What did Santa bring you? Anything cooking-related?

Well, not Santa, but Elery, and that's even better. He bought me a large Zojirushi griddle which can also be used as a warming tray. When the grandkids are over they always want bacon and pancakes or crepes. This griddle will hold an entire pound of bacon and make 8 pancakes, so all the kids can eat at once. I've already gone through two Presto electric griddles, so hopefully this one will last longer. I've been very pleased with my Zo breadmaker and the Zo rice cooker, so I'm optimistic.

In return, as a combination birthday and Christmas Gift I bought him a combo wood fired pizza oven/smoker. It's by Ninja, and it's electric and makes a pizza in 3 minutes, so far so good. We have not yet tried smoking anything in it, though.

My daughters are predictable. Amanda will get me a gift card to Family Farm and Home so I can replace the gate or buy something garden related. Ashley will get me a shirt with some clever remark printed on it. The kids will make something crafty. The Princess is the wild card, you never know what she might come up with. In return they are all getting cash except the small Princesses, who both wanted Birkinstock sandals. I shook my head when I found out that Birkies were again fashionable.

And what about you? Surely SWMBO must have gotten something food or coffee related?

I got a mini toaster oven, that goes above my range. His name is Wall-E and he is Giselle’s assistant.

Also a set of kitchen knives, which is causing some ungratitude and dissenssion.

I like my existing knives, they all have stories. The long slicer was SWMBO’s father’s when he was a butcher, the curved slicer was my second “good” knife and I’ve had it 35-ish years, that one Judith pulled from her pile at Cookin’ in San Francisco, those we got in Paris, etc. I don’t want to replace them with a set of Chinese-made faux Japanese knives with printed Damascus patterns, even if they are perfectly decent and attractive knives. I suggested sending the set back, which put Santa in a short funk, so now I think this set will live here until the new wears off, then get a college education.

Also, six pounds of assorted green coffee beans.

Where I currently live, I only have a balcony and it would be pretty hard for someone to get to it to take anything. I did live in Greenfield for a while and had my own outside area for my apartment. I was amazed no one took any of my stuff but then maybe they didn't like it. They did steal patio furniture off of some of the patios. That has got to suck to have stuff stolen. My boyfriend and I have tossed around the idea of moving into a home he owns in a kind of rough area of town to save money. I know people would probably steal stuff out of the front yard there. I thought I could make some big concrete birdbath or something that would give them a hernia if they tried stealing it. Congrats on the new baby niece!

I've started looking at things & thinking would my SS person like this? Can't wait to see who I get. I like cross stitch, cats, candles, baking & cake decorating items. Any plant I don't have (including bulbs or seeds) is great especially fragrant, colorful, odd or unusual & I like plants with a story behind them. An actual non-fading marker that works on my window blind tags would be priceless. Sign me up for your favorite seed, craft & other interests catalogs too. Linda

Here the gardening gifts weren't exactly forthcoming! The closest thing was new batteries and chargers for the camera and a camera for a kid who keeps stealing one of mine! But I did get a new PDA to keep track of stuff on! Oh and he got a flash drive for his laptop (which I use on vacations to put my pics of flowers I want!) Oh let's see, there were the manicure tools to fix the nails I wreck in the garden and the king size heating pad that both of us could use at once after a long day in the yard. OK if you think about everything in the right way, they're all garden gifts!LOL

I am not into selling heirlooms. Basically they seem to want a good red tomato. So I am trying a few of the others. I am setting 80 days as top limit for a tomatoes. I sell vine ripened tomatoes . That many days does eliminated a bunch. Yellow pears sells and some cherry My colored one were a disaster really because of the horrible weather. So was main crop. First year just red and then red cherry and year pear. This year , my second try I added a few more to test. Money I take it to tight for people to try things. I saw a big difference this year from last. More trying to grow a few tomatoes in their back yards. I will test out these colored tomatoes again. Prices here at market are low. All of us were below store prices. I am limited in starting space and sun/warm space to grow them. I am trying to improve that part. Ever see a cat go down the row under the black plastic??? They think ditches are to play in when they are younger. My cats `are working cats. If I would have row covers the cats would insist on getting inside them. I wonder if the raccoons would too???? I doubt it. I do not know what Earl of Edgecombe is so , have not tried. I am waiting on more seed catalogs and to decided finally what tomatoes and tomatoes to public seems here to be round smooth ones.

A Breville counter oven. My kitchen has just the one oven, many times I could use two. It's not living on my counter though, its on a stainless cart that rolls like a dream from pantry to either of two convenient outlets in my kitchen depending on what else I may be doing. I baked my niece's (really nephew's wife) pecan pie in it (she's from Texas and one year asked if she had been in the family long enough she could request the pie that meant home and holiday to her). The oven worked flawlessly. I'd bravely tried the convection feature that I rarely use on my full size stove, never quite confident in adjusting timing and temp and the book the former owner left in the house doesn't go into it in any detail.

I found 4 little quilted bases/cups? in which to sit a bowl in the microwave for easy removing once very hot in my stocking. Called 'huggers' and could take the place of a trivet on the table too. No need to reach for a hot pad when food is done. Also a set of 5 nesting glass bowls with lids for food storage (I try to limit my plastic) that I didn't really need and I'm not quite sure yet where to put them away 😊

No, no cooking. Santa brought me a 20 inch six strand of matched freshwater pearls set with sterling. I have already worn them while cooking if that counts :)

Santa shopped for herself and bought Kitchen Aid accessories. I've had the large stand Kitchen Aid for many years, dating back to when I used to grind my own wheat and bake my own bread, but now that I'm widowed, I just don't use it much except for holiday baking. I've never had accessories but decided I was not putting the machine to it's best use, so I thought I'd try this:
KitchenAid Fresh Prep Slicer/Shredder Attachment: Stand Mixer Accessory, Dishwasher-Safe, 5 Pieces. The dishwasher safe sold me. I use the Cuisinart for many of these tasks but when I'm cooking, I often need it for more than one task and don't want to wash or dry it. So I figure I can shred parmesan with the KA and chop onions in the Cuisinart and everything can go in the DW.

When I was researching, I also saw this and decided, since I've always wanted to make zoodles and need to eat healthier, so I bought this, too! Also DW safe: KitchenAid Spiralizer Attachment with Peel, Core and Slice - Metal Stand Mixer Accessory, Dishwasher-Safe

Only cooking related as they involve food...........a jar of organic and very local honey, homemade spiced and candied nuts and a gift card for my favorite local 'gourmet' grocery store.

And my beloved stepdaughter added to my collection of bee themed coffee mugs and new tea towels. I have a thing about bees......

The recent spate of holiday cooking and baking has revealed some gaps in my cupboards of necessary utensils so I may be doing some gifting to myself in the coming weeks. A candy thermometer and new omelet pan for sure. I need no new appliances.

This was a couple of years ago, but DH and I bought a GOOD knife together about 50 years ago. Daughter tried selling cutco and mentioned that our wooden handle was cracked and smelly (It WAS). I sent our knife off to, I think Tennesee to be re handled! He was gobsmacked!

I got a new burr grinder for coffee as the old one (also a Christmas present) was probably about 20 years old and has been showing signs of being on the way out. I’m planning to buy myself a non-stick frypan as I want a really large one and I want to be able to wash it as soon as I've finished cooking.

My main gift was a pair of boots with built in cleats but great for navigating icy walks. So not kitchen related.

I was gifted pasta from the Italian village my step sister’s BIL is from as well as sauce, anchovies and instructions on how to prepare. Other food related item were Chili flakes, vanilla paste, part of a wheel of local cheese and baklava.

My sister and I are in a coop gallery and she gave me a bowl from one of the newer members. Her son gave me a bowl/mug.

I had bought the latest Francis Mallman book as a gift. He is usually all about cooking meat with fire. This one is vegetables and fruits cooked with fire. I have made his salad squash cooked in coals served with arugula and goat cheese in the past. I decided the book wasn’t appropriate for who I intended it for so I guess it is my gift to myself. Not sure if it has recipes I will use but I like learning new ways to cook veggies.

Here is someone for the self-Santa who has everything including flies.

The Bug-A-Salt is a pump action shotgun that fires table salt.

Here we will demostrate the terrifying power of this fly-killing weapon, using an aluminum foil target. Imagine that's a fly. Do ya feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?

Blam! Or rather, pop! See how the foil has been crumpled by the blast of salt.

In addition to two tears at the center of the pattern, the foil is peppered with salt strikes. If this had been a fly, its wings would be shredded, its body perforated, and it would be expiring, paying the ultimate price for having dared bring filth, pestilence, and - if you have a Bug-A-Salt - entertainment to our kitchen.

This is Kosher salt, but ordinary table salt is just as lethal.

I am not a paid spokesperson for Bug-A-Salt, and I bought this with my own money. I can now defend my family from house flies, fruit flies, mosquitos, even murder hornets. So can you. Get Bug-A-Salt now! Just $39.95, salt not included.

We'll be in Jamaica for Valentine's Day, so the cookies we'll be giving away need to be heart-shaped with red sprinkles. Santa brought these cookie cutters for us. (Okay, I was Santa.)

Surprisingly, yes (surprising because I'm usually the 1st to say, "Please no presents for adults; we have too much stuff anyway." But I think my nephew wanted to give us something special as we gave them a gift certificate to Canli's, Seattle's best restaurant, when they moved up there this past August.

This knife is from Hida Tools, an old-time, amazing craftsman-oriented Japanese tool shop in Berkeley, CA. It's the 240mm length and beautifully balanced despite its weight.

Wow jakkom you were clearly atop Santa’s nice list! I am in deep envy. That’s beautiful.

Sigh. I need no knives, but I miss the Santa who used to just give me knives. Very glad for Jakkom and all who got lovely new knives.

The only cooking related gift I've received is pine nuts from Mongolia. I've yet to learn what makes them different or special. It came with a beautiful Mongolian textile, similar to a mola (S.American), formed into a pillow cover. Beautiful! But I suppose Santa is miffed that I haven't used my birthday pots…. :/

No cooking presents. I'm totally in awe at the idea of a pair pf bear paws to shred pork butt....... my mind is boggling. I'm very envious of the fly killing salt gun!

I got some lovely presents - bracelet from my husband, and lots of other lovely things..... they all know I like to choose my own cooky stuff. It sounds like we've all had a lovely christmas.

LoneJack you wouldn't happen to have a photo, would you? Please?

  • last year

Jack, that does sound positively carnivore-ish, LOL. I know just what you mean, though, and those are very handy.

Dang, I want one of those salt guns!

The Princess showed up with a gift she was so excited about that she couldn't wait. Two matching soup bowls with lids, a bottle of good olive oil, a tea towel with a cow on it and one that says "A bushel and a peck" because I used to sing that when she was tiny. Oh, and two journals entitled Grandma/Grandpa's story. They have spots to fill in information about favorite childhood pastimes and pets, what we remember about parents, etc. Homework disguised as a gift, LOL, we are supposed to fill them out and give them back to preserve the family history.

Tomorrow I'll be taking unused gadgets to Goodwill. That includes the egg cooker that actually uses more water and time than just boiling the eggs by the time you steam/cool/mess with the thing. A Fro-nana machine that was supposed to make frozen fruit into a "soft serve" sorbet type dessert but mostly just produces slimy mushed up bananas. A soda stream that uses so much CO2 or whatever that it's cheaper to buy bubbly water.

Oh, and the neighbors, being Polish, brought a lovely piece of Polish pottery but a handle was broken and so it is being returned/replaced.

We only do stocking stuffers now (except for the grandkids). As for cooking related, I got a tin of Partanna olive oil, an 8-oz. container of Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning and a gift certificate to a local butcher shop we like.

Almost forgot, our realtor sent us delicious pears from Harry & David, along with frozen sweet and savory goodies from Porto’s Bakery here in SoCal. A friend sent us a gift box from Kansas City Steaks…something she‘s done several times this year. Everything’s in the freezer. The Porto’s ”sweet” box says ”Cheese Rolls, Rufigiado and Dulce de Leche Besito.” The ”savory” box has ”Potato Balls, Meat Pies and Empanadas.” I need to check their website for the specifics.🤷‍♀️

My sis and BIL came by for a holiday visit. I got cooking loot. A Kilner 2 gallon ceramic fermenting crock set and a cabbage shredder. And a pair if Misen carbon steel pans. And a pair of food sticks. Hand carved, they are hair sticks, and also have a usable fork and spoon carved into the tops and can be used like chopsticks. I will enjoy them as hair sticks, but likely won't be using them much for food, hehe.

My son gave honey from Oregon, one that's special in that it tastes like Marshmellows . I have yet to try it. I was also given a locally made Lemon liquor (?). My daughter got it at the local Farm Stand in Moorpark, CA. Once again, I have yet to taste it. She said it tastes supper good. I will be looking forward to that. (Once-upon-a-once, I made something that was soooo good from my lemon trees, but, unforuately, I have never been able to reproduce it. )

Nothing cooking related. I got one of those big kettles to melt big batches of wax for my candle making, a car and a puppy. Oh and a home gym/weight machine thing. To burn off all the Christmas calories. I guess that could be cooking related.

I am a big fan of buying used higher-end cars. Let someone else take the depreciation. A 2011 ML350 new was like $70,000 in today's dollars. I'd never spend that much on a car . . . but I'd buy a used one!
