One Early Holiday Plus -- Panettone

Last year I couldn't find stollen anywhere, and we talked about a substitute, panettone. That was another whole search.

This week I found an early selection of panettone on stand-alone rack near the dairy department at my very ordinary chain grocery.

I've discarded the packaging and can't recall the name -- a pretty yellow box with a red bow carrying tie on top, made in *Brazil* of all places. (Old Italian recipe, of course..)

I bought the traditional kind with not-too-many bits of candied fruit. They had other varieties, including some with chocolate bits. Mine was only bout $8 for over a pound. They had single-portion boxes too. I've eaten half already, spread with good butter. I expect I'll slice and toast the remainder, although it's very light; not dense.

Aldi here is selling both panettone and stollen. I love panettone as does DH. Tried the chocolate chip kind once when they were out of the original candied fruit kind and didn't like it at all, even though I normally love chocolate chips. These ones tasted waxy and weird.

I get mine from Trader Joe's. Will be going tomorrow to see if they got any in.

I make it myself but DH occasionally buys some but he gets it at Costco. There is a great bakery over in Pt Townsend Wa. where you put your name on a list. Really good and not all that expensive. It means a ferry trip though. I don't recognize the description of the packaging. Costco is red.

Paula sweetie, your link really busted my allowance wide open. Only a few pennies left of it. That link has some serious miniature garden toys. Among other things I ordered the bistro table and chair set in white....now I must paint OUR REAL set white or offwhite. And I got the chicken coop with chickens...don't you know my DH mentioned building such a coop and getting about 3 little egglayers tonight? It was meant to be! Then the garden bench and chair and the arbor and the wagon like the one I have really, and the martin house and the bee skep (for Quilting Bee Hosta) The watering can and the garden tools and the galvanized tub ..... it is hard to stop once you get started. I can see these adding a lot of eye level appeal to otherwise plain plantings of multiple hosta or fern etc in bowls or tubs. This kicks it up a notch from simple pot feet! Is there a contest for Miniature Gardens? I am enchanted by the bistro table with the gazebo or arbor. Jo, you can make one as beautiful as that 200+ $$dollar one. Very exciting to think of a couple of the tubs set up. However, I know this is not my main passion. It is a great diversion adding variety to the garden experience.

Thanks Boo! I'll take a look. I just finished two batches of English toffee per my other thread to Lars. We're having a cookie swap with my family on the 15th at our Christmas celebration (I have 4 brothers and 4 sisters), but I was asked to bring toffee! I'm heading in to do some spritz next. We love our little decorated butter spritzes!! I'm not as adventurous as so many of you though. I'm overwhelmed by those who bake 10-15 varieties! I think I tend towards more candy and I don't know why. I always make a peppermint white chocolate fudge, plus some regular chocolate, I make toffee, pistachio brittle and peppermint bark. Those are the things my girls ask for rather than the cookies although we all dive into the spritzes. Happy Baking!

Just keep it tactful (to avoid hurt feelings) and honest when Dad calls about it again...thank him for the invitation to be included at Sm's family's get-together, then politely refuse. Keep it plain and simple. Christmas Eve, church and Mom is your personal long standing tradition. Something you feel is very important to both your mother and you. No need to feel guilty and/or have to try and justify your feelings/actions in maintaining your Christmas Eve tradition. You could offer up a possible other afternoon to celebrate Christmas with your father if there is a day that works better for him. If that's not an option for him, not your problem. There are 365 days in a year. If SM feels it's important enough to her to have a family gathering including both daughters together, she has 364 other choices. I'm sorry that SSis feels since Gma passed there is no reason to carry on a Christmas Day tradition. Perhaps the cease even makes sense to Dad/SM ect, but what they are planning aka trying to push onto you does not 'work' for you and your traditions. It's just as simple as that. You don't intend to change your Christmas Eve (even if it means no Christmas Day with Dad, be prepared that they may do SM's family on the Eve and choose to do nothing on the Day) and you don't intend to be guilted and/or pressured for the next four months over it. Dad can hand SM a tissue for her tears. SM's upset has little to nothing to do with anything you have said or done. It's her daughter who has chosen to alter whatever tradition was in her household.

Tonight the temp will go down to 3º, with wind chills of -13, and then a HIGH of 11 tomorrow, with -16 wind chills. I will not be wearing my new coat, because I will not so much as open the front door except to pluck some firewood off the porch. I usually put my garbage out and set up the trash bins on Tuesday, but I'll do that today as it's a "warm" 21º. I also want to hang a bird feeder or two. I've been holding off because of reports that the bears haven't gone into hibernation. We need a little summer's rhythm, Summersrhythm!

Patriciae, At Panamore you also need to sign a list for other things as well. Some things they only bake on some days of a week. One of witch is a rye bread. They also send lots of breads to the food bank, and is snaped up very fast by people.

MIL made a stollen for Christmas morning every year. I never understood the attraction. I make my people caramel rolls. Large, warm, gooey with caramel dripping. DELISH.

I found panettone at Cárdenas, which is a Mexican market. I think it was also made in Brazil, but it was very good and cheaper than what I bought at Sorrento Italian Deli in Culver City, which had huge stacks of panettone in several flavors, including chocolate. Theirs was from Italy, however.

I also bought fruitcake from Collins Street Bakery in Corsicana, TX, which is not far from where I grew up. I plan to buy some more this year. I think I bought some Bourbon for soaking it, but I'll probably use Rum this year because I don't know which Bourbon to buy. I might use Brandy instead and perhaps add some Amaretto.

rob -- That's IT! Yellow box, red bow, over a pound, made in Brazil. Even the same price at my Albertson's chain (Jewel in Chicagoland). I see the reviews on that page are mediocre, but since I never had the previous incarnations, it tastes fine to me. I had some this morning...still moist a week after I opened it. Thanks for identifying it for me.

That was exactly one review which said there was no candied fruit in it but that is listed on the ingredients.

One of the amazing things to me is how long Panettone keeps. Even the home made stuff.

It is a favorite for DH to make French toast.

Lars, my parents ordered us a fruitcake from Collins Street for a few years. I never though I would like fruitcake, but yum, heated up and with coffee it sure was good!

We discovered challah makes amazing French toast.

I also make French toast with panettone, but my favorite bread for French toast is brioche. However, I do especially like the raisins in panettone in French toast.

@Lars - We always had fruitcake from Collins Street while growing up and I still love it as a treat for the holidays. Makers Mark is a good, smooth bourbon.
