How to De-Thatch Floratam?

I live in Central FL near Clearwater. My St.Augustine Floratam is about 5 years old. The first few years I was mowing too low, over watering and over fertilizing (chemically). Which I'm sure is what caused the thatch. About 3 years ago I switched to an organic lawn care approach. Since then, I have been mowing high, watering deep and infrequently and feeding my lawn 4-5 times a year. I was hoping the thatch would go away on its own, but it hasn't.

About the Thach:

The thatch layer is only affecting the back half of my lawn. It is mainly thick stolons/runners and roots intermingled on top of the soil. Roots are actually growing above the soil and rooting into the thatch layer. There is probably 2-3 inches of stolons and roots intermingled above the soil. My mower sink into the turf and scalps the lawn in these areas.

It my understanding that if I Vertical mow St.Augustine (which spreads by above ground stolons/runners) and alot of the stolons are removed/cut the grass may die.

If this is the case, How should I remove or decrease the thatch layer?
