Happy Canada Day today to all who are celebrating! Rain here today which will put a damper on BBQs and fireworks but forests and lawns are happy.

Courtesy of a granddaughter who is studying forestry - the maple leaf on the Canadian flag is that of a sugar maple, making it an ideal symbol. Our Manitoba maple, on the other hand, has leaves that don't resemble a "typical" maple leaf at all - who knew there was this variety? Edited for clarity.

Best wishes to all of you fellow Canadians on this our hundred and fifty second birthday. As I was sitting here doing some brain activity while feeding my body with lunch ... ... it occurred to me that my grandmother (Dad's side) was born in '62 - so she was five when our nation was born! I think grandpa a couple of years older ... and Mom, being a couple of years younger than Dad, her parents of similar vintage: likely all four under 10 in 1867. While it was an accident of birth that made us Canadian rather than a citizen/resident of some other country ... we are thankful for our good fortune. We are thankful for our freedom to build our lives as we feel appropriate, without the need to watch our mouth, our step and our choice of friends lest we make some dictator and his cohorts unhappy. Many of us have a measure of respect and affection for our fellow citizens and the communities we share and feel it important to nurture them and leave them better for our children. Also to work with the people of other nations to work toward a world community where we can build increasing respect and trust. Maybe the corona virus showing us that we are all in the same boat may help us to be more willing to work together. Let us, as we celebrate alone, be thankful for our good fortune and rededicate ourselves to building a country of which we can be thankfully proud, folks. Some of us feel that, in today's world, democracy is at risk and feel that we should work toward strengthening it ... and our freedom, as well. Good wishes for having a great year ahead, fellow Canadians. And similar good wishes for you, our valued neighbours to our south, as you celebrate your country and its people in a few days. ole joyfuelled

Love Canada! I've only been in Manitoba.....Winnipeg & Riding-Mountain Golf-Course (golfed there in the early 80's...). I don't have a Passport, but DW & DD do. They got one to see Heart & Elton-John a few years ago. I SHOULD get one!! I wanna go to a CFL Game....& maybe a Winnipeg Jets/MN Wild game up THERE!! DW & DD have been to Banff 3?? times. I've always had to stay home with the dog & work. It's sure a long-a$$ drive from Fargo they tell me! Some DAMN GOOD Rock groups from Canadia obviously! Heart, RUSH, BTO, Loverboy, etc. Saying that.....now I've gotta go crank my fave Canadian screamers, BTO's "Sledgehammer"....;-) "Take off ya Hoser....." ;-) Faron

Hoping all you other Canadians are having a fruitful and happy day.

My main celebration was hearing a special 2 hour celebration of Gordon Lightfoot's music led by many great entertainers who knew and loved that fine musician and composer in Massey Hall, Toronto, where he had played many times.

Many testified to his friendly, humble manner and how much they miss him.

It was broadcast on CBC television and radio and I am pretty sure can be available on their apps on demand at cbc.ca, their app for television being "gem" and for radio it's "listen".

I am somewhat troubled by the reduction in supplies of professional journalism: the press gallery in our national and provincial capitals used to be vigorous but has shrunk to a shadow of their former sizes as so many newspapers have shrunk or closed, many in small cities and towns, as millions of advertising dollars have migrated to silicon valley.

It seems to me that our democracy depends on widespread professionally provided news being available.

With so much informatiom available now, much claiming to be real news and true, if you please, that it's getting quite difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

We all need to work on keeping our precious freedom and democracy operating for all our citizens.

In a by-election in Toronto the other day ... 44 per cent of eligible voters felt it important enough to vote that they showed up.
