How have your holiday parties and entertaining changed?

Was thinking about this this morning as I was cooking breakfast and made a mental note DH really should get rid of his coffee bean grinder, it hasn't been used in years. Which took my mind to y'know very few people drink coffee anymore, which then led me to other ways things have changed over the years in terms of entertaining.

Here's what I've noticed in my own family:

  • Very few drink coffee anymore. I don't even bother digging out the Mr. Coffee to brew a larger batch anymore, I just have DH run a couple K-cups through the Keurig and put that in a single carafe, half of which I usually end up dumping.
  • People don't eat as much as they used to, especially not desserts. Always had at least two desserts out for a party, I still tend to have two dessert choices even though I know I'm going to giving at least half of both away.
  • People don't stay as late anymore. This has always been a peeve of mine -- go through all that effort and expense to host a get-together and some people eat and run. It seems to be getting worse the last couple years for summer parties, but oddly not Thanksgiving.
  • There are fewer people that attend. That is just part of families changing over time -- deaths, too old to drive, grown kids moving away, whatever.
  • More people want to sit inside during summer get-togethers. I get it if it's ridiculously hot and humid or raining or something, but c'mon -- 80's and sunny with a gentle breeze blowing, a picture-perfect day out on the property? What's better than that in the summertime? (yes, I set things up under the shade trees). People do this when others host in the summer, too -- not specific to my house.
  • Nobody wants to go for a walk anymore. This used to be a thing with us -- after eating or "downtime", a couple of us or a small group would walk around the neighborhood. It's rare that anyone suggests this anymore, even on those picture-perfect days I mentioned above.
