new lawn, how to apply weed b gone

so i mowed my newly seeded lawn 2 times and will be doing 3rd mowing in next couple of days. since it was spring seeding i have some weeds that i need to get rid of. i read here that after third mowing i could apply selective herbicide. so i got weed b gone, but not sure how to apply. going over 5000sf lawn with the spray that comes with it seems like not a very good idea. is there other way to do it? also i havent fertilized since i applied starter fertilizer. my soil was kind of low on N at the beginning. what and when should i apply. should i fertilize first or weed be gone first? how much time between those two applications? does it even matter?

Weed B Gon would be fine to apply after the 3 mowing of your new grass. If you bought the version of the product that attaches to the end of your garden hose (a Ready Spray) then that product should be used only with that applicator. If you try to dilute it yourself, you may end up overapplying. Just spray enough to go over the lawn one time, and do not saturate the grass.

Starter Fertilizer has a 4-6 week residual. If it has been that long since your last application it would help the grass to reapply the Starter Fertilizer. It can be used in conjunction with the weed b gon. I would apply the products 1 day appart since the Weed B Gon should be on the grass for 24 hours without rain or water and the Starter Fertilizer does need to be watered in.

my weed b gone came with the hand pump, the spread is minimal that is reason i am asking. i guess i will look for something that could be attached to the hose.

The good news is that with those temps it would be ok to spray. The bad news is, like bp states, you would have to wait a few weeks after spraying before seeding. Instead of spraying the whole lawn, why not just spray the areas with weeds and seed the bare areas?

Crabgrass is an annual and it will die with the first hard frost anyway, so let that guide your decision. If you're not going to overseed in the heavily infested areas, I don't see the point in killing something that will die in six weeks on its own. You're right in asking if preemergent next spring is the solution to your problem. Yes, it is. That said, there are other uses for weed killer in the fall. September and October are the best times to control winter weeds (annual weeds that germinate in the fall and flower in the spring, e.g. henbit) and perennial broadleaf weeds like dandelions.

I recall that it only needs 1 hr before it is rain ready so one day should be fine. I spot sprayed one weekend, left it a week then re sprayed. After 2-3 weeks everything was gone in my entire lawn so it works just give it at least a week then re spray.

Hi tye!! How'r things? I did buy the dye that you use. Would that be tye-dye? I got the blue one. In fact, I just put down prodiamine for premerg a few hours ago and tried the dye. It does help but was not like night and day. The problem is that I have to walk so fast with my 2 gal sprayer that there isn't enough liquid going down to see. At least when we're talking about premerg and I have to cover 2000 sf with a 2 gal bottle in two directions. I was able to see blue spots on the occasional leaf and that helped guide me. It worked last fall very well for spot spraying. I say not to obsess over which kind and how much surfactant. I don't think it matters that much. Just add some to the Weed B Gone and let er rip. However, you need to wait until weeds are actually growing for it to be effective. If you are anxious to do something I suppose you could mix up a small test sample and spray a few weeds.

I would just spot spray the weeds you have coming up with the spray, doesnt make sense to do the whole new lawn, unless of course you have weeds all over?

Also, make sure you don't use it if the high temperature is going to be above 85F (I err on the side of caution and keep it below 80).

i have weeds scattered all over so i think hose spraying would make more sense. i already got ready spray form home depot. i am planing on spraying in the evening as the day temps here are over 80 every day now.

If the daily highs are over 80, you're pushing your luck spraying. If the highs are above 85, you'll probably damage bushes, trees, roses, etc. even if you spray in the evening. The chemicals in the spray will volatize once it gets hot.
