What Makes Your Heart Go Pitter Patter???
Comments (11)Stepping out the door and seeing hills and valleys and nature all around me has never lost its magic. It's one of the great joys of my life. When the garden seems to be as close to perfection as it ever could be, and to look around in wonder and disbelief that I could have had a part in creating something so sublime, that is a heart stopper. It may not happen very often, but there is always the memory of it to lead me forward to greater efforts (and of course I have pictures to remind me of those special moments). Bending down to inhale the scent of a rose that smells as wonderful as La France or Wild Edric does something to my heart at that moment and also in retrospect whenever the memory of that fragrance comes back to me. Comments (13)The day after this last Christmas I was home for the much anticipated kitchen demo and remodel YEA!. It was a blast to watch. Very rewarding to see those 27 year old cabinets come down. Wonderful to say good bye to 20 year old white tile floors. I especially looked forward to seeing the sink/trash can cabinet taken away. It was disgusting and had at one time been the winter home of some smart little mice who went next door to the dishwasher and grabbed as much pink insulation as they could manage for their snug little beds. As the demo team neared the sink cabinet I warned them that they might find remnants of tiny residents of long ago in the toe kick area under the cab. As they pulled the cabinet away, piece by piece, I could see evidence of "something" under the cab but it wasn't pink. It was dirt... lots and lots of dirt! We're on a concrete slab, dirt filled the cabinet from the slab right up to the bottom of the cabinet (4" high)!!! Not exactly what I expected to find. The contractors looked absolutely puzzle so I asked them if they'd seen this in their 20 years of kitchen work. Dust, dead bugs, pizza menus and the occasional rodent skeleton but never this much dirt! It took a shovel and two buckets to remove it all. And then came the bad part ... There was a 4" area of concrete eroded away around the hot and cold water pipes and one of the copper pipes was pinched. As we swept away the last bits of dirt away from the eroded areas, one contractor wonders out loud what that "thing" was snaking its way out of the concrete. All three of us squat down to get a closer look only to find a large Ficus root and bunches of hair-like roots making their way out of the area around both copper pipes. I just groaned, knowing full well the significance of such a find ... $$$ cha-ching $$$ Next month a demo crew is coming out to pull up our entire concrete patio so the gardener can cut back the roots of our 20 (yes, 20) backyard privacy Ficus trees. Our pricey kitchen remodel just got a bit pricier. :-( ... sigh And oh ... the we had the house treated for termites in November, right before the furnace gave out ... double sigh Jodi-...See MoreSinging his heart out...2 pics...
Comments (14)Great shots! The second one is a "keeper". I was raised in southern ILlinois and there are meadow larks there. I haven't seen meadow larks since coming to Wisconsin over 40 years ago, except during an occasional visit back to Illinois. I do miss them....See MoreBacksplash: an alternative to white subway, to make my heart sing!
Comments (8)Thanks for the ideas, everyone! Toronto Veterinarian, I will ask our local tile store about whether they can obtain Olympia Picadilly tile. I’m glad you pointed out the light-reflecting properties of the uneven surface - that’s a real-world effect I hadn’t anticipated. Our old kitchen had blue cabinets, faux butcher-block laminate countertops and two overhead lights. The color combo was pretty, but the room was dark except on the brightest summer days. To brighten it up, we opted for white cabinets and more layers of lighting in the new kitchen. Tile that reflects a little additional light would be a real plus. Caligirl5, our floor is red oak. A portion of it is visible in the photo of the fridge. I took the photos on a very cloudy day without turning on the lights in the kitchen, so it does look pretty shadowy. I would love to do color in the backsplash, but DH is against it. He’s concerned it will look like a stripe in our small kitchen, especially since everything else except the floor is white, black, or grey/stainless. I’m encouraged by photos on Houzz showing white backsplashes with the colors in our kitchen - most look harmonious and calming, not boring. If we can’t find a smaller version of the 5x12 tile, we’ll likely go with white. We’re intrigued by the uneven-surface tile like Toronto Veterinarian’s. We’d be open to some kind of patterned tile, if it wouldn’t look too busy and wouldn’t “fight” the look of the countertop. When we started our project, we said the backsplash would be “anything but white subway.” After bringing home many samples from many tile stores, it looks like that might be what “goes” best with the rest of the kitchen. So I thought I’d try seeking ideas here for alternatives! Fancyxx, we considered doing the backsplash in the same material as the countertop, but ruled it out due to the strong but scattered veining in it and the difficulty and expense of obtaining another slab like the one we got for the countertop. There was a minimum eight-week wait for slabs like ours, and they were pricey. We also thought that due to the pattern of the veining and the shortness of our backsplash it would be hard to get a relatively uniform look without cutting it into tiles, which would add even more to the cost. Our project included a master bath remodel (photos to come when it’s completely done), replacing the baby blue master bedroom carpeting with hardwood, and replacing our porch and front walk, furnace, and AC… and we’re not done yet. Even if we were not currently a bit cash-strapped, though, we would do the backsplash in a different material than the countertop because of the timing and pattern issues mentioned above....See Morearcy_gw
