How bad is this thatch?

Lawn doesn't quite have a deep green color to it and you can see a yellowish hue over the green compared to others in neighborhood

First year I'm really starting to pay attention to the lawn (2nd year owning).

Last year we had TruGreen do their 5-6 apps, we were told by the lawn service that the previous owners 'fertilized like crazy' The sprinkler system is set to go 5 days a week and the longest station runs for 20min, others range down to 6 minutes.

I've read over fertilizing and frequent watering can both lead to thatch

So far correcting, I'm doing fertilizer myself of 3 applications, and 1 pre-em application this year, thanks to others on this forum.

Just had sprinklers turned on and I need to figure out each zones rates to get 1 inch and set to weekly

From reading it seems core areation in fall is the best fix for this, but have had mixed reviews on using dethatcher. Something like this http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_07124315000P

Is my thatch bad enough that I need to dethatch it this fall before I aerate?
