Is my yard safe to plant in? Lots of dog feces over the years.
Comments (20)Right on Oil Robb, I was baffled as to how a person on this planet could be unaware that food is grown in manure and has been as long as people have been growing food. I thought everyone had driven within a mile of a crop field and realized it smelled like a cow's primary product. Stating that you grow melons in the lot that is coated with manure was pleasant to read because watermelons evolved in Africa to grow in the wake of the animals that leave them. Watermelons evolved to grow in piles of poop after their seeds traveled through the digestive system of elephants... And it's a pretty common adaptation throughout the plant kingdom. The only down sides to dog poop that I have found are that I have to cut the grass more often, and when I gathered some up to put in the worm bin my dog mistook that action for "don't go there" and now spreads it all over. So now I need to put on shoes when I go outside. On the bright side, pooping dog is now a source of entertainment as I hope for her to go close to the fruit trees so I don't have to buy poop to put on them. Buy poop... Imagine that. Next people are going to start insisting that forest fires are bad for the forests when they are really only bad for the morons that put their houses in forests that depend on wildfires to stay healthy....See MoreAngel Face - before gopher, after gopher (pics)
Comments (30)Kasie - I've tried the traps. I bought 2, and have set them each about 20x. Not one single gopher. I have found the "giant destroyer" brand bombs that seemed to be working, so I'm not giving up on gassing. The putzy red and black ones they've been stocking at HD and Lowes have been useless - I end up digging them up, un detonated. If (when...sigh...) this happens again, I will try to see if I can get rootstock to again produce roots - mostly as an experiment. I've tossed 2 of my losses: Angel Face - WILL replace, Tantalizing Red - will not replace, then Pink Peace had some tiny straggling roots left, and I chopped her down to about the relative size of her remaining roots leaving all the low leaves I could, and replanted her and am soaking her daily. She isn't dead yet... Caged 3 more roses last night after coming home from work - Bolero (missing all but a few feeder roots), Young Lycidas (whoppee - roots intact), and Intrigue (most roots intact). That now makes a total of 8 now caged. Just about 70 something to go. It's a good start. !...See MoreGophers and Ground Squirrels protected in La Habra Heights?
Comments (20)Sunnie, what kind of avocado is it? Mine are Hass, and they have been ready to eat since November. By August they are rancid. Have you picked any to let them ripen? Hass don't ripen on the tree, you have to pick them. If you live in a neighborhood that has possums you will just get new ones if you get rid of the old ones. A large dog is the best defense against too much grazing by possums. Fortunately, they usually don't eat as much as raccoons or squirrels. We have tree and ground squirrels, and the ground squirrels are winning. I put so much water down their tunnels that my California Redwoods are actually green this summer. We have expensive poison stations, traps, cats, and dogs. Our neighbor even got a rat terrier! They have destroyed the lawn, the terraced part of the yard-- it's a nightmare. If I had any guts I'd pour gasoline down the tunnel and blow the whole neighborhood up. Just kidding. Don't call Homeland Security yet. Hey stanofh- I'll bet gophers taste a lot like guinea pig.
