Can you grow new branches on a braided ficus?

I purchased a braided ficus approx. 3 years ago just after moving into a new home. Since we had just moved in a didn't think about repotting until I started having major leaf loss (2 yrs) - the tree was almost bare. I repotted in a larger pot and within 3 months my ficus was getting lots of new leaves. Since then (1 year) the tree has grown out of control but the center never grew new leaves. My questions are:

1. Can you grow new branches towards the middle to fill it in? Or any other suggestions?

2. What and where should I cut back the branches? I have one branch that's much longer than the others. And there's no shape left to the tree.

I don't know too much about plants and ususally only buy kinds that are almost impossible to kill so please speak in layman's terms for a beginner. I can't seem to post any pictures, but I'll try again if it helps to see what I'm talking about.

Thank you for any help on either issue. Donna
