Floof: My new,odd habit.....and yours????

So I have recently been approaching grocery shopping a different way. I dont know why, I dont dislike grocery shopping. I work (usually) 4 12 hour shifts a week, 5pm-5am. Then I am supposed to be off 4 days. I have found myself more and more resistant to using my days off to go grocery shopping. I always stop SOMEWHERE on my way to work. Usually a grocery store to get diet soda and either something to cook at work or something ready made. So i just started to pick up a few extra things that i need at home too. There is a full size fridge here, shared by 5 people, its always clean and has plenty of room so i can keep the perishables in there until i go home every morning. My coworker told me that its weird. It may be, but so am I. I find it convienient, as its a 30 minute drive into town to shop. Since I have to drive that far into work, and pass several stores anyway, it makes sense to me. And by the time my off days start, my house is fully stocked.

I guess I could use Wal Marts new pickup service, but i would lose out on all the cash back i get on the Ibotta app. And i COULD just trudge into town on one of my days off, and spend an hour or two grocery shopping and at least getting some steps on my Fitbit. But this works for now. Tonight, on my way in, I picked up my cherry coke zero and a rotisserie chicken with a bag of salad for work, and for home: a loaf of SOs favorite Brioche bread, since there are only 2 slices left in the house, his Mountain Dew, bacon (used the last this morning-can't be without that) tuna, and paper towels.

Any "weird" routines you care to share?

I think that's a great idea. So, you don't have to make a separate trip. I love it.

And now I've got to go google what an Ibotta app is.....

When gasoline first got super expensive about three or four years ago, I started plotting my errands geographically so that I could get the most accomplished with the least amount of miles. I think your shopping strategy is smart, not weird.

Mrs. S, Ibotta is a great app! They have different products with cash back. You select the store you shopped at, and which products you bought, and to redeem, you take a picture of your receipt. Or, in the case of the Wal Mart ones, scan the little box thing at the bottom of the receipt. It puts it in your account, and when you get $20 you can cash it out to your paypal account. I've been using it since January and have $98 dollars. Not a fortune but ill take it!!! My sister has around $300 since January (granted shes got a husband and 6 kids, but still.....) I plan to let it build up until Christmas time, and cash it out then.

I also use Fetch Rewards. You just take a picture of your grocery receipt, and if you buy certain brands, you get points. Even if you didnt buy any of the brands they offer points for, they usually give you points just for scanning your receipt. The points can be used for online gift cards. I always get amazon ones.

I also like the Wal-Mart Savings Catcher app.

I think what you are doing is great. I too used to shop sometimes on my lunch hour. My office was about 3 minutes from a Super Target, and while it wasn’t my usual grocery store, I could pick up paper and cleaning products, sale items, some things for meals, and put the perishables in our large refrigerator at work.

Now that I am retired, I probably have a bunch of odd habits like still getting up early and going for a run.

I love to grocery shop. I used to go every day.

My husband has had my truck for several weeks now....he was getting his boat ready to go shrimping. Finally, it is ready....after a few break downs, but he has only been out two days. So, he has been picking up my horse feed and hay and going to the store for me. He doesn't know how to shop....and I hate having to depend on him, but at the same time....I really like staying home and the more I stay here, the more I like it. Too, I have so much to do that once I get started, I don't like to stop. I am working on cleaning out a really filthy storage building that filled up with water during the flood and everything floated into a huge pile, covered with silt and debris. My husband has asbestosis, and has a hard time breathing as it is, and I don't really want him helping in there, except when I have to have help picking up and moving something that is heavy.

Anyway....didn't mean to get off topic....but my weird habit...which doesn't seem weird to me, but may to other people, is I carry my phone around and listen to youtube while I work. Or I listen to the radio on Iheart App. I listen to a radio program every morning from 8 to 11. He comes back on from 5 to 7, and I listen to that one too. Sometimes on a pocket radio and sometimes on my phone. I also listen to podcasts on the Stitcher App. My favorite one was S Town, which stands for Sh*t Town. I like to have something to listen to while I work or even when I am in the house and am on the computer. I don't have very much interest in television.

Marilyn, I carry my phone around and listen to Christmas music year round on the I heart radio app when I'm cleaning or gardening. People call me weird for that too. I don't know if it's because I carry it around or if it's because it's Christmas music all year. (Though I have an idea ;op) i also have a Bluetooth shower speaker and listen to old Nigella Lawson cooking shows on YouTube while I'm showering. Or barefoot contessa. Or the two fat ladies. Or Christmas music.

Amy .....you are weird! I like that in a person! I listen to cooking shows on youtube or to people that give tips on selling on ebay or interviews with David Paulides, who wrote several books on people who have disappeared in state parks....like little children, who, if they are found, are found many miles away or so high up in the mountains that there is no conceivable way they could have gone so far by themselves. David Paulides

I also follow several people on youtube....like Emilia Fart. I don't know why. She is beyond weird but I sort of like her. Emilia Fart

Some of the others I follow aren't as weird as Emilia, but they do cooking videos and some of them go to thrift shops and yard sales. Since I already have more junk than any 50 people need....I live vicariously through them....like to see what they find.

Hey, Marilyn, I listened to S***town, too, and then was so sad it had an end. but then I discovered Dirty John. For anyone who hasn't heard it, do yourself a favor and DON'T GOOGLE IT. Just listen from the beginning, and be carried along. I, uh, never got anything much done that day, listened to it pretty much straight through. Crikey!

Not a new habit, but definitely quirky. I am a list maker; they help me stay on top of what needs to be done and crossing things off gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I usually have 2 -3 lists going at a time; one for household chores, one for errands that need to be run and a shopping list. Not so odd yet, right?

But, there are a few rules about my lists.

    1. They have to be in my handwriting. If hubby adds something to one of my lists, I have to start a new list. He now knows to tell me whatever needs to be added so I can add it in my handwriting.

    2. The same pen has to be used when adding something to the list. If I start the list in black ink and accidentally grab a pen with blue ink, I have to start a new list because I don't like different colors of ink on my list or even different flows of ink.

    3. If the paper the lists are written on get wrinkled, folded or stained, I have to start a new list. The paper must remain pristine.

    4. If I know that I am getting things done, but nothing is getting crossed off the list, I add all of the things I have done to the list and then cross them all off.

Every Sunday, I start a new list for the upcoming week and transfer anything that didn't get done the previous week to the list as well as add new tasks that need to be done.

    Don't mess with my lists!

Oh gosh.....don't get me started on lists!! I am a compulsive list maker. In fact, I have an entire tablet that I devote only to lists. I have grocery shopping lists, personal shopping lists, nursery/garden center shopping lists, miscellaneous shopping lists, project lists (both indoors and out), general 'to-do' lists and assorted business reminder lists (in addition to my datebook/scheduler). I probably have at least a half dozen different lists going at one time....often more :-)) And I update them regularly, crossing things off when completed or adding something new. And when one page is full I start over again.

Lists are crucial to my life function :-) Not sure I can manage without them.

Dawn I'm laughing...seriously laughing. I expecially love #4. Its sounds very OCD. Lol. Reminds me of stirring my coffee. I'm up to 150 stirs per cup. 30 stirs for each of my family members. I KNOW this is OCD at its richest. Now if I mess up and stir one time to many EVERYONES 30 stirs go up by that number. Pretty soon a cup of coffee won't be worth it. Maybe I should switch to black and forget the cream. Course others will say forget the stir...but...omg everything will fall apart if I did that. HAHA. Don't ask what would happen if I folded a pair of underwear or any clothing inside out. LOL.

No I don't think its gone farther than these two things but maybe I'm in denial.

    Ha, Ha, Mama!

Hubby folded the towels last week and it took everything I had not to refold them. But, I survived the week and now the towels have been used and I don't have to look at them anymore!

Yea, my family/friends all know how it is with the lists and they all go along with my odd little habit. Your coffee must be cold by the time you finally get to drink it! :-)

I only write in black ink for anything. I will not tolerate blue ink. If DH has one in the house, I go all Mommy Dearest on him just like "no wire hangers"!

My shopping lists are on card stock so I can prop it up in the cart. It is divided into sections: produce, meats, dairy, g.m., pharmacy etc. DH goes nowhere near the list. I always print them neatly, using upper and lower case letters as needed.

I cannot stand a towel folded so that any hem is showing when it is on the shelf. They must all be the exact same width.

I'm an anti-list maker. If it's worth doing, it's worth remembering. I sometimes will jot things down on the Keep app on my phone (especially ideas or suggestions I hear from others) , and always put events and reminders on my e-calendar. But no lists. The risk of forgetting something is worth it, it allows me to avoid the annoyance of making a list.

When I go grocery shopping, what my wife wants me to buy is on a list she gives me and what I want to buy is on a list in my head.

I am a list maker....and I understand the satisfaction of crossing things off your list. My husband has been using my truck for several weeks....so I am home, 15 miles from town. I am running out of everything. So last night, I made an impromptu run to town to get some necessities. I didn't take a list. Usually writing something down is all I need because once I write it and read it, I will usually remember it....but I didn't do that and I forgot several items I really needed to get. So tonight....it is back to town.

List maker here, although not as OCD as some. I also add things that I've done so I can cross them off. Dawn, doesn't crossing them off make your list all messy?

I have a list app on my phone for groceries, and an eternal to-do list on a spreadsheet. It has several areas, one for large projects, one for errands/chores, and one for the specific items I need/want to accomplish this week. I don't delete them when they're done, I change the background color of the block they're in. On the weekend, I delete finished items and start next week's list.

I created a template to print out for creating my shopping list. It has 3 sections for my 3 usual stores. There are colored boxes to represent each department. It is lined. There is a rectangular space at the bottom to list other stops/errands I have to do. I keep a running list on a notepad of things I am running low on and they are the first items entered.

We list makers are an odd bunch, aren't we?? I actually color code my grocery list with different highlighters to know what I want to purchase at what store. I prefer the meat and produce and specialty items available at one but get most of my bakery goods and staples at another and pet food (a house brand) and treats at yet another.

But I am not very precise about crossing things off. Sometimes a wavy line or scribble; sometimes just a dash through the word. And I circle items that I didn't get or get to (for whatever reason) so I remember to add them to the next list :-)) And sometimes I 'star' things so so they have more of a priority in my head.

skibby, if I made my lists on a perforated pad, I would do that exact same thing. It would end up being rule #5! But, I write my lists on paper that has stuff on it that either one of us printed by mistake or the printer messed it up somehow or we printed two of the same thing, etc. That scrap paper has been cut and measured very precisely using a paper cutter. One piece of 8.5 x 11 inch paper yields two 4.25 x 5.5 sheets of notepaper or four 2 x 2.75 sheets of notepaper. Yes, the 2 inches isn't exact because I start out with 8.5 which doesn't divide well by 2, but I cut the little bit extra off so that I end up with 2 inches. Plus, I'm recycling scrap paper that otherwise would have been thrown away, so win - win!

aok, I get your point about crossing things off making the list messy, but that is an accepted part of list keeping. Crossing off is such a form of gratification and accomplishment, that I can overlook that bit of messiness. Plus, on Sunday when I start a new list, it feels really good to toss that messy old list with all the cross outs.

However, I think mamaP is onto something. I like her idea about using a ruler to cross things off and think I will implement that on Sunday. No more messy cross offs!

Yep, we list keepers are a bit odd, but I like to think that we are really organized and good planners. It is nice to know that there are others out there though. :-)

The list! Lately DH has been doing the grocery shopping because I've been really busy at work. Normally I would shop and he would carry in and put everything up. We cannot shop together because he insists on pushing the cart and he goes through the store all crazy (which means differently than I go through the store). I think he hates the list I give him because it is organized by the order in which you will find the item, if you go the normal non-crazy route. I am sure it takes him twice as long as it should. Bonus: that man does not buy anything not on the list. Grocery bill has gone down. :)

Now that I'm living where supermarkets are 35 minutes or more away, I keep a list on my phone, and it is easy to cross things off that way. I try to make my trips into town to be more than just the grocery now, too.

Back when I was working, I'd shop on the way home, seldom any list, just impulse shop. I had that leeway then -- I passed all those thing traversing back. And if I needed or wanted something on a weekend, nothing reasonably essential was further than 15 minutes away.

The only online flyer I ever bothered reading was for Stew Leonard's (a local grocery chain), simply because it was better organized than the regular supermarket ones. A simple list of specials, no blaring ads or blinking ones either.

I prefer to get to groceries or any other store when they first open (unless it was back when I was driving home from work), because I'm not a fan of crowds.

"Odd" is in the mind of the beholder. I seldom write down grocery lists anymore. I use my digital notetaker that's always in my pocket. If I notice I need something, I record a note. Every few days to a week I generally transfer those notes to the computer and condense, then make a store list and record it so when I'm out and about and decide to stop at a store I just go to the recording and have my list. I also tend to go to the store a lot more often than I used to. Gets me out and about and I don't hate it as I used to when I did the monthly or bi-monthly shopping marathons. I still plan my trips so they're the shortest and use the least gas.

All you list-makers are making my head spin with all your rules! Haha.

When I’m driving and I stop and turn off the car, I always roll the front windows down an inch. Whether at the store, inside the garage, at work, wherever. Winter or summer.

I always arrange the folding money in my wallet with ones in front, then fives, and on the rare occasion I have larger bills, after that. All face up, of course.

When I physically turn my body to go a different direction, I almost always turn to the left. Even if I plan to walk toward the right.

Right foot first when climbing stairs.

The bed has to be made before I get in it. The sheet and blanket and coverlet must be perfectly straight and smooth. When son and DIL stay with us and she makes the bed, I have to force myself not to remake it to straighten everything so I don’t hurt her feelings.

Glasses, cups, etc are open-end down when put away. But bowls and plates are the opposite.

Hanging towels have to be straight with side edges folded under.

I am quite disorganized about shopping and lists. Sure I make a list on any cleanish paper that I can find (could be back of an envelope or printer test page or just wrinkled printer paper) but always miss the first and last item on the list, even when I underline or circle the item. My eyes just don't see the top or bottom. I shop when I am out running other errands. I used to shop on my way home from work, but have been work from home for several years now. Sometimes I don't leave the house for 2 weeks. I HATE marathon shopping and much prefer frequent stops for a few items. Yes spoiled by living close to our grocer.
