Designer secret: “The homeowner had her eye on bar stools that were out of budget,” Coddington says. “We came across these stools at a retail site, but they were the wrong fabric choice. We had them reupholstered in an affordable, durable faux leather [in] dark, dusky blue. Don’t overlook your local upholstery workroom to transform your affordable furniture finds.”
“Uh-oh” moment: “Originally we had pocket bi-fold doors to close off the bar and maintain the continuity of the long cabinet wall,” Coddington says. “Ultimately, however, we had to eliminate the doors because we couldn’t stand by their questionable longevity and high cost. We compromised by hiding the wine fridge and beverage fridge behind cabinet doors, and letting the gold mosaic tile shine. We are very pleased with the final result. The bar stands on its own as one of many focal points in the space without commanding all of your attention.”
Also on the team: William Duff Architects; Upscale Construction (general contractor); David Duncan Livingston
Cabinet paint: Super White, Benjamin Moore; backsplash tile behind stove: Allure collection, Akdo; beverage bar backsplash tile: Reve, Aurora collection, New Ravenna; stove: Wolf; refrigerator: Sub-Zero; faucet: Delta; island pendant lights: Robert Abbey; bar stool fabric: Kravet; cabinet hardware: Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.; flooring: custom stained hardwood

4. Contemporary Casual
Designers: Carlos Rodriguez Infanzon and Ivonne Perusquia of Rodriguez Studio Architecture
Location: Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York
Size: 300 square feet (28 square meters)
Cost: $45,000 for cabinets; $15,000 for appliances
Homeowners’ request: Reimagine a “decrepit house with a nice amount of land,” says architect Carlos Rodriguez Infanzon.
Grand gesture: Poggenpohl cabinets; Caesarstone countertops; concrete tile floors; marble backsplash; double-height ceiling; specialty lighting; walk-in pantry; built-in appliances
Designer secret: “One thing we did was to build in a light at the top of the seat rest below the rear window,” Infanzon says. “We use that light to bring in brightness from the window even on cloudy days.”
“Uh-oh” moment: “We found that once we were building, the house was about 10 inches narrower than we thought,” Infanzon says. “This made us have to retool the double-height space and the lighting in that area. Luckily our windows and skylights fit without having to modify them.”
Also on the team: David Joseph Photography, 360 Media Innovations (audiovisual); Greco Roman Construction (general contractor); Grant Engineering; Warm Board (radiant floors)
Wall paint: Decorator’s White, Benjamin Moore; windows: Marvin; dark gray floor tile: 18 by 18 inches, Modena; range, hood, wall oven and steam oven: Wolf; refrigerator: Sub-Zero; dishwasher: Bosch
