I don't usually check prices except eggs lately and coffee. I thought I would stock up on coffee. The same coffee I bought last week for 9.96 was 14.96 today. 5.00 increase on a small item makes we wonder what is ahead for us. I just bought one can,

With respect to coffee and chocolate prices (climate problems, harvest) , there are other issues at work in addition to tariffs.

I have overdone it in years past, and I did do the Three Sisters sale in May and bought plugs at GMT in May too. [not mail order] So I am pretty well set except for a few extras. Some areas of my garden are definitely filling in and have little room for additions, but I have at least four more areas that need a lot of work, so I am not in any real danger of having no room left. [g] I have a large pot near my gate, that I have tried annual groupings and a vine, one year. Nothing has satisfied me so far. I'm always looking for another way to sneak in another rose, so I thought, why not try one in the pot? I'm thinking of a non stop bloomer, like a miniature rose, or a shrub rose? It is late to find one though. I discovered this year that I am able to keep the two roses in my front, full sun garden bed, looking very good and getting some rebloom. Someone who is an organic gardener gave me a few tips and so far I'm tickled with the result. I added compost in the spring, plus an organic fertilizer, plus alfalfa pellets and it has made a big difference. I did the organic fertilizer and alfalfa again after the first flush and this year is the first time I've had rebloom. This is my third year with these two particular roses. Last year they looked so awful with a lot of insect damage and one flush of bloom followed by horrible foliage and nothing else, that I was planning on yanking them and giving up on roses. I cut them all the way back with no leaves on them in June waiting for some help to dig them out, and they came back with decent foliage for the rest of the season and little else but earned a reprieve. So this year I feel like I can make a go of it, but I'll wait for next spring to try one in that pot. Dtd....you must have a garden full of Hydrangea. [g] I seem to be getting a collection going too and they are having a wonderful year! Even the oakleaf seems to have enough water. I have some projects developing for the fall that didn't get done this spring so I need a few things. I only have a couple of pots hanging around to plant at the moment. I called NEWFS looking for the fern and mosses, but they didn't have them. I did find Blanchette in Carlisle did have a few miniature plants I was looking for. They don't have end of the season sales for some reason though. Thanks Dee, I think I will go with mad gallica's suggestion to wait until the spring for those. Thanks for reminding me about Heirloom, though. It must be too early for much plant shopping or sales. Maybe everyone is still on vacation. :-) pm2

Attention, shoppers! If you take a half-gallon of fudge ripple ice cream from your supermarket's freezer case and then remember you are on a diet, don't leave it to melt on the rack where the tabloid magazines scream "Tom Cruise Marries Alien!" Likewise, in a department store, if you suddenly realize that a pink poncho will be passe in a month, don't fling it over a display of men's socks and walk away. Nor should a four-pack of 60-watt light bulbs be wedged between the boxes of fettuccine and ziti. For a few minutes, pretend I'm your mom -- your shopping mom: Were you raised in a barn? Will you never learn to pick up after yourselves? Stop rolling your eyes and look at me when I talk to you! Listen up: More and more of you are not putting things back where they belong when you go shopping. It happens at high-end and low-end and everything-in-between stores. It occurs in supermarkets, clothing stores, toy stores, stationers and any place where merchandise isn't too heavy to lift. It even goes on at the Gap, despite clerks -- only those with eyes in the backs of their heads are hired -- who attempt behavior modification in customers by pointedly refolding polo shirts milliseconds after they are mussed. It occurs even in bookstores, where, as in libraries, there are often tables or carts with posted pleas to place unwanted books on them so that people who know exactly where they should be shelved can do so. Still, you'll find a John Grisham tome next to "101 Ways to Cook Cauliflower." Especially during sales, the dressing rooms of department stores look like pigsties -- clothing in dumping grounds on the floor or falling off hangers and hooks -- because customers won't even return them to collection racks at the mouth of the dressing room so employees can restock them. Don't make the excuse that everybody does it. What if everybody jumped off a cliff? Would you? Experts who study what is called "shrink" -- the term for inventory loss due to shoplifting, employee theft or error, and damaged or "distressed" items -- estimate that less than 1 percent of all shrink is caused by shoppers who act as though they are royalty being shadowed by a maid. (A major grocery chain has about $500,000 worth of shrink a year, according to recent studies.) This number would be higher if alert shoppers and employees didn't see wrongs and right them, says Larry Miller, president of Trax Retail Solutions in Scottsdale, Ariz., and national director of the National Supermarket Research Group. Miller estimates that shoppers (acting as mothers the world over do) or store employees rescue about 60 percent of dumped grocery items. "Most people don't look at a pound of ground beef sitting on a grocery store shelf and ignore it. They take it back to the refrigerated meat section," Miller contends. "This has always been a problem, and it occurs at all stores no matter where they are," says Barry F. Scher, vice president of public relations for Royal Ahold NV's Giant Food LLC chain. He notes that the cost for supermarkets is especially high when the item involved requires refrigeration or freezing. Even though employees are instructed by managers at various times during the day to scout for misplaced items, perishables most often have to be thrown out because it is not known how long they've been sitting around. Scher says that Giant stores don't have staffers dedicated to performing the task called "shop backs" but that it takes employees away from other duties. "Stores also lose out because the stock isn't where someone can find it and sell it," says Jon Schreibfeder, president of Effective Inventory Management Inc. of Coppell, Tex. This means that, to be confident that they have enough of any product, managers must overstock items. Schreibfeder, whose company advises retailers on ways to control inventory, says that although the practice isn't nearly as large or troublesome as shoplifting or employee theft, "we talk about the [dumping] problem continually" with clients. Schreibfeder's prescription has been to have his clients schedule regular "stock straightening" for several times a day, especially when the store isn't busy. He also said a retail customer in Bermuda learned that nothing works as well as a departing ship in making people evacuate a store, leaving stick deodorant next to the asparagus. "A cruise ship would come in and the passengers would begin shopping. They'd find they were running out of time and would leave stock scattered everywhere," Schreibfeder recalls. He and his employees helped the store employees realize that they should scurry to round up misplaced products in between dockings. He also advised the owner to mark shelves that were most often victimized by shoppers and to have employees combing those prone areas. Schreibfeder says it's conceivable that, down the line, radio frequency identification (RFID) might be able to beam out an all-points bulletin (APB) to store managers, saying, in effect: "I'm over here -- and I'm defrosting!" to help in the roundup. Both Schreibfeder and Scher are inclined to be soft on consumers who dump products thither and yon. "People these days think they are too busy. Everybody's in a rush," Scher says. But Dorothea Johnson is unforgiving. Johnson, founder of the Protocol School of Washington and an etiquette teacher for 40 years, says we all must put things back because it is right and proper and is a tiny thing we can do to keep the world from chaos. She can think of no excuse for not returning merchandise to its shelf. Practicing this daily has the side effect of increasing self-esteem, she says. "Oh, you see, not putting things back is not being mindful of the next person who comes along. Although salespeople are trained to watch out for such things, I always put things back. I can then tell myself I did the right thing," says Johnson from her home near Portland, Maine. Even parents who spend the livelong day harping on children and spouses about tidying up can slip up now and then and ignore their inner Miss Manners. The other day, in a fit of fitness, someone left a pound of bacon next to a mound of tilapia packages after glancing about the store furtively to see if anyone was looking. But do as I say, not as I do. And don't run with a stick in your hand. You'll poke your eye out.

I've joined the Vitamix club! My 16-year-old son and I made smoothies this afternoon, starting with every fresh and frozen fruit we had in the house...and then my son asked if we could throw in some spinach or kale. We didn't have any, so we added some romaine lettuce. He guzzled it and asked me to buy some kale. Tonight we made milkshakes -- naughty ones with ice cream, peanut butter, and chocolate syrup -- no hidden veggies. They were yummy. Tomorrow, we'll go back to healthy smoothies. And then we'll start playing with soups, etc. One thing that amazed me with the cookbook that came w/ the blender is that it looks like there are soups and sauces that start out as raw ingredients. and then actually get heated up during blending. Are they really hot enough to eat without heating further?? I will say that I like some soups to be chunky. Split pea, for me, should be somewhat chunky. I like the peas, chunks of potato and ham, and shreds of carrot. But for others, smoothness will be great -- like sweet potato or asparagus. Looking forward to playing around with it!

Today I went to Trader Joe's - haven't been there since very early coronavirus days. Limited to 30 people inside but there was only one person in line when I arrived. I can see why the limit as even with that you had to make a considerable effort to stay six feet away from people which everyone was trying to do. This is the first time I've been grocery shopping where every person I saw, except one, was wearing a mask. I think it may be the TJ clientele and/or the size of the store because when I went to Target across the street it wasn't like that - just a few masks. One woman and her child without masks walked right next to me in spite of a large, wide open aisle that would have allowed her to keep her distance. She seemed oblivious to the whole idea. I didn't go out quite as early today but I still found everything I was looking for including a package of disinfecting wipes and a bottle of hand sanitizer - limit one of each at Target. I noticed they had some different brands of disinfectant spray - brands I've never seen before. May be that some company that used to make something else is now making this stuff.

I too would love to know where arcy lives! Every time I visit the grocery store - at least once a week - I notice price increases. And pretty much across the board. Where is this mystical location where prices are not going up and even coming down??? Nowhere near where I live!!

I buy what I want regardless of increasing prices but I do look out for sales and discounts. And I will often go for the house brand over a national brand. I still pay more for my weekly groceries this year than I did the same time last year.

Eggs were never crazy $$ in the Bay Area, but we are not big egg eaters, and I’m a sometimes baker. I also think eggs are a ’big bang’ for cost, no matter the price. But, meat and other grocery prices keep going up.

I have been in the habit of leasing my cars. It's worked well for me as my work commute was down the road a piece, so no problem with the milage restrictions and with no kids or dogs to mess them up, it's been great. I get the fun of a brand new car every three years. Well, my lease is up in June. Can anyone possibly guess how much a car is going to cost in June?? Shudder. Im thinking I should buy the car, as its locked into 2022 prices. This is just too stressful. I haven't the foggiest idea how it's going to play out.

Back to groceries: I've seen on a few other social media sites that people say that they are stocking up on their common non-perishables, like soaps, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, whatever canned goods they usually eat, etc - trying to save as much as they can in anticipation the future "pain" that they've been told is coming. Buying a new laptop or phone now, for instance, if they expected to buy one in the next year or two.

Nope. I purchase name brand bars of soap, when the box is dented for 50% off. I have several boxes. I take showers at the gym. Rarely even shower at home. I already have a lifetime supply and I've NOT purchased bar soap in over a year! I like baking soda, instead of tooth paste. I like fresh vegetables. The farmers markets will be starting soon. I could live on fried/breaded Zucchini!

I have a flat screen TV in almost every room in the house. Not buying more. I watch a few hours a week or rent a movie from the library. I own ALL my favorite movies! I remember when I was a kid....a 35" tube TV cost me $2000....and I had one! I will adapt.

The opposite approach may be better. All prices, new and used, should be expected to rise with import charges.

Depending on how that does or doesn't actually continue in the future (since policies seem to change from one extreme to the other every few days), doing what is quoted could wind up in you buying high now and selling low in the future, the opposite of a normal strategy. If instead one were to lease now, the so-called "bring back" or end of lease value is stated in the contract and won't change.

People think leasing vs buying are two different things when they're really the same with just a few small differences. When buying, you're responsible for the entire sales price of the car, adding up the down payment if any plus the loan amount. With a lease, only a portion of the purchase price is paid through the down payment and lease payments portion that's not interest. The end of lease value is really just the remaining, unamortized "loan balance" of the purchase price. There's a guaranteed "value" to the leasee at the end of the lease term. There's no money gained or lost if you choose to walk away.

I'm not sure why grocery prices should be going up, since almost all of what we have been buying is domestic - wine being the one exception, and we have already accumulated a large collection of that.

I suppose some vegetables and fruits are seasonally imported, but in most cases I can substitute inexpensive frozen versions. I almost never buy canned fruit or vegetables, but I do have a good supply of dehydrated fruit and vegetables, and I like cooking with them or just eating the dehydrated fruit as it is. There is less waste this way because dehydrated fruits do not go rotten.

I have always avoided buying food from China, but mostly I've just seen garlic.

Lars, I think you’ll see some increase in the price of USA produce in the future due to tariffs on potash (fertilizer).

The USA imports 90% of its potash.

Tariffs aside there may be less of the usual seasonal workers on hand to harvest the crops, going forward. Replacements will imho be more expensive and farmers will have to raise prices to compensate.

I retired on March 31. My phone, laptops, and home internet were all paid for by the company so I needed to replace everything. I bought a laptop, large monitor, printer, phone, and T-mobil 5G home internet before retiring which probably saved me some money compared to if I had waited.

I have 9 - 4 week old pullet chicks in the brooder that should start laying eggs in August. I can get a 300 lb. whole hog from a farmer friend for $300 any time and we have a steer that will be ready to process in the fall. Right now feeder cattle are going for about ~$5/lb. live weight at auction.

Now that I am retired, I have more time to work in the garden. I've already planted onions, leeks, garlic, beets, radishes, broccoli, and broccolini. Peppers and tomatoes were started in March and will be planted out in a week or so. Squash and green bean seeds will be sown this week.

I think we will be fine buying the few groceries we need. Though I might have to quit the Crown Royal and switch to something domestic.

Lonejack, we just replaced our large monitor computer and both our iPads because we needed to. Bonus if it saves us money.

A lot of the imported booze has been taken off of our shelves and the local producers are getting verrry creative with what they are producing.

I’ve discovered Moroccan oranges and Egyptian lemons. They’re wonderful.

Oh, and my son-in-law bought a new truck in January.

Happy gardening. I hope the fish are biting.

We were down to our lake cabin this weekend but didn't fish because the water level is 9 feet above normal due to heavy rainfall over the last couple weeks. Can't get to the dock without going for a swim. They are slowly letting the excess out through the dam so hopefully it will be back to normal pool soon.

The tariff on potash from Canada has been reduced from 25% to 10%, but either way, I don't think it will affect the price of produce all that much - unless potash is much more expensive that I think it is. If potash is 10% of a farmer's cost to grow produce, then a 10% tariff on potash would raise the cost of the produce by 1%. I don't know why there is a tariff on potash at all, however.

Kevin, yes. Potash non compliant with CUSMA will see a 10% tariff. I’m not sure what % of total USA imported potash that is, but that increase will be passed onto the farmers. Every little bit adds to cost.

The potash tariffs will not increase input costs that much in the corn belt. It was the pandemic spike in nitrogen fertilizer costs in 2021 that hurt the farmers the most. That was caused by the spike in natural gas price.

Is there something special about KC feeder cattle to sell for $500 per 100 lbs. (CWT)? Market price for feeder cattle as of today this minute is $291.59 per CWT. Do KC cows come with their own BBQ sauce?

lol Kevin - That was the price I was told by my herd partner this weekend and it surprised me. I know the breed makes a difference. That may be the price for Certified Angus IDK. We sold 4 feeders last fall for $3.55/lb. Those were Baldies (Angus bull, Hereford or Hereford/Angus mix cow). $6800 total for the 4.

ETA: we lost a newborn calf last week which was pretty sad.

What's the TV news story I saw yesterday about people taking out loans to buy groceries?

I know a goodly percentage of Americans were already carrying an unusually large amout of debt on their credit cards -- in effect paying 20% on a loaf of bread. How does this 'loan' news differ?

I had to look up what a "buy now, pay later" loan was, because I thought all loans were essentially buy now, pay later. It seems they're essentially really short term instalment loans for a specific purchase, cutting the total purchase price into weekly or biweekly instalments, available often through individual retailers and usually without interest. https://www.investopedia.com/buy-now-pay-later-5182291 Reading this, I remember seeing those offers to split up payments of my purchase when I've bought things online, but I never looked into them.

Major banks are cashing in on this ’buy now, pay later’ deal. When I have a debit card transaction - I think it has to be a certain amount - I often see a note asking if I want the debit against my account to be split up! It’s startling to me since I wouldn’t have thought my bank - or the type of account I have - would generate this instant loan thing. I think these loans used to be called Payday Loans. That is, $$ to get you by & pay immediate need bills that can’t wait until your next pay check. Consumer Protection cracked down on predatory pay day lending company practices but the short term unsecured loan market is still out there.

My husband worked with guys that took our those "quick" loans. They had $30K coming out parties for their 16yr old daughters. Or live bands for Birthday bashes that played ALL night! They often defaulted on the loans....they didn't have that kind of cash. Expensive food and catering was part of the "experience"....

Many, many more people use those payday loans out of desperation - to pay for more necessary things like car repairs, rent, medical bills.

And yeah - certain factions have been gunning for the CFPB since its inception, and now it looks like they're getting their wish - we consumers don't need no stinkin' financial protection -- right? 🤨

There are several walk-in/store-front loan outfits in town. Must be people using them.

I don't see an appreciable difference in those loans vs. carrying a ccard balance.

I think many people using payday loans don’t have credit cards or have maxed them out. They are considered predatory because the people who can least afford them are the ones using them. There is a new round of ads I see that claim to give people an advance on their paycheck with no ’mandatory’ fees. Which is exactly what the traditional payday loan outfits do, so I haven’t figured out what fhe new hook is.

One of my good friends has worked a good part of his career advocating for low income consumers and working to change the laws these outfits are regulated by. But I’m sure all of his hard work was dissolved with the stroke of a pen.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of people using them don't qualify for a credit card in the first place. And many of the "payday" type loans have interest rates far exceeding the high rate of credit cards (varies by state laws, apparently).

Coffee prices have jumped in the past couple months. This is crazy. I go back and forth between this and Maxwell House. I used to buy MH for 9.99 up until recently and the sale price is now 11.99. This PC coffee has always been on sale for 9.99 until last year, and now it's crazy.

I was always disappointed that the TV hit "Mad Men" didn't get into how advertising and planted magazine stories convinced generations that they really did Deserve A (Whatever) Today.

In 2008, after the Bush administration experimented with incredible, no interest down mortgages, there were a lot of TV interviews with people who were were losing their homes. When you looked around beyond the reporter and the homeowners, those houses were usually crammed with stuff!

Several foreclosed on houses I looked at had a corvette in the driveway in the listing, AC, sprinkler system, a security system, central vacuum, a dog washing station in the garage AND a satellite dish on the roof.
