Rooftop and Self-Watering Garden Projects

Hi folks,

I've been busy trying to combine container gardening with rooftop and in-ground growing, while including self-collection / storage of water at minimal cost. I put up 43 pictures of my efforts in a f*aceb@@k album below. I have commentary on most of the pictures to explain what I'm trying to do.

I think out of my efforts so far, I'd like to come up with a module of lightweight sturdy material of 10-20 ft2 that one person could handle pretty easily and would collect / store 10-20 gallons on a pitched roof. My feelings are that the Earthbox / tainer type systems are fine and probably can't be beat for overall production, but they don't go far enough in terms of square footage or collecting and storing water. They could be cheaper too.

I've been using some cheap lumber, 5x5 plastic sheets (flexible), gallon plastic jugs, and plastic tarp. I'm thinking PVC, EPDM, and coroplast would work better, but cost $$. Ideas welcome. Perhaps just a nice raised bed of manageable dimensions would be easier / collect water and recirulate with a solar pump or something.

I'm not real good at hyperlinking , but it appears copy / paste will work .

I also noticed a big article on some of the other local guys doing larger scale (flat) rootop gardening / raised beds.
