Do you ever have this feeling?
Comments (2)My former neighbor didn't care what his side yard looked like either. I planted St. Augustine plugs along there one year and that grass was so happy over there, it grew right over onto his property and choked out the weeds. Now it looks nice. ;-) I was out pulling a few weeds today too. It was a beautiful day to be in the garden. I also planted a few things that I bought from Shades of Green in Frisco. They had their open house today, so I HAD TO GO. I have to be very careful when I shop there as I ended up buying two 1-gallon plants and two quart size plants and it came to just under $30. But, I just had to have them! Back to the weed pulling . . . My dad always said that if you spend just 20 minutes a day doing it, it doesn't seem like such a big job. It will get done eventually and you'll be less likely to have a sore back after only 20 minutes of pulling....See MoreCare to share? Do you volunteer, or have you ever?
Comments (26)Natesgram, I've worked in a NICU for 15 years and I can't tell you how much we appreciate those fleece blankets for our babies. We also have local volunteers who make isolette covers to keep the environment dark for our babies because it is developmentally appropriate (they shouldn't be born yet). Have you ever seen one? And when my late grandmother was getting chemo for pancreatic cancer, she was really appreciative of the person who made her a cozy fleece for when she got her weekly chemo infusions. I just want to send a big thank you to you for your work, because I know how much such those small things mean from the other side of the fence. Yes, I volunteer. I have volunteered in the medical tent for the NYC marathon for several years. This was before children. After 911 I volunteered making sandwiches for the rescue workers at ground zero. Before I started my career as a PA I volunteered at my local hospital transporting specimens to the lab and escorting patients out of the hospital. Currently I volunteer as a girl scout leader for my 9 year old's girl scout troop. I was never a girl scout as a child, so I am learning as I go. Even though I rolled my eyes when I was asked, I truly enjoy the girls and having a positive influence on them. We are currently involved in a project in building butterfly gardens in our community to restore monarch butterfly habitats. It is so much fun seeing these girls get involved. My mom is getting ready for retirement, she has been volunteering at our local animal shelter. I think she has always been involved in some sort of volunteer project for as long as I can remember. I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree. :)...See MoreHave you ever felt a place was 'frozen in time'?
Comments (8)My grandparents' house never changed. Oh, once there was a new slipcover on a chair, or some new towels in the kitchen, but that was about it. According to my father, the big changes since he was a kid were 1) a refrigerator to replace the ice box and 2) the advent of a television to replace the big radio. After my grandparents died, an uncle and his family moved in and they changed everything--new paint, wallpaper, new floor in the kitchen. Then Uncle and Aunt moved to assisted living and the house was sold. Last year, my brother was back in town and we drove out to the house so he could take a picture of it. The new owners saw us and asked what we were doing. We explained who we were and they very kindly offered to let us take a final look around the house. Interestingly, they've brought the house back to very, very close to the way it was when we were kids. The fussy wallpaper is gone and calm, neutral colors are back on the walls. They have a dining room set eerily like my grandparents. The furniture in the living is arranged pretty much the same way. There's even a chest in the upstairs hall where my grandmother had one. And it wasn't just me, my brother was exclaiming over the same things. And it's not as if the house was new when my GPs' bought it--the house was built around 1875 and my GPs' bought it in 1930. But the new owners have a lot of furniture from about the same era. We were able to tell the new owners a lot about the house and how it looked, explained why the kitchen is much newer than the rest of the house (lightening caused a fire in 1938 and the kitchen had be redone), the colors of the walls, the reason for the odd ceiling light in the basement (used to hang over a pool table). They were very kind and I had a great walk down memory lane....See MoreBad Spark Plug or Just the Carb?
Comments (6)I used to do the priming thing on older engines, but I forgot all about it. I drove 25 miles for a plug, but it didn't help me so I decided to take it in since the sooner it got in, the sooner (a week or two) it would get back. Before we took it off my truck, the mechanic gave it a yank and it fired up for him. It still wouldn't run off choke. Mechanic thought it was likely an air leak, but after spraying carb cleaner at gasket without effect, and finally realizing that this engine has a Nikki carburetor, he told me that they almost never have good results cleaning/rehabing them. So, I took it back home; gave it one more air and probe clearing; changed the apparently good fancy internal gasket; and still wasn't able to get it to start or fire. The mechanic was 20 years my junior, but I thought I was pulling almost as well, but no cigar. So I ordered up a new (hopefully the same) carb from Amazon. Then I read your post. I can see how middling compression might draw low fuel. I will see if I can find my tester and I will check the valves. But remember, until last weekend, and even two weeks ago, this engine always started easy for (apparently weak armed) me and ran fine for at least two hours....See More- 3 days ago
