I just moved.. went from 1.2 acres, 1 gallon per mow to a hosue with 7k sq feet.... gas consumption just got lowered.

So the answer is no.... I am loving a smaller yard. I figure I am saving about 12 dollars a month in gas.

No and I can use a people-powered reel mower if necessary.

Several years ago I went with a battery powered mower. I don't miss all that maintenance at all.

Since I am in the rural, have about 3 acres more or less, and several 'areas' I may mow some of them a little less frequently. Up the road, out by the road, around the garden, and out on the corner may get it a little less often. I've also thought about all the additional time spent keeping them mowed as frequently as I have b4.

I'm seriously thinking about a new mower with a bigger engine, and wider cut, to cut time as well...since I've had mower problems this week.

Now's as good a time as any to consider returning unused land to natural habitat. You can do this simply by not mowing and let mother nature take its course or you can jump start things by determining what was growing on your land before it was cleared for development or farm and plant those plants. Rather than go get a bigger more expensive mower and stay in this cycle of perpetual senseless mowing of acres and acres the land could be used for another purpose that doesn't require maintenance.

And throw in some beautiful wildflowers

I'm with dchall, I bought a used Black & Decker 24-volt mower last year. It's nice not having to deal with gas, oil, filters, plugs, etc.. I do think the cost of replacement batteries will negate any gas savings at some point, unless gas keeps going up, up, and away.

nope, have been using a reel mower most of the time. Great exercise and I can have a sip of port while mowing too.

I'm w/ the other 24 volt group. I bought the B&D 5 yrs ago, same batteries, tho they're not what they used to be. I just mow in 2 charges now.
The batteries are $125 for the pair at dealers, but can be bought online for $35 each ($70 pair)

Nope, Myrtle is electric/battery. Granted, her batteries need replacement every three years, but that's still cheaper than gas.

My JD x300 is better on gas than my old Poulin. I can mow for 3 -4 hours on a 3.5 gallon tank.

Anyway, I won't change my mowing habits, but I wish I could change my commute, that's where it is hurting me, 160 miles round trip everyday to work. Costing me about $20 a day ($450 month) to go to work now. And what's worse is we will soon be reading about more record profits from the oil companies. Yeah, that's fair business.

I don't plan on changing my habits. I've got an old craftsman with no bells and whistles and a small suburban lot. I probably use less than 1/2 gallon a week, so the gas price doesn't matter much.

All I can tell you is this... Last year, I decided to mow with my riding mower between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle for the engine speed and my gas usage got cut in half, so if you're cutting at full throttle, you might want to cut back a bit.

My neighbor, who has the same identical mower and size lot refuses to cut back on the throttle and he eats through gas.. It cracks me up when he's gotta make a gas run while I sit back and am finished my lawn before he even starts. Even when he has a full tank, it's not like he gets done any faster because he doesn't mow at full throttle speed for a better cut.
