What appliances to spend most money on
Comments (13)BumbyRoadtoHome, your inspiration photo is great! Good luck with your project. I am in Canada too (Vancouver) and just finished helping my brother with his appliances purchases for his house and my own for my condo. $12K budget is very challenging - hopefully this amount does not include tax. What I did learn shopping for appliances in our area is this: - there are a lot of appliances that look like what you want (stainless, clean, modern looking) but reliability can be an issue - the best brands are expensive in Canada (usually between 20% to 40% more than in the US) plus we have to pay 12% tax and discounts are minimal. The retailers here tend to not double up deals - i.e. give you a discount on top of a manufacturer's rebate. It's usually one or the other. Don't bother buying large appliances from the US - there will be service and warranty issues. - if you want high end appliances, it might be worth it for you to visit some show rooms for demo unit sales or the clearance centres of medium to high-end retailers (you would be amazed at the prices they are selling some of these units...but they might be scratch and dent as well) - you can get a good deal on the previous year's model. For example, retailers are selling their DCS inventory for the new designs coming in. - you can typically ask for discounts on Liebherr, DCS, Samung, LG, etc. but not Miele, Wolf, Subzero. - appliance sales people can do more for you when you buy a bunch of appliances together, but make sure you do your homework on prices so you know if you are truly getting a deal From your list of appliances: 1) Gas Range - why do you want dual fuel? If you want a good range with high BTU output, you might want to consider Capital and BlueStar. BlueStar sells a lower end unit for under $2K and you can hot rod it per mojavean's instructions (search the forum). If you go for Capital manual clean, it costs $5K and the RNB version of BlueStar is about the same. You might also want to check out Bertazzoni (I believe also has dual fuel) and DCS. 2) Fridge - Fisher Paykel fridges look great (modern and clean) and you can store a ton of food inside. Biggest issue with this line appears to be random noises (not that there is anything technically wrong) and that the steel dents very easily (either before it gets to you or when you start using it). You might also consider Liebherr or Miele. Built-in = more money, perhaps you should consider free-standing. 3) Speed cooking appliance - you had mentioned wanting one of these. There are only a few available in the market with GE Advantium and Miele Speed Oven dominating discussions. I have never seen the Advantium (couldn't find it). The Miele Speed Oven is superb but will cost you between $2900 to $3900 depending on the model you buy. Make sure you have the proper electrical connections (wattage and amps) to run a speed oven. Have you considered getting a microwave + a Breville Toaster Oven instead if you had the space? 4) Dishwasher - have you thought about Miele and Kitchen Aid in addition to Bosch? It surprised me that all 3 appliance brands had very similar prices for the mid-range dishwashers with stainless steel inside. 5) Hood - don't forget to add this to your budget! 6) Washer and Dryer - both samsung and LG are good mid-range brands and sales are plentiful. Steam cleaning and drying seems to be the big thing now so you'll get pushed into that direction. You might want to check out the Laundry Forum at GW for more info. Funny enough, the biggest sales for Washer and Dryers happen when new models are about to arrive and Boxing Day (Dec 26). If you are in Ontario, you might want to check out Miele Unboxed for some really great deals....See MoreWhat would you do - Appliance Combination
Comments (14)Vickie - Yeah I think I will like it too. I don't know why I am second guessing myself. Well, actually I do know why. My MIL to this day regrets not getting double ovens in her current house (been there 10 years) and I don't want to make that same mistake but an Advantium is a SECOND oven, it is just a smaller one and a MW too! WeedMeister - I have heard that the 220v is the way to go and that is what I would get. I don't think it is weird to put a MW drawer under the oven. That makes sense to me but a single oven and a MW drawer isn't really an option I am considering. Rhome - We haven't started anything yet. I am trying my darnest to get everything planned out to the T before we "do" anything. So yes, I will start to take notes of when I use the microwave, which heading toward fall and winter is more likely going to be when the oven is already in use. I hardly ever cook with the oven during the summer, which is one of the reason I am intriged by the Advantium speedcook technology. RTWilliams - I've looked at the Electrolux line and find it very appealing. If their speedcook MW oven wasn't so expensive I might go that route but I haven't been able to find much info on it and I don't particularly like the look of it....See MoreWhere would you buy "specialty" paper
Comments (19)Sorry, been AWOL... Colleenoz, there are no specialty paper stores near me... if there were, that'd be the perfect solution! Lars, yes I can take the book out. It probably weighs 20 lbs. This is a book that is displayed in a cemetery chapel. Bookwoman, I measured the paper while I had the book in my office last week - didn't write it down... but of course it's an odd size - something like 18" x 14". I'm thinking someone may have actually cut a larger sheet of paper into pages for it. When I get the book back, I will get more details. Thanks for your offer of help! I plan to take out a page that has the least # of names on it and use that as a sample page, and then have the calligrapher re-do that page when we find the right paper. My darn phone is wearing out on me... I still can't get it to send the pictures I took last week. When I get the book back I will take pictures with my camera. Thanks again everyone for your input!...See MoreMixing "specialty" appliance finishes?
Comments (3)Hi @Bekke. I'd forgotten about this post! We had finished the island and back cabinets last fall. The weather turned too cold (DH's workshop is unheated) before he could get to the pantry cabinet so we moved the fridge into place and I lived with it there for the winter and decided it really didn't jut out too much so when he resumed building this summer I had him build in the full depth fridge. I'm really liking the slate finish with our cherry cabinets, they are more subdued and now that I have the white countertops on the kitchen it no longer feels too dark and we haven't even got to the lighting yet. I finally convinced DH to ditch the OTR microwave for a hood and I doubled down and bought special microwave in the slate that would fit in our upper cabinet and I'm actually considering replacing the range with a slide in range in slate as well. A friend who works in the kitchen dept at Lowes told me that GE was going to quit making the slate. I don't know if that is true or not. I hope not, but I do feel the range could probably stand on its own (if I had to go SS) in my situation (with range and fridge nearly side-by-side) better than the fridge could. I think with yours being on a different walls it would look just fine. I agree that with the fridge the extra functionality is a big factor. That was one of the reasons we decided to stick with a full size fridge once I determined it wouldn't be too tight. In our layout with the standard depth fridge the freezer can't be open when the dishwasher is, but I didn't anticipate that being enough of a problem to be worth losing the interior fridge space and it hasn't been. Here's where we're at right now. We should be ready to put all the doors on the uppers after next weekend and I'm excited to get to the more decorative part of the remodel like the backsplash....See More- 8 months ago
