"Carl, I want you to kill all the Gophers!" I feel like Bill Murray in "Caddyshack"!

How do I get rid of all these pesty rodents? I have only seen two dirt piles but my lawn as spongy areas throughout half of my lawn.

Anyone? Anyone?

When we used to live out on the prairie I had an awful time keeping them at bay. Chemical warfare is the sure fire method but I wouldn't do that fearing other animals or the hawks etc getting poisoned from eating poisoned dead gophers. I had to resort to various methods, each somewhat successful... shooting them (which is most country folks preferred method) but you never get them all. Drowning or gassing them is probably the best way if you're in a city type or residential country area..

First off the always have at least one or two exit holes so you have to locate those and fill them in good with dirt. Get the garden hose, stick it down the hole you see them using and wait and watch, helps to have a partner with the watching just in case they pop out somewhere else.

Gassing is much the same,, just get some flexible exhaust tubing you can stick onto the exhaust of your car/truck and stick the other end down the gopher hole.. making sure the other holes are plugged with dirt.. let the vehicle run about 10 minutes then cover the hole up.. In both methods, check the holes the next day and see if they've been uncovered in which case you missed them and have to try again..

Those "gopher bombs" you see for sale at HD etc... hopeless

In a previous place where I lived, I had gopher issues. I tried a few things (except explosives shaped like rabbits), but what worked best for me is poison administered with what is called a gopher tool. It takes a little to figure it out, but it worked for me.
Get rid of gophers completely is elusive. What is usually happening is you live near somewhere (open field, undeveloped area, or you neighbor's yard) where they also live and will cross into your yard. You have to keep at it to control them.

They love regular Ca poppies, eschscholzia californica, that is often how I tell where a new gopher is, when I see a wilted poppy. My theory with some suceptible plants from seeds is to plant extra, so there is enough if they get attacked. When I see damage, I set a trap, the cinch traps work the best for me. When I see a mound, I am usually in the middle of another garden task, but I drop everything and set the traps, because the longer you wait, the harder to find the freshest mound. I have planted many fruit trees and my most prized plants in the bought cages, but it is so much more digging and effort to get those cages in deep and I have read that some people say they stunt plants. I think you have to be very careful to make sure the cage is filled with soil, especially the corners and around the rootball, and underneath. On my to do list is raised beds lined with hardware cloth for veggies.

If protecting hostas you need to determine the mature size (width only) of the plant and figure the root system will likely be twice the size. If a hosta like some I grow are 4’ in diameter, some up to 6’. Others may only be 1’ or 2’ in width. Try to contact a reputable hosta nursery that grows all sizes in a trial borders and ask them about what the mature crown area will be and go out at least 1’ diameter more so they might not be able to reach the crown. But here is the issue, the holes need to be 1/4” or smaller, and they can just go down in the basket and eat away coming and going over the top. I would leave the top of the basket up about 2-3” so they sorta run into it but they can still just go over in. The best thing is to use traps NOT POISONING— it’s inhumane as they can take many hours to several days to die and they cause secondary poisoning to the very critters you need to eat them ie owls, hawks, even blue jays or other predator birds that will eat both fruits, berries and at certain times want protein sources. People forget even chickens (hens and roosters) will take great delight tracking down mice, etc and pulling them apart, fighting amongst themselves eating and chasing. Have personally seen this occur if one is stupid enough to go through the chicken area looking for eggs, grain, etc. 5-6 hens can be formidable predators and a rooster is the same with bigger prey like snakes, etc trying to invade his territory with those spurs. I have been hit with those too. A rooster that attacks people taking care of them ended up making stock and then great chicken and dumplings.

Berndoodle, you struck a nerve. Those darn gophers! I watched a whole chrysanthemum plant vanish before my eyes last week (right before annual bloom season). The gophers just pulled it under in broad daylight. I, like you, have a location where the population is huge in a vast area. I am trying something new this year with my beardeds since I do not have a huge collection yet (maybe never if the gophers continue to invite their family & friends to my place). I will be planting them in clay pots, submerged, rim level to the ground. I am concerned about the hole in the bottom of the pot...don't know if they can sqeeze through. I know the plants won't have a lot of room to spread. I'll just divide them again next year.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay area. Mangoes can be grown here if you're willing to do the work or have a greenhouse. Mine has two strings' worth of old warm Christmas lights, blue (and some green till I get around to replacing those bulbs) rather than white so they don't light up the night (much). Then I put a large frost cover over it at night for all but summertime--two layers' worth if it's actually going to hit freezing so that the leaves don't burn where they touch the fabric. Mangoes need it to stay above 40 to flower and fruit and so far mine has done fine even though we've had it hit 24F several times since I planted it over a year ago.
