Critical Debate For new England
Comments (9)Last year, after losing a lovely small grove of hemlock (which shaded our deck and screened it from neighbors' view) to woolly adelgids, I wrestled with my conscience over managing the remaining hemlocks on our 1-acre property. They are tall, mature trees, and spraying dormant oil just didn't seem practical on a DIY basis. I finally decided that I would apply imidicloprid as a drench to the soil around TWO trees, the closest to our house. It seemed to me that as this would apply to a conifer which just releases its pollen (vs depending on insects), the effect on honeybees would be mitigated. There are other hemlocks a bit further away, which I opted not to treat--close to water, and had to draw the line somewhere. Not an easy decision to make either way. I am a lymphoma survivor and don't regard chemicals lightly--Monsanto studies notwithstanding, the incidence of NHL is much higher in farmers and foresters, who are exposed to herbicides and the like... Massive applications of insecticide or chemicals are not going to wipe out the Asian longhorned beetle--it didn't work with the American chestnut or the American elm--at best it would only delay the inevitable. And I'm not sure I want to be consuming maple syrup from a tree that's been treated with a systemic insecticide. But the thought of our beautiful sugar maples disappearing is almost unbearable. Do I sound conflicted enough, LOL?...See MoreWed: High Wind,Critical Fire Danger, Snow, Dust
Comments (2)I was thinking of you specifically when I linked this because y'all seem so likely to have blowing dust even if the rest of it misses you. It is creepy to see "Blowing Dust" as an official forecast. We get that sort of forecast here in Love County maybe once or twice a year, but most often in early spring more so than in early winter. With so little rainfall this fall and winter so far to hold down the soil, I think we may see "blowing dust" a lot more often this winter. This wind here has been increasing in speed the last couple of hours, but we aren't supposed to have really strong wind arrive here until late afternoon or early evening. I'm watering the yard with sprinklers that keep the water down really low so the water (or, for that matter, the surface soil) doesn't blow away. I'm not sure I remember the last time we had to worry about wind gusting in the 50s or around 60 mph in some areas of the state in December. March? Sure, but it seems crazy for December. I don't mind the wind so much when the humidity is fairly high or the grass is green. It bothers me a little more when all the vegetation is dry and dormant and the humidity is low....See Moremen as thinkers... LOL

Comments (54)"What condo would you choose? Thank you for your thoughts." Personally, I don't think I would choose either one if they lack things that are important to me that can't be easily changed. Not having an outdoor space for a simple pleasure like morning coffee would be a deal breaker. Potty pads for a dog have no appeal to me. Part of the reason to have a dog vs a cat is that a dog makes you get up and move, go out for walks.... whether you want to or not. lol. Litter boxes are bad enough, but washing pads, ew. I get the feeling, that if you chose one of these, you would be settling for something you don't really want and have regrets....See More- 5 days agolast modified: 5 days ago
