Have been given a Bromeliad thatis past prime..how do I renovate?

Hi,

I have this bromeliad that is about12-15inches high with one tired looking red flower bract on it. There were about 12 leaves that were discolored, and some brown shriveled leaves on the lower edge. I pulled the browns, and tried cutting back the discolored, but it's not easy to figure the best way to remove a bad leaf from these plants. Actually very few of the leaves look really great. How much can I cut this back and what would I expect for regrowth?

Also I have no idea what kind of bromeliad it is. Does it make a difference? I have general directions for care, but still feel uncertain about where to place the plant. West window with 2-3 hours of late winter sun, East window with no direct sun, but fairly bright, or somewhere away from a window? Can I mist this plant every day?

thanks,

ADam
