company holiday party ideas - need ideas

Hi there,

I am hosting a holiday party for a site of 100 employees and their SO the first week in December.

I have the restaurant and band (bosa nova) lined up.

Any ideas on a good mixers or entertaining games to humor folks during the evening.

Event will run about three or so hours.

We were going with a las vegas night but that is going to be too expensive.

I'm not a big fan of games at adult events, I would have thought the music and conversation would be enough.
One thing I did encounter at some large gathering which I thought was a great idea was a magician who went from table to table and performed a few small magic tricks for each group. It was fun and didn't intrude too much- if you get people like me who don't enjoy games they won't be too happy standing around or having others try to cajole them into joining in.

I agree with colleen. Genrally, no party games are needed for adults. If you have prizes or company stuff to give away, just do an attendance prize drawing.

The band could have some stuff lined up that they do at weddings,etc. You may want to ask them if you really want something done. Maybe you could 'teach' line dancing or soemthing along those lines, but generally you don't want to have to compete with the band.

There was a magician who came around to tables at a restaurant that we went to recently. Of course, he generally dealt with the kids. I'm not even sure that would go over too well with most adults.

Keep it simple.

Well, I think if you're serving cold food, I'd at least offer hot buttered rum or hot sangria, perhaps? Don't offer anything that needs to be cut with a knife; using a fork and juggling a glass of wine is the most you can ask of any guest. Sliced meat platters are good, and they can look very festive if you roll them up and pin them with colorful toothpicks (which makes them also MUCH easier to pick up as opposed to slices fanned out on a tray). Cube the harder cheeses; makes it easier to pick up than having to slice everything. Crostini are good with everything, including a tuna-red pepper spread on top. You can also smear them with cream cheese and top with a slice of smoked salmon and a sprig of dill; these will go very fast! You can use cucumber rounds as a base instead of bread or crackers -- this is good with crab salad, or hummus. I'd still do a couple of lasagne casseroles, myself. Not too tall, just a couple of manageable layers. Or stuffed medium-size pasta shells. Bake one, put it out, then 1 hr later bake the other one and put it out. Easy, and doesn't need to be kept warm although a warming tray, which you can probably borrow from someone, helps. I'm just not fond of a buffet with nothing but cold foods, particularly when people are drinking.

Improving foot traffic: You have to reach people who are not connected with the school. Post a listing on Craiglist. See if your town will allow signboards to be put up at major intersections, or signs posted around town the day before. Alert any assisted living facilities or the like about the event. They are often looking for good ideas for short trips for their residents. Ask vendors if they will post a poster in their store (if they have a storefront). You can also go around town and see if any other stores would be willing to have a poster up for a week or two. And some completely unsolicited advice, based on this: "As I'm quickly finding out, filling all the different sub chair positions with parents is like pulling teeth. I'm about ready to bail myself. " Sometimes, when you really can't get anyone to volunteer to help, or not nearly enough people, then it's time to cancel holding that activity and time to come up with something else. Volunteers get burnout. And if not enough people in the organization are willing to do the work to pull off the fundraiser, then it's time to stop holding it. (Not this year, but for future years.) What happens is that when the announcement is made that the event is cancelled, either new people who care enough about it step forward to manage it, or everyone breathes a sigh of relief that they don't have to go through that again. There are other fundraising ideas out there. Maybe this one has reached retirement age.

I like foggyi's suggestions about stations at a community center or maybe a church since you aren't serving alcohol.Have 3 different cakes one at each station.One an anniversary cake, one 40 years on the job and a 60th birthday cake for your bride(loved that you still call her that after 20 years) Have the catering staff stand at each station serving your guests and replenishing the food. Have a videographer there to make a video of the night and a photographer taking picks at another station...kinda like prom pictures. Have a DJ there playing you and your bride's type of music. Let the DJ take requests and dance with your bride. Have the photographer take pics of the both of you cutting your anniversary cake, a pic of you cutting your work cake and then your bride cutting her birthday cake..Have 3 different flavored cakes like a white cake with butter cream icing, a german chocolate cake for your job, and maybe a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for your wife's birthday cake. Request on the invitations that it is fancy party attire...or whatever you want.. But I still think foggi's idea of the stations is the best idea... .

I also agree that a 5-7 timeframe would need heavier foods as it would be around suppertime and some/many would not have eaten their evening meal before that time. So, possibilities? Gougeres, cheese straws, cheese thumbprints filled with hot pepper jelly, hot cheese and artichoke dip, spinach dip, Teresa's cheeseball or pimento cheese suggestion. A bit heavier would be sweet potato biscuits with a sliver of honey/glazed ham, rye puffs filled with cream cheese and corned beef, like a Rueben, small dinner rolls or croissants with chicken, turkey, chicken salad, ham, thin slices of roast beef. Desserts could be Christmas cookies, of course, or fudge, some "bark", which is fast and easy, truffles or peanut butter balls, bundt cake, mini cupcakes, brownies, pecan pie bars. I think bars would be faster and more efficient than something like rolled out sugar cookies or frosted and decorated types, so you could have a good assortment with less time spent. Refrigerator type cookies are good too, the kind you make ahead of time and then freeze or refrigerator, then slice and bake fresh when they are needed. You could even serve a crockpot of some type of soup or chili, if you are adventurous, with cups and spoons instead of bowls, so people could eat standing up or walking about. Another thought, Kezia, would be to have a fortune teller also. My husband's employer had both at their company anniversary parties, which were big hits - lines waiting for them.

No games for an adult party.
I have been to parties with a fortune teller and a magician and a ventriloquist who strolled and who's puppet made small talk and an outside pool side party with a monkey who panhandled for snacks...that was a bit Icky!
But I vote for a magician...I can give you the name of a good one who specializes in corporate parties, he's located in Vegas but will travel...he's very good and very expensive!

I too agree on the 'game' during an adult party-with the exception of one quick one that has always create laughter in lg parties I've done. Simply, you have each table of seated people split in to 2 teams (the one, two manner), then have all of the 'ones' stand together in a circle on the dance floor. Ditto with the two team.
Direct them to remove their shoes & throw them into the center of their circle. Once done-you or the emcee-step into the circle & mixes them all up in a pile.
On the count of 3..everyone must scramble to find their shoes, put them on & the 1st team who completes the race...wins.
I also had a caricature artist on hand who worked for a minimal fee for those who wanted one done.
Something else I did was set up an area for a photographer to take pics of couples, or buddies at the party. It could be a well set, candle lit table for two-toasting w/champagne glasss-or something funny-like the 'boss's desk with a swivel chair and a side chair-posing the couple with the man sitting in the swivel chair, feet upon the desk & the gal taking a memo. A placard on the desk in big print says:"IT's MY TURN"! or something funny! Pics could be passed out later in the evening as souvineers.

Sharon_FL, Thanks for the ideas. You helped me get my juices flowing with your post. I like the photographer suggestion. I have folks that love to take pictures. That will be an easy one.
