What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

When my husband and I were getting married one of our guests was a young geologist from Czechoslovakia. He had emigrated to Canada and my sister-in-law became friends with him. She invited him out to my in-law’s place a few times. He was quite a nice fellow and very much an outdoorsy type of guy. My husband took him out duck hunting once. It was something my husband never really got into but always had had a fun time with his uncle doing it when he was a teen.

When our wedding rolled around, Gyorgy was invited. He gave to us a Beretta shotgun! It even had a gold plated trigger and I would think it was not cheap.

My mother and father, not outdoorsy people, were partly horrified and partly amused when we unwrapped it. I’m sure they were wondering what kind of family I was marrying into.

We still have it. I went out a couple of times hunting with my husband. It never really interested us, though. I laugh every time I see that thing in the storage room.

One other gift that left me speechless was a snorkel mask, flippers, and snorkel from my husband. He gave them to me for my birthday just after we were married. We had never talked about snorkelling, nor had I ever mentioned that I wanted to snorkel. I know that my husband had a diving certification that he had obtained before we met, but that was it.

I thanked him. It was a few years before I ever used them.

What gifts made you go hmmmm?
