and said, "you are probably right". Poor guy. Right after I got the unlisted number I have now, I got calls from bill collectors wanting so and so and they would not believe me when I told them they don't live here. Third call I ask for the manager and I never got another call. No telling how long that would have gone on if I had not answered and got it stopped. I just can't not answer a phone. It could be an out of town relative that didn't bring my phone number besides, I am to curious to let it ring.

Sorry I forgot about the point of this post. I also could do without a phone if it wasn't for emergency calls. I will do away with my land line one day. My cell phone is less than $10 a month.

I just got hung up on by a telemarketer. She asked for Scott. I asked what it was regarding. She slammed the phone down in my ear! LOL

"If a woman answers, hang up." LOL

I have a deep seated dislike for phone talk! I use a phone as a tool for business, emergency and quick communications. Long drawn out chats are not my thing but I do need the phone. I really dislike having the cell phone but it is now a necessity for business CARP!

stargazzer just a quick question for you! Your quote "It could be an out of town relative that didn't bring my phone number" if the out of town relative didn't bring your phone # HOW would they be calling your phone?
I realize sometimes I am easily confused but after several readings this still didn't make sense to me.

If I get a call from an unavailable number, I don't answer. I give my number to very few people. I too, don't like to talk on the phone a lot, especially if I am out and busy or with other people. I use it for quick calls.

I would do with out my home phone if I had another way to get online. I have my cell phone and use it all the time. That is just about the only way my 3 daughters and I talk to each other. My cell phone only costs me $10 a month since I am with one of the kids plans. I like to use the phone, email and write letters.

There IS another way to get online. It's called an air card.

Angelaid -- we had a similar problem with calls where no one would say anything - they'd just hang up when the answering machine came on. Because our phone is one that has several built-in voice mail "boxes," I just assigned those calls to a particular mailbox and recorded the following greeting for it: "Albert Einstein defined 'insanity' as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. We're not going to answer your calls, so unless you're ready to admit that you're certifiable, you might as well quit calling." After about a half dozen more calls, they quit.

A phone is a small part of my life and one utility I find much more expendible than the others.

I always tell people if they want to talk to me, first don't block your number because it'll be automatically rejected; and second if I don't answer, LEAVE A MESSAGE! If you're too good to leave a message then clearly you don't want to talk to me very badly and no, I'm not running in from the mailbox because you chose to grace me with a call at an inconvenient time.

A friend called the other night and said he had called before. I said I knew that - I saw it on the CID. He asked if he left a message and I said no you didn't. I had to laugh because he paused for a second and said "that was really kind of stupid wasn't it!" I just said, welllllll, yeah.... I didn't tell him that I had picked up the phone, put on the headset and flipped the phone on but he wasn't on the line then.
If it's that many calls, I think I'd answer one and find out. I sometimes pick up the phone but don't say anything to see what kind of response I get. But seldom answer hidden numbers. Have been getting a few calls lately with fake numbers. 555-4444. Yeah right. Add it to the block list.

I've never had a cell phone and don't guess I ever will.

My land line seldom rings, maybe an average of 3 times a month.

I'll never forget when answering machines were new and I took complete advantage of that after answering the phone at work any where from 30 to 70 calls a day.

I felt guilty for having my children 'lie' to those who did call cause I was sooooo sick and tired of being on the phone so much. It's hard to make your young children understand the difference between telling a 'white lie' and otherwise...if you know what I mean. :)

I still don't want or need to pay for caller ID, so I tell my family and close friends to just talk to my answering machine long enough to give me time to get to the phone once I recognize the voice.

I'm still surprised to find out how many folks refuse to talk to an answering machine...if only briefly.

I wouldn't be without my landline, and even though I am on the "do not call list" as are many others, we all are getting telemarketer calls. It does no good to report those numbers which many of us have done, as nothing is being done about them. Luckily I have caller ID and I can choose to "block" those numbers, but I now keep a whistle by two of the phones and just give a sharp blast. If you have caller ID you can google the number or go to whocalledme dot com and find out who is calling you.

I also would love to do away with the phone, we just don't use it that often....Just last night, we had a call and the ID came up unidentified so I didn't pick it up...Well, it just happen to be a member of congress and went on to leave a message and it was all computorized...This really irked me, I know they don't have to abide by the no call, but if they're calling why so sneaky and not have their number show up....I sent him an e-mail and today, got a response, saying they can't respond to my message and gave a lame reason...So I sent him another one.... Grrrr

We haven't had a land line in years. We each have a cell and you sure don't miss any calls that way b/c we always have our cells with us. I often don't answer calls that I don't recognize.

CID is one of my favorite things. I don't answer if the caller does not identify themselves. Or, if they are persistent, I pick up and disconnect immediately, just to irritate them.

I think having a phone in my home is for my convenience, not whoever is calling me. I don't feel compelled to answer just because it rings. There are only a few people (my older sister and a disabled neighbor) that I will always answer their calls. Anyone else, it may depend on what I'm doing at the time.

the only time I use the telephone is to make appointments or phone for pick up. and one local bookstore phones me to let me know my magazine is in.

I am recieving right now tons of telemarketers and do not like it at all.
