Stomping my feet in anger; screeching; and

...saying things that would shock all the sailors I've ever known.

I cannot get anyone (stomp) to come do anything (slam) in this (sailor words) house for any (sailor words) amount of money.

We live forever away from the town of Grand Forks. I understand I have to pay, and pay, and pay, mileage for any repairman or contractor to come out. I know this; I expect this; I'm happy to pay their mileage. I would drive to town and carry them back to Larimore if it would be easier for them.

I fix lunch for my workers. I offer cold drinks and snacks. I don't "visit" or interfere with their work. I'm a nice person to work for.

I had one carpenter say they would build the simple little broom closet I need last January. Cash job, easey-peasey. They never came back.

Two weeks ago I called yet another home repair person. They supposedly specialize in handy-man jobs; they don't do whole-house building projects; they sounded like just what I need.

They were very interested in building the small closet I need. "Yes; they would show up as scheduled." "Yes; they want to do projects." They asked about the any other projects I wanted done. I told them there were several things, including a big-bucks four-seasons room remodel, we want done, if we found someone that was dependable, would show up roughly on time and would complete each job. Right now I need

1. Two large windows replaced in the living room.

2. Wide window seat with drawers under it and tall cabinets flanking the window behind it.

3. A built in cupboard for the bathroom with pull-out shelves to fill the odd 18" wide, 37" deep empty spot at the end of the tub.

4. Two holes were left in the mudroom drywall by the plumber; I want them repaired.

5. Three sets of bi-fold closet doors hung. I can do this myself, but it someone were here anyway I'd pay them to do this, too.

There are many other things, but if I can't trust someone to build a 4' wide closet, how can I trust them to re-do a kitchen, build a wall in the basement, or anything else?

Now I'm going to go take a deep breath and call the well-repair man that promised to be here three weeks ago.

Heck, I might even call the local plumber to tell him about a small leak on the main water line coming into the basement. Maybe he'll come out before it causes a real flood...or not.
