I have been given a BAD project!

First off, I know this is a bad idea, explained it, but was still told to do it. To screen a bad view I have to put 3 container plants on top of a building. The containers will be plastic about 2' tall & 28" wide. The containers will sit on a hot rubber roof in the summer and exposed to north winds in the winter. The plants are taxus and arborvatae. I plan on putting plywood underneath to help with the heat. Using soiless mix, rocks on bottom w/ drainage holes. We usually get into single digits at some point in winter. Due to weight I will not be able to move them. I'm thinking once the soil mix freezes the plants will die. Is there anything I can do to help these plants survive?
