Sweet bread for hot cross or easter babka
Comments (2)Yes! I was hoping for someone to catch that as I left it out intentionally! In this case, I use about 2-3 teaspoons of yeast, as its usually a bit more than for regular white bread. I also like a bit more mace than I mentioned, like about 3/4 teaspoon. Candied fruits are variable, and there are only a few makers for them now. I find that there are a couple of sources on the internet for a decent glace (candied) fruit, which is mostly citron in a few colors like red, green and yellow. Also some decent raisins (usually white ones) are great in these doughs....See MoreHosta Z 2012
Comments (19)Paula, thanks for helping my LIKE list grow and everyone else for posting their pictures and answering my questions. Everyone's answers will help me in relocating some of my hostas for better growing conditions. I liked the repetition of the same cultivar (young and mature) by all the posters; that helped me become more familiar with plants I don't have. The alphabet thread also helped me identify areas of my hosta beds where I could add more hostas. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone's hostas are doing next year. As I've been googling hostas that interest me, I couldn't help but notice the number of alphabet threads that showed up from past years.. so thanks also to those folks for coming up with the original idea. Comments (26)No, no saving, I did try adding yeast at the end - no luck. I've been having the worst time in the kitchen lately, I must be too distracted lately or something. I made some more this morning and though "perfect" what wasn't perfect - my oven temp, I had it 25 degrees too hot. I thought I remembered the temp from last time I made them until I pulled them out the oven, one pan burned and the other just overcooked. Sigh....See MoreRECIPE: Looking for Hot Cross Buns - very light & yeasty
Comments (2)I've made these every year (usually 6-8 dozen) for the past 35 years or so- they are very light and yeasty. They are very popular with family and friends and the only kind DH will eat any more :-) Hot Cross Buns 450g/1 lb flour 2 sachets/3 tsp instant yeast 1 tsp caster/superfine sugar 300ml/10 fl oz milk 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp mixed spice/pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp salt 50g/2 oz (by weight) caster sugar 100g/4oz (by weight) currants 25g/1 oz (by weight) mixed peel 50g/2 oz/1/2 stick melted butter 1 beaten egg Mix yeast, 100g/4 oz flour and 1 tsp sugar in a bowl. Warm milk to blood heat, add to mixture and leave half an hour or until frothy. Sift remaining flour with salt, spices and sugar. Pour butter and egg into batter, mix well, then add spiced flour and fruit. Knead 10 minutes, leave to rise, punch down, knead lightly and divide into 12. Roll each piece into a bun and place close to each other on a greased sheet to rise. Make a flour and water paste and place a cross on each bun. Bake at 190C/375F 20-25 minutes. Glaze hot buns with 25g/1 oz sugar dissolved in 3 tablespoons water. Brush glaze on hot buns with a pastry brush....See Moreparty_music50
