I have the most responsive and efficient air conditioning repairman!

Which is of the utmost importance in the south, because we spend so much of the year with exceedingly hot weather. For example, of the next 15 days, 7 of them will be 90° or above, and with the humidity, it'll feel much higher. Right now it's 93° but feels like 98°, for example.

Last year, a capacitor went out, probably because my air conditioner runs all the time. He had it repaired within an hour if calling him, and it cost $100. At the beginning of the season this year, the pan was collecting condensation every day, multiple inches high. Even after I cleaned out spout that goes into the condensate pump, it was still accumulating. Took him a couple of hours and $125 bucks. Today, because it's been running all summer long full blast, they had to clean off off the condenser and it was $230.

I can't believe how inexpensive all this stuff is, and how quickly they get it done. It's nice to have this guy, to keep me from having to do without my A/C for longer than a couple of hours. So essential here. 😊

I will have a bigger expense coming up, probably next season. It has begun leaking freon, and it's likely to be caused by a faulty coil. That'll require the unit be opened up, so we'll see how quickly I need it, and how expensive that'll be. But at least he told me ahead of time and didn't try and fix it today, charging me an arm and a leg. Still singing the praises, because honesty goes a long way. ❤️

Good for you! I always try to stay on the good side of my tradesmen. And, they respond when we call.

Axel: Searching best apples Santa Cruz, a bunch of your posts came up. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I went to the Nursery to buy a Gala apple bare root, choosing Gala because there is one growing a few doors away from my yard. My former neighbor gave me some of the apples which were very good, better than store bought. But the man at the nursery said the Pink Lady is a much better apple than the Gala. I asked if it would do well in my area of Santa Cruz, which is in Live Oak by the upper harbor by Capitola Road. He assured me that it would. But when I got home I read the tags; they said that Pink Lady is for hot climates, so I wonder if I should take it back tomorrow and get the Gala or another variety. What do You think? Do You know if Pink Lady will ripen well in my neighborhood? Among store-bought organic apples, I like the Pink Lady the best, then the Braeburn, and the Gala third. It would be nice to grow an apple that keeps well and (optionally) could be eaten raw or cooked. I'd probably prefer a later ripening variety than one that ripens in summer when there are still plenty of other fruits available. It's pretty warm where I live, but probably nothing like the summer heat where you live. Aren't you in Grape-growing country in the SC mountains? Which red or reddish apple would develop the best flavor in my area,on a dwarf or semi-dwarf stock, and ripen for sure? I don't even know for sure what chill requirements mean, but it has gone below freezing maybe 10 times in the last couple months, which is probably a bit more than usual. Any advice you give me will be greatly appreciated. The other trees I'd like to plant are a pineapple guava and a Japanese plum. Both have been observed growing in my area, and both make delicious fruit, although no-one knows what varieties they are. Thank-you, I really enjoy your posts. -Gala (like the apple, I always say)

Doing a small powder room with 2x6 pearl marble subway pattern on walls up to 40" topped by a marble mini brick border and marble chair rail. I'd prefer Not to use a marble floor because its at the beach . I have found this carrera look porcelain that works though its a tad whiter , I would use grey grout . Should I get the real marble floor or look for a different porcelain , I really don't mind the upkeep on the walls but would rather not worry about countertop and floor as its a heavily used bath . as for countertop , on the white 30" vanity , shall I use torquay or a plain white quartz . ? thanks for input . For the record my friend rented a beach house wilth all carrera countertops and was given a 2 page list of all things to avoid , she ended up covering the entire countertop w placemats for the month rather than worry about what would stain or etch them .

You all are reminding me how truly blessed I am. I know a man who lives not far from me, out here in the back of beyond, who can do just about anything along the lines of construction. He put a roof over my deck and made me a lovely screened-in porch, he put a new roof on my house, last year he completely rehabbed the house's exterior, built me a new gate for the fence, and cut down two large trees. I use an excellent heating/air conditioning specialist who certainly has gone the extra mile to keep my old heat pump going--local family operation. I found a plumber who--get this--works evenings and weekends, for the convenience of people who have jobs. It took me several years of screaming, cursing, pacing, throwing things, etc. and finally I found all these guys through word of mouth. Two of them do no advertising. I am ever so thankful that I know reliable, trustworthy people to call because I surely do remember what it was like before!

Ty, Tina. What a nice comment. I'm so sorry for you about the loss of your mother and this being a difficult week for you. It's all in the course of life, isn't it? I keep telling myself that. As I've mentioned before, I have friends who've lost children, very young spouses, parents when THEY were children...perspective helps me with this. Besides the suffering that Cipro put my father (and my sister, his primary caretaker) through, I think it's responsible for rendering him too frail to survive the surgery they wanted to do for the cancer, which would have actually cured him. Now we're hoping for an extension of his life for a couple of years. That's hard to take. It really is true when people say prayers and kind words are so helpful. I never knew how true it was to receive these kinds of thoughts (No idea why, as I, and I'm sure everyone here have always been sincere when GIVING them! lol), but boy, they really do make a difference!

You're lucky to have found what sounds like an honest HVAC person. It's an industry too full of dishonest scoundrels.

If your AC equipment is more than 10 years old, it uses a refrigerant type (R-22) that is no longer available. You can see what it is on the label on the outside equipment. Expect to have to replace it if it's leaking.

I suspect you live in a lower cost of living area than many others here do. Tradesmen can be very expensive - in my area, the "call" charge for people like HVAC, plumbing, electricians, etc is often in the $125-150 range. That may or may not be used as a credit against the time actually spent or waived if the work involved is many hundreds of dollars or more. It varies.

My A/C went out last Sunday, and I had my HVAC guy here in less than 20 minutes. It was only 101° outside (low temp that morning was 91°), but the humidity that day was 50%, which is rare for here.

He told me there was a $150 service charge for coming on Sunday, but I agreed to pay it, since it was an emergency. When I called, the indoor temp was 80°, but it was 83° within an hour or so. The A/C had a broken fan that needed to be replaced, and fortunately, he had one on his truck. Total price (I think) was $700, but he gave us a 3 year guarantee on the fan. Today it is 114°, and high temperatures next week will remain above 108°. Humidity is down to 17%, which is high for here - normally at this time of year it is 5-7%.

If I lived somewhere so dependent on a working AC, I think I’d have to stash a portable unit for emergencies, so I could cool at least one room! How wonderful to have such responsive service people.

I had a capacitor go out in my rentals AC 2 years ago. It was $400 to replace it. I was told by the honest AC guy that the capacitor only cost $75 for the part, the rest....labor. Another time the AC coils were clogged, that was $400.

You got a deal!

How lucky are you! I still miss my appliance repair guy who moved back home to New Zealand. He was a genius and very reasonable.

I married my HVAC guy! Well, he was an apprentice at the time for big buildings. He's always put in our furnaces, A/C's, etc. But he's getting too old. We paid a company to replace our hot water heater, furnace and A/C a few years ago. It was $7,000 but so worth it.
